Worth Evans 33 Fort Davis ranchman was shot accidentally in the head by a Mexican employee's gun during an eagle hunting trip on their sheep ranch. He was recovering at Hotel Dieu in El Paso from infection linked to the wound. Evans is the son of Mr and Mrs Jesse T Evans of Rocksprings.
A. E. Steinmetz, Val Verde County sheriff, helped lead a protest against L. G. Phares becoming director of the Department of Public Safety. The Texas Sheriffs' Association and officials from Brady and Beeville opposed the appointment, citing lack of enforcement experience and policy concerns. The association planned further action before Phares announced his resignation.
At a San Antonio plant a crowd of women strikers broke through police lines and attacked a woman worker entering the plant, beating and scratching her before officers restored order. Police kept other workers away as about forty women and nine men had struck the previous week for higher pay and shorter hours.
Administration leaders won time for treasury experts to defend a $2,364,229,712 deficiency bill carrying a $1,245,000,000 work relief appropriation for 1937. The measure passed the House 304 to 37 after defeating a Republican move to substitute state grants for the Works Progress program.
The 47th Rotary district annual meeting opened in Kerrville with 500 delegates from 58 South and Southwest Texas towns registering. Four Del Ricans Paul Poag John Loomis W S Stevenson and W C Ford were among the Kerrville delegation. A new district governor to succeed Edwin P Arneston of San Antonio was to be chosen Monday afternoon. Louis Ball of Huntsville was the sole announced candidate with speakers including Charles L Wheeler San Francisco Manuel Leon Ortega Mexico City and Kerrville Mayor Richard Holdsworth. James P DeWolfe of Houston was slated as banquet speaker Monday night.
Speaker Byrns told reporters that the Frazier Lemke farm debt refinancing bill has no more chance of passing. He noted the House might consider a rule to take the measure from the committee but that adopting the rule would be difficult.
The Victor Gonzalez murder case opened in District Court Thursday ended in a mistrial Sunday at 3 15 after jurors reported a deadlock. Gonzalez faced charges in the death of Hipolito Flores from gunshot wounds on April 12 at Plaza Brown. A July term will hear the case again.
Amarillo May 11 A select ive sales tax to fund old age pension obligations and to bolster school and general funds was approved today by the West Texas Chamber of Commerce work committee. Miss Marjorie Searcy Del Rio’s duchess was slated to appear in the West Texas Cavalcade pageant. Reuben Holmes from Del Rio will compete in the My Home Town oratorical contest. E K Fawcett Del Rio director Mrs Fawcett and Tommy Hayes attended the convention.
Funeral services for Celia McCullough known as Aunt Celie aged 62 were held Monday afternoon at Mount Olive Baptist Church Fairview. She was a longtime community figure among both white and colored residents and helped at many births before hospitals existed. Interment followed in Westlawn Cemetery colored section. Survived by husband Eugene McCullough.
Mary McCracken and Jean Stevenson defeated two youths in a log rolling contest on the mill race in Eugene Oregon. McCracken cited her Legislature uncle and Stevenson noted her saw mill father as context.
Dr. F. E. Townsend and CARP chief counsel Thomas W. Hardwick were summoned to Washington for questioning but the House Committee investigation was postponed for two weeks. Townsend then announced moving his July convention site from Kansas City to Cleveland.
Retired ranchman and judge C. K. McDowell recalls a half century on the Southwest frontier. Born 1870 in Sulphur Springs Texas, he served as Border Patrol inspector, Val Verde county attorney, and county judge. He rode the Matador outfit to Montana, ranched near Del Rio, and remembers early Texas cattle life and law enforcement with characteristic humor.
No word today from Thomas Parker Jr George Herrington and James Etheridge who left Cook's Perry to float the Trinity River to the mouth. Heavy rains swelled the Trinity and Neches with flood levels rising toward a 40 foot crest within 36 hours. Local relatives near Longlake Palestine await news.
In Detroit on May 11 Walter Fisher a 33 year old minor executive of the Merchants Fruit Dispatch built a furnace fire then jumped in to kill himself Detective Earl Switzer reported. The body was found by a roomer at the Fisher home with only the head and shoulders inside the furnace and the fire still raging footprints showed Fisher stood back then ran into the blaze.
Rome reports the war department demobilizes large portions of the 1911 and 1913 classes now in home barracks. The move, seen as indicating the Ethiopian campaign ends, follows Mussolini's assurances no new European complications will follow annexation. Men will return in groups of 500 to 1,000. Baron Aloisi walked out of the League session over Ethiopia. Haile Selassie protested the annexation and Italy threatened to bolt the League.
Houston police warned youths after four-car youths fired at a root beer stand from a moving car. Motorcycle officers Sammons and Kent chased the vehicle for six blocks in the Berry Street area. A small pistol and blank cartridges were found. one youth charged with carrying a pistol.
