In Austin on May 6 the Senate debated a motion to override Governor Allred's veto of a bill exempting merchant-owned trucks from contract earner classifications. The House already voted to override. The Legislature sent a Padre Island state park conversion bill to the governor and concurred Senate amendments. Governor Allred signed a bill for equal representation of women on the state Democratic executive committee. A bill to end conflict over a new state pardon board became law when filed without a signature. The House also ordered an investigation into alleged barbaric treatment of inmates by staff of certain eleemosynary institutions.
Brackettville reports a brisk building pace as Brackettville residents buy about half of 22 frame houses offered at Cline Mine No Five auction. Homes are moved to Brackettville. Emil Schaeffer builds a new six room frame house.
The National Wool Growers Association and other livestock groups ask Congress to impose excise taxes on imported meat from Europe. They cite 1936 import volumes and urge duties of three cents per pound on fresh and cured pork, six cents on canned pork, and three cents on canned beef to protect U S growers.
May 6 report from Crockett states Bee Rains of Palestine and an Oklahoma man nicknamed Red Banks fired their way out of the Houston County jail. They wounded Jailer Bill Parker as he approached a cell and stole his keys, then fled in Parker's car. Parker was struck in the face but expected to recover.

The sender’s relative, W W Jourdin, a power plant engineer, is noted for Stanford honors and World Power Conference delegations.
Funeral services for Mrs Lura J Hodge 460 wife of Assistant Postmaster W C Hodge were held Thursday at the First Methodist Church with interment in Masonic Cemetery. She died Wednesday morning after a stroke. Surviving are her husband five children four grandchildren a brother and a sister.
Rotary Club speakers featured Guillermo L. Robinson Mexican consul in Del Rio who discussed Puebla Battle importance and Cinco de Mayo. Joe Calevo led the program while Annie Jones sang Un Viajo Amor and La Barquita with piano by Mrs. Earl Miller. Visiting Rotarians included Steinman Crystal City Hucon Uvalde Richardson Hebbronville and Robinson Del Rio.
Admiral William D. Leahy, chief of naval operations, asked the Senate naval affairs committee to approve six new auxiliary vessels at an estimated cost of 48 million dollars. He also urged modernization of the aircraft carriers Saratoga and Lexington at about 6.7 million dollars each.
