Mrs. Frances Eleanor Smith of Claremont California was chosen American Mother of 1936 by the Golden Rule Foundation Mothers Day committee. The 53 year old mother of four sons and two daughters will bear the title for one year and join in the Golden Rule observance on Mother's Day May 10 in New York. One of her sons Blackwell Smith is a New York lawyer. The selection highlights families managing on small incomes.
Rep Marion Zioncheck’s Florida trip was halted in Charlotte by a second speeding arrest in three days. In Austin acting Governor Woodul refused to block Virgil Stalcup’s scheduled Monday electrocution for Sheriff W B Arthur murder in Dickens County West Texas.
Edgar Morton former director of the Myerhold Theatre of Moscow said American theatre is an industry not an art in a Philadelphia talk at Settlement Music School on April 26. He contrasted with the Russian theatre which he said raises problems and seeks solutions.

Buffalo authorities ordered a drastic cut in free school lunches, limiting meals to a bowl of soup and a sandwich at five cents due to a $350 remaining free-food budget. Earlier meals cost 15 cents and included soup bread butter hot dish dessert and milk. The Board of Education will reconvene May 2 to decide, after serving about 4,000 meals daily this year totaling around $85,000.
