Maury Maverick won the San Antonio mayoral race with 42,609 votes, leading incumbent C K Quin by 4,125. Fusion candidates for several city posts trailed, while Paul Steffier narrowly led the street commissioner contest. Maverick urged unity and promised to appoint good officers as vote tallies continued to arrive.
Final arrangements for the Band Sponsors chuck wagon supper and carnival at Moore Park Thursday afternoon and evening are completed. The event starts at 4 30 p m with supper bingo games wheel of fortune and swimming to raise funds to pay band uniforms. A parade by the band is scheduled for noon Thursday and tickets are available from band sponsors or any band member.
Mrs Willie B Whitehead president of the Texas Sheep v Goat Raisers Association Womens Auxiliary announced a called meeting of the newly formed advisory board in San Angelo on May 23.
Del Rio and vicinity expect fair skies tonight and Thursday. Yesterday's high reached 92 degrees with a low of 64, and this morning's minimum was 70 degrees.
Maury Maverick former congressman defeated incumbent C K Quin in San Antonio mayoral race on Tuesday. He secured 42609 votes to Quin’s 36384, with Leroy Jeffers finishing third. Maverick declared victory and pledged to unite the city and work for all residents.
Moscow reports Tass says British counter proposals to the Soviet call for a Franco British Russian alliance neglect reciprocal aid to the USSR. Tass accuses Britain of demanding Soviet support while offering no reciprocal assistance if the Soviet Union enters military operations in Eastern Europe.
Fifty Uvalde businessmen are due in Del Rio this afternoon for a goodwill tour. Jas C Netts, manager of the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce, received a message from Jon W Watson of Uvalde outlining the visit and inviting old friends to meet the delegation. Watson notes a friendly greeting and mentions a rodeo and a firefighters celebration in Uvalde on May 19 20 and 21.
An unmasked robber held up the First State Bank near Maypearl Texas just after noon today and escaped with $1 200 after shooting bank president W D Wiseman in the back The assailant fled toward Grandview.
The 1057 ton British freighter Lindenbank sank in the Sulu Sea after striking a reef off Arena Island while en route from Australia to Shanghai. All hands were rescued by the US destroyers Globe and Pope after abandoning ship in lifeboats. The ship’s crew typically included about sixty with officers aboard and Lascars or Chinese crew. None were missing or injured.
The American Legion Auxiliary met Tuesday in the Woman's Club to observe Health Week with a talk on health by Mrs H A Robertson and a Music Week program by the Beadle Ensemble led by Warren Long Gail Walker Mary Grace Gaines and Mrs H J Beadle Marion Russell accompanied piano. A district convention was announced for Brady June 10 to 11 and plans for the City Federation of Women's Clubs program were outlined.
Del Rio ranchman Earl Sellers won the contract to supply rodeo stock for the Rocksprings Rodeo and Race Meet on June 15 16 and 17. He will manage the arena and serve as judge with Tom Taylor Spofford and W P Rudasill Rocksprings. Edwards County Fair Association President F A Moody sponsors the three day celebration.
Dallas musician Lucille Walker composer of the march Texas will ride ahead of about 200 Texans marching on Fifth Avenue in New York May 22. The Texas Cowboy Band of Hardin-Simmons University will play the piece as the Texas delegation led by Gov W Lee O Daniel sails from Dallas May 14 to promote Texas in a national train tour. Train reservations are filling quickly, said Lowry Martin of Corsicana.
Mrs J M Corley regional director of the Texas Fine Arts Association held a one artist exhibit in the new Masonic Hall Sanderson featuring 25 paintings including landscapes still life figures and portraits with a never before shown Fort Davis scene. She also lectured on art after returning from the Texas Fine Arts Association meeting where she was named regional director for Region Fifteen covering Del Rio Val Verde Terrell Maverick Edwards Kinney Dimmit Zavala Uvalde and Real counties. Her outreach began in Terrell County with plans to expand to all counties in the district and follows past exhibitions in Del Rio and leadership roles in the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Vern Curry of Del Rio is listed on Schreiner Institute Kerrville honor roll for the second six weeks of the second semester. A Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce delegation visiting Del Rio as part of the Salt for Wool trade extension will arrive at 4 p.m. Thursday and stay about thirty minutes before continuing to Eagle Pass. They will then visit multiple towns including Kerrville Junction Menard Eden San Angelo and others on a return route to Corpus Christi by Friday evening.
The South's compromise plan for freight rate changes gained Senate approval in the Interstate Commerce Committee as part of the Truman administration transportation bill. Senator Hull said the proposal, introduced by Ramspeck, calls for ICC investigation of current rates to remove discriminations and bars carriers from charging unduly favorable or unfavorable rates to any region, company, or commodity.
Dr. Richard H. Hutchins described dictators as deviated personalities driving nations toward warlike aims and the tom tom beating savage era. He urged mental hygiene in public affairs, crime prevention, and humane care for mental illness to reduce national conflict and improve governance.
J. S. Bridwell of Wichita Falls chairs the twenty-first annual West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention work committee in Abilene from May 15 to 17. The 25 member panel includes business and agriculture leaders from across West Texas. They will study vital regional problems and forward recommendations to the directors for action at the convention.
Juan Barragan of San Felipe faces a criminal assault charge filed Tuesday with an examining set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. before Justice of the Peace J P Aderhold. Bond terms not specified. The prior case involved Fraterio Gonzales with a $1500 bond and awaiting posting in Val Verde County jail.
William Blackmon was elected secretary of the Del Rio Junior Chamber of Commerce to fill the vacancy from R. M. Holmes. The group also authorized writing to Congressman Chas L South about a rumored government air field in Del Rio linked to a coastal defense plan and asked for his guidance.
A bandit robbed the Santa Anna National Bank of 1.54 dollars shortly after noon today near Santa Anna between Coleman and Brownwood. State police were notified. A separate Texas House vote failed a revenue tax amendment with 84 ayes and 59 nays, needing 100 votes, despite Gov. W. Lee O'Daniel urging passage for social security funding.
Thomas FE Rancier 38 a filling station operator in Del Rio was found shot at his Del Rio Court home Tuesday around 5 30 pm. An inquest was held and death attributed to a gunshot from a .270 rifle with an estimated death time of 7 30 am. Funeral set for 5 pm Wednesday at Doran Chapel with Rev Eugene Smith officiating. Interment in Westlawn Cemetery. Survived by a sister Mrs Dunn and a brother Frank Rancier plus multiple aunts and uncles.
Dr Allison of Chicago spoke on the utility industry during a Tuesday evening banquet and company meeting of the Central Power and Light Company in Uvalde at the Kincaid Hotel. About 125 attended, eight Del Rio residents among them. H W Cooper of Corpus Christi addressed the gathering.
J L Gulley & Sons of Uvalde sold eight registered Rambouillet rams at $40 each to L. Jones of San Antonio. They also sold Phil Newell 300 two year old ewes at $550 each. Ewes were purchased by the Gulleys from Jones.
The Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association announces 160 new grower members added this year to reach 460 total. Secretary G W Cunningham reports the increase includes members joining since January.
