Lieutenant Governor Walter F. Woodul criticizes the 4000 dollar Texas governor salary calling it disgraceful and backs a proposed amendment to raise it to 12000. He notes the governor bears heavy duties and cites Allred's 1935 deficit while outlining salary boosts for other top state offices.
Nationally known evangelist and reformer Bob Shuler, en route from California to Annapolis, will address the First Methodist Church in Del Ricans Wednesday at 8 p.m. He is pastor of Trinity Methodist Church Los Angeles and has stirred national attention with social reform sermons over his radio program.
Rains from San Antonio to the Oklahoma border soaked a wide strip of Texas with amounts from 1.30 to 2.10 inches in several cities. At the Capitol a 1936 meeting brought together keynoters Senator Alben W. Barkley and Senator Frederick C. Steiner with Barkley giving tips on what every keynoter should know. Barkley previously spoke at the Democrats’ 1932 Chicago convention.

Eastbound arrivals are 6:45 a.m. 12:45 p.m. and 7:40 p.m. Westbound from El Paso and points west arrive 10:30 a.m. and 10:15 p.m. Eagle Pass deliveries are 10:30 a.m. and 7:40 p.m. Carta Valley mails depart Tuesdays Thursdays Saturdays at 4 p.m. Outbound closes include 10 a.m., 3:40 p.m. and 9 p.m. for Fastbound and 7:10 p.m. westbound (El Paso area) and 6:30 a.m. 10 a.m. 9 p.m. for Eagle Pass and Carta Valley on Mon, Wed, Fri. Times are closing times, not mail time.
Five Del Ricans are expected to attend the annual conference of the Tih Rotary District in Kerrville on Sunday Monday and Tuesday. Delegates include J Autrey Walker W S Stevenson Paul J Poag W C Ford and Joe Caleyo. Kerrville prepares for six hundred visitors with a special Kerrville Times edition for Rotarians.
In Chicago markets on May 8, May wheat futures dropped three to five cents a bushel as rain hindered harvest prospects. In Taiyuanfu China reports claim Nationalist air units killed 1,000 Chinese Communists after a bombing raid, with Communist forces retreating from Shansi province.
Delegates representing Southwest Texas Odd Fellows Association arrive in Del Rio for a two day convention. The first session opened Friday at 3 pm in the I O F Hall. The association includes 26 lodges spanning from San Antonio to Ozona and from the Mexican border to Kerrville. Rev G Robert Forrester expects a large attendance from many lodges as the semi annual convention continues Friday and Saturday.
London reports the British government ordered transport planes with troops to Palestine to prevent further Arab Jewish violence. From Jerusalem, emergency measures followed a call by 150 Arab leaders for civil disobedience, with barbed wire around Jaffa and traffic halted between Jaffa and Tel Aviv.
A foot of heavy wet snow covered Trinidad and nearby areas after a spring blizzard. Communications lines were down, the South highway blocked, and schools closed as temperatures hovered near freezing.
Rep. Stanford Payne, known as Kingfish, returns Friday from Austin where he spent several days on business. He is a candidate for re election from the 87th legislative district and, so far, faces no opposition.
Clyde Sellers sold 18 000 pounds of 12 month paint free lamb wool at 32 cents a pound, a new high for the Southwest since 1928. Tom Richey bought the Sellers clip for A W Hilliard and Son, keeping buyers and growers near terms as the market rose. The Cody Wardlaw sale at 32 cents previously held the year’s high, while Roger Gills’ 100 000 pound sale reached 20 cents in 1935.
The Portland Hide & Wool Company confirmed the purchase of the Eddyville mohair pool of about 25 000 pounds. It was the last large unsold lot in Western Oregon and effectively closes the season in the Willamette Valley where about 40 cents a pound was the going price for average hair. Some wool moved in Western Oregon Eastern Oregon and Idaho.
In District Court Friday Dr. Manuel Urrutia testified as the murder trial of Victor Gonzalez continued. The case involves the shooting death of Hipolito Flores on April 12, with two witnesses already seen in Thursday sessions. A 12-member jury list includes Howard Nixon and John Rowland among others.
In Los Angeles on May 8 Sister Aimee Semple McPherson filed a deposition in a $400000 slander suit by Vian Denton former publicist of Angelus Temple. Miss Denton wept as she left the attorney's office and was accompanied by her attorney Jacob Moidel and her daughter Roberta Semple.
