Funeral services were held in Austin for Dr Harry Yandell Benedict 67 longtime president of the University of Texas who died yesterday of a heart attack near the campus. He led UT from 1927 and oversaw a $1,000,000 research endowment for astronomy projects. He was born in Louisville Kentucky and had a long career in mathematics and astronomy. His wife Ada Stone Benedict survives with a son Vandel Jr. and other relatives.
Mrs J A Forman was chosen general chairman of the Val Verde County health committee at a Tuesday morning meeting in the District Court room. Other officers named include Mrs Henry Seale as vice chairman and Gilbert Cerda recording secretary with Mrs E A Stricklen as educational director. The session featured reports from Dr HB Ross county health officer and remarks by Dr D A York city health officer praising cooperation and calling for continued public support.

W F Jourdan county superintendent of public instruction is appointed county chairman for the Citizens Military Training Camp for Val Verde County. He received the appointment Tuesday from Ralph H Durkee civil aide to the Secretary of War for Texas. Jourdan says at least four but possibly more Val Verde youths will attend a 30 day C M T C session with all expenses paid at Camp Bulls near San Antonio. Candidates must be 17 to 24 and are urged to confer with Jourdan in the county courthouse.
Washington May 11 A. Two factors push congressional leaders to predict a relief spending cut this week. The House appropriations subcommittee may act on Roosevelt's request for 1.5009 billion for relief in the new fiscal year. A general conference Friday is planned as the President returns from a fishing trip.
R H Hurd and Jas C Netts were re nominated directors of the South Texas Chamber of Commerce in a regular session Tuesday. Pattie Jo Hamilton said August 29 will likely be Del Rio Day at the Fort Worth Frontier Celebration and urged attendees to plan to be in Fort Worth that date for a special program.
Hollywood police assigned 250 extra workers to protect studios as strike tensions rose after disturbances yesterday. Berlin reports US Ambassador Dodd said he was told a billionaire would back and control an American dictatorship and urged Democratic leaders not to let the party fracture, without naming the donor.
The West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention highlighted soil conservation with leaders from Wichita Falls Abilene and Fort Worth's Louis Pimera stressing topsoil as permanent wealth. Van Zandt Jarvis praised the soil and water program as the year's key achievement.
Six Texans died by violence yesterday raising the three day toll to fourteen. Two were killed by lightning Mrs Addie Donahue of Brookland and R R Buckmaster of Dalhart. One, Mrs JF Rhodes of Dallas, drowned. Traffic deaths included J F Johnson Grand Praine Henry Heath Seymour and Mrs Henrietta Fielding Cleburne. Seven died in weekend automobile accidents.
President Roosevelt ended his fishing trip and reached Galveston at 9 10 this morning. Governor James V Allred led a reception committee and greeted him. He rode in an open car to a special train bound for Houston College Station and Fort Worth with plans to arrive in Washington Friday morning.
The government recruits beavers for flood control, urging farmers to trap and transplant them rather than kill. Beavers build dams that create natural reservoirs to hold flood waters, improving streams and bottom lands. The program notes many states have beaver populations, with profits from pelts in some areas and beavers advised to be taken uninjured from July to October.
Funeral services for Dr H Y Benedict president of the University of Texas who died of a heart attack yesterday will be held in the university chapel with faculty and officials in attendance.
Mrs O L Sweet mother of Mrs Brian Montague of Del Rio suffered head injury a fracture and numerous lacerations in a head on collision on the Port Worth pike west of Ledbetter. Mrs Montague and other relatives were injured in the same crash. Several passengers suffered serious injuries and one woman was blinded in the incident. Authorities list seven hurt in the accident.
W A Richards Jr a road foreman for Precinct No One of Val Verde County submitted his resignation to the Commissioners Court at the regular meeting. He steps down to pursue a position with the soil conservation program. No replacement decision yet. court to handle routine matters and equalization board items in sessions to continue into Tuesday and Wednesday.
