Washington May 8 government weather report says the week was unfavorable for cotton. East of the Mississippi frequent rains wet soil and low night temperatures hindered planting and early growth while southern areas improved. Woman Charged With Car Theft Near Comstock

Officer Tilley of the customs service arrested Wilma Gancy of Rock Springs yesterday evening for possessing a stolen automobile. She was found on the road outside Comstock. The car was reported missing from Rock Springs. Sheriff FE S Young of Edwards County identified the vehicle and returned Gancy to Rock Springs to face theft charges.

Drisdale Car Rolls After Accident Near Comstock

Mr and Mrs Lee Drisdale were in a new Franklin when their car rolled two or three times on a slope near Comstock while en route to the ranch. Both were injured but not seriously, the top crushed though other damage limited. Drisdale was reportedly seen later, though verification was unclear.

The Hopkins residence on the Vance Jackson road burned early Tuesday night. damage was about 30000 dollars. City firemen saved nearby outbuildings and a windmill tank but could not save all water. Mexican Killed Near Comstock By Truck

An accident near Comstock Tuesday afternoon killed Lupe Diaz, a Mexican, as a Beadle O Bryan truck hit him while the driver, a boy, honked to warn but did not slow. An examining trial is set for tomorrow to establish the facts.

Former Citizen Charles E. Franks Buried in Del Rio

Charles E. Franks, well known in Del Rio, died at his brother Fred Franks home in Junction yesterday. His body arrived by land to Del Rio this afternoon and funeral services were held at Doran chapel at 4 30. Burial took place at West Lawn cemetery with Rev. James Black officiating. Franks spent most of his life in Val Verde county and had recently lived in Kimble County where he passed away after a long illness. He was mourned by many friends who regarded him as a good man.

Home Burned Tuesday Night in Chihuahua

Fire destroyed the frame home of Francisco Cardenas in Chihuahua at a late hour. Despite a rapid response the blaze spread due to lateness in reporting and high winds. Neighbors fought to stop it from reaching adjacent houses as crews worked to contain the fire. The residence was large and old, with an uncertain total loss.

Hunters Show Hounds at Big Texas Hunt Meet

The Texas Fox and Hunters Association held its annual spring hunting meet in Archer City May 8. Event runs through Thursday with Silver roving cups for field trial and bench show winners. President Carl L. Dupuy of Lufkin presents a special challenge cup to the field trial winner. Roy Hudgins of Archer City organized arrangements with Fred Forman of Throckmorton as Master of Hounds. Experienced riders named as field judges to ensure no dog is overlooked. The hunt was delayed to avoid high winds.

Frank Cook reported the 40 foot flag pole was dug up from his lawn and carted away while he was at work. In another item from Sheville North Carolina justice Ze bulon Shipman advertised for business in local papers, saying he has no political bosses to throw work his way and would appreciate business by the people.

Soucek Reaches 40 000 Feet In World Record Flight

Lieut Apollo Soucek of Anacostia air station soared to 40000 feet in just over an hour setting a likely new world altitude record. He landed at 12 23 pm and reached near the edge of space after a 9 minute climb. The temperature was minus 60 degrees. He declined food but asked for a cigarette and then underwent a physical exam. The record paragraph was sent to the bureau of standards for calibration.
