Wal ter Marston of Boston acted for the buyer and C B Dutch Wardlaw of the Producers Wool and Mo hair Co announced the bid. The sale was the first long wool sale in Del Rio this Spring and likely the season's high price in Texas.
Pinehurst North Carolina May 13 Immediate payment of the soldier bonus in cash may settle the issue and take it out of politics, says Jesse H. Jones head of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in a speech to the North Carolina State Bankers Association. He argues the government can bear the relief and public works costs and that Congress may override a veto to settle the matter now. He notes the debt was assumed 10 years ago and paying it now would anticipate future payment. He believes settling the issue may be worth the extra cost. Jones mentions withdrawing from the lending field once natural agencies meet demands.
Princess Barbara Hutton Mdivani won an absolute divorce from Prince Alexis Mdivani in Reno on May 13 after a brief secret trial. The heiress cited extreme cruelty and then faced possible remarriage to Danish noble Count Kurt Haugwitz-Reventlow.
Members of the American Legion collected 480 signatures in the business district urging President Roosevelt to sign the bonus bill. The petition was sent by airmail Sunday morning and is to reach the White House Monday. The President is expected to sign the bill Tuesday.
Joe Tomasevich, weighted with 25 pounds of tools, plunges 150 feet from a bridge above New Orleans, beating Steve Brodie’s famed Brooklyn leap by 15 feet. He survives despite broken ribs, after being rescued from the river and treated in a New Orleans hospital.
Del Rio High School livestock teams placed fifth overall at the College Station contest with Billings Jr and Jack Hill earning silver and bronze medals in goat and overall individual scoring. Alvis Belcher contributed strong showings, while Richland Springs led the field in a record 1600 points.
Deer are a growing menace to orchards and lawns around Fort Davis. A small herd damaged a plum orchard owned by W. L. Veazey and many young trees in the C. H. Baird orchard. Rancher W. T. Jones reports herds of does and fawns drinking from his horse trough all spring.
The Supreme Court revises its Scottsboro era ruling by voiding the death sentence of Jess Hollins, an Oklahoma Black defendant convicted of criminal assault on a white woman, holding juries cannot be denied Black jurors.
In Crockett on May 13, Sam Grant, one of two remaining escapees from the Eastham prison farm group, was killed in a firefight with a posse while trying to cross the Trinity River seven miles southwest of the farm.
The Senate Interstate Commerce Committee reported favorably the revised bill to abolish and regulate public utility holding companies amid protest as two members left in high dudgeon. The measure would empower a securities commission to study investment trusts and companies to assess their influence over firms whose securities they hold.
Grisoforo Galindo faces a perjury trial at a special term of the District Court. Indicted April 24, 1935, for perjury linked to a murder case continuance, witnesses were summoned and fined for nonappearance. judge Montague and clerk Dixie Dunn testified on proceedings and dates. Jurors named include John Rowland and Julius Pranks among others.
Texas Highway Commission will request the Federal government raise the Public Works allotment to 100 million dollars to complete vital state highways, announced by commission chairman Harry Hines.
Geneva May 13 A new Ethiopian note to the League of Nations made public today declares Italian concentration of troops and war materiel in East Africa leaves no doubt as to Italy's hostile intentions Ethiopia calls the Italian report of general mobilization absolutely false and urges League action to settle the dispute.
Funeral services for Mrs. George Kent about 85 mother of Thomas Kent of this city were held in Chapman Kansas after a three month illness. Her husband died in Kansas in December and she is survived by two daughters and a Del Rio son who could not attend.
About 750 delegates and guests are expected to attend the 38th annual Texas Association of Insurance Agents convention in Galveston on May 16 and 17. State and national experts will be present, with Eugene Battles of Los Angeles delivering a principal address on May 11.
Thomas Holmes, 19, died at a Fort Worth hospital from gunshot wounds after two bandits robbed a Hill City store in Hood County last night. He attempted to disarm one robber and was shot. The robbers fled with $20.
North China May 13. An expedition led by Prof Nicholas Roerich and backed by the US Department of Agriculture sails from Kalagam toward Mongolia to seek drought resistant grasses and forage plants for arid American lands. Dr George Roerich accompanies as second in command to study Mongol medicinal herbs and herbs used in cancer treatment. The team plans a six month field study returning to the United States with plant data and specimens gathered in the Gobi and Northwestern Manchuria.
Warsaw reporters say national mourning was proclaimed for Marshal Joseph Pilsudski, Poland’s dictator, whose death heightens diplomats’ concerns about regional peace. The succession will influence Poland’s future alliance choices between France and Russia or a German rapprochment path.
Governor Allred appoints Irvin McCready of Gatesville as banking commissioner succeeding F. E. Brand. He also signs measures authorizing seizure of illegally produced crude oil and products and raising the crude oil tax from one eighth to three sixteenths of a cent per barrel for the railroad commission oil and gas division.
Senator Morris Sheppard announced he will vote to override the Roosevelt veto of the bonus bill and said he will continue to support the measure. He stated he will do everything he can in its behalf.
Dickens County receives allocation of thousands of acres for a soil erosion campaign. Grady J. Lane the county agent has been advised. Much of the wind damaged land lies on the East plains near McAdoo in the county's wheat belt.
E. B. Wootton 36 of Del Rio an office clerk for Pat Kerby receiver for the First National Bank of Del Rio and Rocksprings was stabbed in Bruni Saturday night. He was reported slightly improved Monday morning but in grave condition from a knife wound near the heart. He had traveled from Del Rio to Bruni on private business and was attacked in a butcher shop after a discussion with the proprietor. Mrs. Wootton and their daughter Helen rushed from Corpus Christi to Bruni after the injury.
Dallas councilman Emil Corenbleth backed a South Dallas resident’s bid for relief from a proposed large billboard next to his apartment. The plan would block ventilation and light, prompting calls to protect property values. City Manager Hal Mosemey was instructed to study the issue and report back.
Dallas mayor George Sergeant warned city workers who bet on horse races will lose their jobs. He said he would bring the issue to the council after reports that many City Hall employees patronize bookies and tracks, prompting immediate action to end the practice.
