The Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that motor vehicles must be registered in the owner's home county. DPS officials said they would stop the practice seen as a growing menace costing the state construction and maintenance revenues. The ruling came on appeal by W. L. Oop who was fined in Bexar County for registering a truck in La Salle County.
Mrs. J. Hymans donated two 10 volume sets to the Del Rio High School library. Supt. R. M. Bankhead announced the gift on the 53rd anniversary of her residence in Del Rio. One set is Messages and Papers of the Presidents. the other History of the Great War.
Fred Hunter, associate of Alvin Karpis captured in a raid last Friday, was arraigned and held on $200,000 bond on a charge of harboring Karpis in New Orleans.
Del Rio post office reports instructions from the Post Office Department that beginning June 15 1936 the Treasury Department will mail many registered letters containing bonus bonds and checks for Veterans' Adjusted Service Certificates. Letters must be delivered only to the addressee within the original jurisdiction and clearly marked Deliver to Addressee Only. Postal workers are forbidden to make any exception.
All qualified Val Verde County Democrats were named delegates to the State Democratic Convention in San Antonio on May 26. Delegates will vote as a unit. Grady Lowrey was elected county chairman and J Turney Terrell secretary at the Tuesday session in the District Court room.
SABINE PASS May 6 Captain Matt Calliais who runs a local fishing launch will carry homing pigeons on summer cruises. The birds will be released if trouble arises and fly to his Sabine base where his wife will relay the message and summon help.
Balloting across California and South Dakota shows Alf Landon rebuffed by California Republicans while maintaining a slight edge over Borah in South Dakota. Hoover allies favor unpledged delegates in California amid opposition to the Roosevelt administration. In South Dakota London trails by about 1,218 votes as about 70,000 counted. Roosevelt vote exceeds Republican support in the state with around 750,000 cast.
Fire Chief Harry Arfman resigns after five years leading the department. John Schrier, longtime assistant chief, is appointed to succeed him as fire marshal and chief, effective Saturday following a City Commission meeting. City Engineer Paul Blevins to perform inspections. Boies to continue as driver.
Mrs. Nellie Buchanan was re appointed assessor collector for the Del Rio Independent School District at a board meetingTuesday night. Her re appointment begins her 16th year in the post and last year’s tax collection reached about 85 percent, a district record.
Reuben Holmes, West Texas Chamber of Commerce delegate, spoke at the Roswell Hotel noon Rotary Club luncheon on My Home Town. Three new members were initiated Woody Wilson, T O Dickinson and Nat E Prazier. Jas C Netts invited Del Rio businessmen to a San Antonio barbecue at San Felipe Country Club. The State Department announced a reciprocal trade pact with France to be signed in Washington. Details were withheld but the goal is to lower restrictions on American products while France remains a major customer.
Hugh Nugent Fitzgerald 73 renowned Texas newspaper figure dies at his Austin home after illness. Survived by widow Donna Roberts Fitzgerald and two grandchildren. previously married to a first wife who died 20 years ago. His career included posts at Dallas Morning News Dallas Times Herald Fort Worth Record Wichita Falls Record and chief editorial writer for Austin group papers.
The Southwest wool market remained active with two major sales signaling higher prices. Wardlaw Brothers sold 80,000 pounds of 12 month wool at 32 cents to Jackson Hughes, while Joe Blakeney moved three carloads to Boston dealers at 31 or 30 cents. Buyers including Montague, Richey, and Hughes probed Del Rio for more deals as Producers Wool and Mohair prepares 2.75 million pounds in its warehouse.
A burning basket of clothing ignited the home of Joe Jackson in San Felipe around 4 30 Tuesday afternoon. The fire caused about 30 in damages to the building and destroyed the basket. Chief Harry Altman said the origin of the blaze in the outdoor clothes basket was undetermined.
