Motion pictures of the lawn party given by Dr and Mrs John R Brinkley and Johnnie April 25 at their Palm Drive estate in Hudson Gardens will be shown at the Princess Theatre Friday and Saturday. The pictures will accompany the regular program.
Denton weather notes report scattered showers Thursday with Del Rio recording 0.6 inches at about 5 am marking the first rain since April 20. Other towns logged varying amounts from Sabinas to Alpine while H L Molyneux predicts fair weather for Friday.
Soaking rains covered most of Texas yesterday and today aiding crops and rangelands while increasing insect damage concerns. West Texas saw widespread rain except Amarillo and Lubbock with Sterling City receiving one inch and Water Valley, Palestine, Corsicana, San Antonio and Austin also reporting rain and related effects.
Del Rio to observe Poppy Day on May 29 with Memorial poppies worn to honor World War dead. Mrs J R Middlebrook leads Val Verde County American Legion Auxiliary in organizing poppy distribution and fundraising for welfare of disabled veterans and families. Poppies ordered from Legion Hospital near Kerrville. donations fund local veteran welfare.
Government officials and the press push to stress the memory of the king's father after the coronation. George VI would reportedly grow a beard to resemble his father as the Duke of Windsor seeks a public wedding and recognition of Wallis Simpson as Her Royal Highness, while cabinet members oppose the royal highness title.
May 13 report from London states PS OP Morgan, a financier, suffered a heart attack yesterday and could not attend the coronation of King George VI. Rome reports on May 15 that Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano warned of a grave danger from the anti Italian press campaign without naming England.
Cleveland on May 13 reports General Motors Fisher Body plant halted for today by a sit-down strike involving about 6000 workers. Strikers protested layoffs and the speed up of assembly lines.
Paris reports the French government will not permit radio coverage of the May wedding of the Duke of Windsor and Mrs Wallis Warfield Simpson held in France. A Foreign Office spokesman said an American system to broadcast the event using French facilities was refused on grounds of courtesy. The government aims to leave the couple to their privacy.
Governor Alfred named M J R Jackson of Amarillo chief justice of the Amarillo Court of Civil Appeals, succeeding the late R W Hall. He named District Judge A J Folley of Flovada as associate justice.
Ranchmen urged to attend a Friday discussion on insect control in the office of County Agent J B Kidd. Ex tension Service entomologist Special tims will cover control of ants and cockroaches. Source notes the talk is organized by R R Reppert and Mr Kidd.

London reports Anthony Hall, alias King Anthony L, a California born printer claiming descent from Ann Boleyn and Henry VIII. He declares he will sit on the throne in 1940, citing the coronation as a distraction and producing mock currency from his presses for future redemption.
In Austin on May 14 the Texas House debated a Senate bill allowing railroads to own truck lines pipe lines and aircraft and other transport forms. Representative W E Pope of Corpus Christi attacked the measure as inroads into state control. The House rejected a committee report on the bill and the Senate approved a drivers license examination requirement.
About 40 to 50 persons and 16 planes will land at Del Rio Municipal Airport late Thursday from Dallas. Jas C. Netts of the Chamber of Commerce reports the group will spend the night, then continue Friday to Farle Pass Laredo and Corpus Christ, with each member paying own expenses and local transport arranged. The tour was arranged by the Dallas Department of Commerce.
An equestrian statue of King George II was blown up in Dublin today. The blast smashed windows across buildings surrounding the park, but no injuries were reported.
President Roosevelt ends Texas visit and returns to Washington. Elliott near Ben brook hosted a relaxing two weeks at Elliott’s home with James and Geneva joining for a barbecue. The party then travels by train to the national capital for a weekend conference and official talks with aides and Reconstruction officials among others.
Captain A N Owen of the Harlem Prison Farm reported that a young Dallas County convict cut off his right foot with an ax. The blood stained tool was brought for fingerprinting. Owen said the prisoner claimed self-inflicted injury. officials vow immediate investigation.
Saturday May 15 is the final date to file for soil conservation program benefits. County Agent B Kidd urged ranchmen who have not yet submitted their applications to do so immediately as Sunday is the last day for acceptance this year.
The House appropriation committee overrode economy concerns and urged a $1.5 billion work relief appropriation for the coming fiscal year starting July 1. Administration leaders expect House approval when the measure is taken up next week.
May spread as 27000 workers at Jones and Laverlin Steel Corporation plants in Pittsburgh and Aliquippa walk out. Samuel Murray orders a walk-out after a two hour meeting with H F Lewis to press for a signed contract. Federal mediators work to avert wider spread while independents resist. General duty workers remain on site as talks continue.
A special session of District Court scheduled for Friday was postponed. Judge Montague is in Fort Worth with relatives involved in a July automobile wreck and will not be in Del Rio Friday. The civil case will be heard at a later convenient time with no definite date set.
Six thousand wine bottles are being cast into the sea off La Jolla in a study of ocean currents. Cards printed request finders report to Dr. HU Sverdrup of the Serine Institution of Oceanography for tracking.
A Del Rio Evening News page shows a Rome Telephoto image of King George VI’s coronation. The London picture arrived in New York by radio photo and was then airmailed to the Del Rio paper within 24 hours.
