A health survey by Miss Nickerson finds widespread ailments among two to six year olds in Val Verde County. The committee seeks a special county health fund and may seek a separate health board while commissioners consider courthouse remodel bids and routine business.
Funeral services were held for Elsie Dodson five year old daughter of Mrs F E Dodson who died Saturday afternoon at 4 in the home of Rev James P F Black. Burial followed at Westlawn Cemetery. Survivors include her mother three sisters Lena Billings Bertha and Ernestine Dodson and three brothers Valentine Norris.
A car struck a train near Main Street causing six deaths. Victims include Charles Collins 38 his wife Charlene 34 and two daughters Pierine 16 and Callina 8. Cecil Perquam brother of Charles Collins owned the filling station. Bodies sent to local mortuary for a group funeral service Tuesday.
In Austin on May 11 a state representative urged increasing the Ranger force to deter racketeers. The lawmaker warned Chicago and other cities plan to move criminal activity to Texas, calling for stronger state law enforcement to warn off incursions.
In April 1931 Del Rio postal receipts rose about $184 from April 1930, signaling a gradual return to normalcy. Officials announced the figures noting postal receipts as a national financial barometer with April 1939 receipts totaling 62,016 and 1931 receipts for the past month at 3,100.
Hugo Eickiman, 46, questioned after the shooting of Mrs. Melvin Tampke, 23, wife of a local wrestler, was found dead in a garage. A note said he had nothing to do with the shooting. officers report he hanged himself. Mrs Tampke was shot in the stomach. physicians say she may recover.
West Texas ranchmen plan a campaign against the bitterweed menace after a meeting in Ozona. A. B. Clawson and Roy Aldwell described severe sheep losses and rising costs from the weed, with tours to inspect ranches and a statewide effort to raise funds.
Alfred Adler reports the Crystal City grand jury is to decide on charges against Crawford Treese a 43 year old farmer from La Pryor for criminal assault on his 11 year old daughter Alice. Treese was arrested and jailed in Crystal City after the alleged abuse spanning years. Local authorities note threats to his wife and other children if the case is publicized. Alice testified Treese attacked her when she was eight. The public reaction in Crystal City is reported as high.
Mrs W T Capers wife of Bishop WT Capers of the West Texas diocese died at the family home in San Antonio after a year of ill health. She is survived by Bishop Capers and three sons including a rector in San Antonio and a Canadian ranchman. The Diocese Council meeting faces indefinite postponement due to her death.
Blue Mountain College plans a spring coronation with Miss Sybil Brame and her court wearing cotton gowns to promote the material.
The National Wool Marketing Corporation battles cut throat competition and pressure for cheaper wool. Rival buyers claim lower margins and note mills can source wool cheaper elsewhere. Co operative officials warn that market sensitivity could spark below value sales and hurt marketing efforts while the National resists price cuts.
In Harlan Kentucky tensions rose as national guardsmen restored order after deadly disputes at Evarts area mines. A union leader and three Evarts officials faced capital charges while rumors spread of a mine guard and miner killing each other at Chields.

The plan seeks to avoid burdening producers while managing over advances across associations.
Appointment of John Rowland E K Adams and M D McNutt as the board of equalization for school taxes in the Del Rio Independent School District was announced by Sam H Walk. They will meet to set schedules and review tax renditions. The Del Rio school tax remains at $1 per hundred this year.
PT Logan mayor elect was shot twice by a mysterious gunman as he lay sick in bed in Port Arthur Texas. Mrs Logan and three neighbors were nearby when shots shattered the window. Col W L Black, about 87, died Sunday night in Menard, a Fort McKavett ranchman and NYSE charter member. Funeral services set for Tuesday in Fort McKavett. He wrote on wool and mohair on wool exchanges while in Del Rio. Survived by several children.
In Galveston on May 11 W S Scrivnor was sentenced to 10 years in the state penitentiary for the 1927 Texas City Bank robbery. The jury deliberated 42 hours. Defense attorney L M Kenyon filed a motion for a new trial. This marks his third conviction for the same charge after an earlier 98 year sentence was reversed and a second trial ended in a hung jury.
Del Rio Chamber of Commerce holds its regular monthly meeting Monday night announced by Claude Easterling secretary and manager. The session has been called for o clock.
Willie Burleson known as the other man in the Bessie Sharp case is set for a Tuesday preliminary hearing before Justice Henry Gates in Sanderson. He is charged as an accomplice to murder in Telefus Sharp’s poisoning, a crime tied to Bessie Sharp’s five page confession revealing plans to marry Burleson through her husband’s death.
The report notes colder conditions tonight with a high of 77 and a low of 62 yesterday, and a minimum this morning of 63. West Texas remains cooler in the extreme southeast portion tonight with Tuesday forecast to be fair.
