Del Rio events highlight senior class plans for Baccalaureate on May 25 at the First Baptist Church with exercises by the seniors and separate program at the First Methodist auditorium. Junior and senior classes held a dance at Ban Felipe Country Club with Mexican orchestra and decorations in pink and orchid.
Governor Dan Mowdryway commuted the death sentence of Percy Howard who was to be electrocuted May 9. The renunciation followed witness recants and the governor cited new testimony and questions about the case. Howard, associated with N. V. Nixon of El Pass, remains imprisoned for life.
The five Texas wool co-operatives seek slogans under ten words for their letterheads with prizes of 50 dollars for first, 25 for second and 15 for third. Open to US entrants, entries due May 12 at Contest Committees San Angelo. Judges to announce May 18.
Livestock receipts show 13,000 cattle and 15,000 hogs with holdovers. Lambs sold 25 to 40 cents higher in Monday trading, with top woolled lambs at 11 dollars. Hogs moved 10 to 15 cents below Friday's average amid the mixed demand.
Prank Goldborough a 19 year old aviator plans to return to New York to attempt to beat his own 34 hours 3 minutes junior trans continental flight record. He landed at an outlying airport Sunday afternoon to shave time despite unfavourable weather and says the final leg neared 40 miles in the same minutes as the earlier stretch. He departed Westfield New Jersey last Monday heading to Colton California and was accompanied by a group of planes. The previous record of 48 hours was set by Dick James.
The Howard County grand jury convened to consider a murder charge against contractor C. C. Chambers after Ray Jones, a farmer, died from a Saturday shooting. Jones had told the district attorney the fatal shooting ended a quarrel over some dogs.

San Angelo and Waco floated as possible convention cities with the All West Texas Manufacturers Exhibit drawing participants from El Paso to Amarillo.
Funeral arrangements move forward for Smoky Adams of Ozona pilot Jack Thorp age 21 and Maneum Johns of Imperial after a Sunday crash near Port Stockton. The plane stalled two hundred feet up, Thorp died two hours later and others died at the wreck. Heavy hailstorm in Eagle Pass caused about ten thousand dollars in damages to glass and roofs.
In McAlester Oklahoma May 5 two men R F Vanderver age 26 from Eldorado Arkansas and Dewey Billings age 92 from Yellville Arkansas were killed when a Rock Island train ran over them. They worked on a rate road work gang and reportedly fell asleep on the tracks.

A man named 10 Ross of Pandale was bitten when he crushed a spider against his arm with a towel Saturday night. The bite swelled Sunday morning with severe arm and hand pain prompting medical treatment brought by his wife and brother Rufus Ross.
In Southbend, Eng a sailor told the mayor he is tired of the sea and wants to settle down after the mayor published a letter from an unemployed man offering to marry any woman who would provide him work. The exchange is part of hundreds of letters received following that initial plea.
The Del Rio Cowboys swept the San Antonio Blue Bells with scores 3-1 and 7-1. Melugin led Cowboys with four hits in Sundays win, Barbee Saxon Ward and De La Fuente supplied key two base hits, Sparks struck out 14 in a complete game on Sunday while Scott and Dikes split pitching duties Saturday. Blue Bells managed five hits and one run Saturday, and one hit Sunday with two runs scoring on two-base hits.
The $1,000,000 libel suit by R B Creager Republican national committeeman from Texas against Collier's Magazine publishers opened in federal court. Witnesses and depositions were gathered with 48 subpoenas sought, 35 to Hidalgo County residents and 13 to Cameron County. Owen P White, author of the articles, arrived to assist defense counsel.
Medford woman Mary Myra uses only four letters of the alphabet to spell both her first and last names, a curious naming quirk that has drawn local interest.
Fort Worth May 5 Trial of John Alsup ex policeman opened after a defense motion to try co defendant A P Boyt first was denied. Alsup charged with framing the First State Bank of Polytechnic robbery and killings to gain a dead bandit reward. Boyt barber confessed leading to Alsup’s arrest.
Funeral services for Mrs. William Stevenson 65 were held in Uvalde with relatives in Del Rio and Brackettville. A Southwest Texas pioneer, she owned the Stevenson Hotel in Uvalde for four decades and is survived by husband William Stevenson two sons W D Stevenson and EF G Stevenson a daughter Mrs J G Heyen and siblings including Elizabeth Miller Ed and John Gilder.
EB V Easterling and Mrs Easterling with BE V Jr travel by car to Bryan for a two day fire department executives instruction school. Noted speakers will address the gathering and manufacturers will demonstrate firefighting apparatus at College Station. The chief expects to return by Wednesday. The event is an annual affair.
In Manchester England nine year old Frederick Lane was buried alive as the roof of a sand cave collapsed while he sat singing Sonny Boy. He survived though severely shaken and taken to a hospital for checks.
John W. Brady, gray haired veteran of many court battles, goes on trial in Dallas for murder in the Lehlia Highsmith stabbing case from Austin on November 9. The jury venire of 600 names is read as witnesses are summoned and the defense seeks delays. The case marks Brady’s return after his first trial ended without verdict amid debates on intoxication and mental capacity.
