A Washington correspondent describes an informal tease about a candidate for postmaster and recalls a former editor who lent money with interest. The piece then mentions the upcoming 60th Kentucky Derby with notable race entries.
More than 300 delegates from 30 towns in Southwest Texas will attend the semi annual Southwest Texas Odd Fellows Association convention in Del Rio Friday and Saturday. Officers include Ww Adams Del Rio chairman and J E Thompson Kerrville second vice president. The program features speeches by district officers and special guests, a memorial service, dances, and multiple Rebekah Lodge activities.
Saverio Longo in the market district was knocked out when his horse collided with an oats bucket and fell onto his head. The incident left Longo briefly unconscious but no further injuries are reported.
Sam Martin, nine year old son of Mr and Mrs R L Martin, visited The News office to report an accident involving Russel Woolf. He asked where writers stay and provided information before press time, saying he would have been there sooner if he knew where to go.
Cincinnati report states William Cooper Procter, 73, chairman of Procter Gamble, died today of pneumonia. Denver dispatch notes talk of possible government control to curb overproduction of metals, as Charles W. Henderson of the U S Bureau of Mines spoke to Colorado School of Mines students.
Del Rio visitor Mr. Deal spends last week in Mills Brown Lampasas and San Saba Counties to support his campaign. This week he travels to Uvalde Kinney and Val Verde Counties with supporters saying his rain remark was his most important action.
Russel Woolf 12 son of Mr and Mrs Fred Woolf was slightly improved at Williams Sanitarium after a left jaw fracture from a two car collision while leaving Central Elementary School on West Garfield. Witnesses said he ran to meet his mother in a parked car and dodged one vehicle into another. The accident occurred at 2 45 PM and a San Angelo man driving the involved car took him and his mother to the hospital. Principal R M Bankhead called the incident unavoidable as students had just been dismissed.
City Commission unanimously passes an ordinance approving a 77000 dollar loan and 15009 dollar grant to fund the San Felipe water system. The government contract requires a 30 hour week, hiring priorities for ex servicemen, and local labor listings. bonds mature through 1964 with revenues from the system funding retirement.
Victoria May 2 Mrs Eminest W Conway 45 who vanished April 27 feared drowned in the Guadalupe River was found alive near her home dressed in the night clothes she wore when missing. She said she had been in river bottoms above Victoria the past week subsisting on grass and water. She was weak and emaciated. This is the fourth disappearance with prior rescues in Galveston Bay and near Bloomington.
Farmers along the Huerfano River in southern Colorado report trout entering irrigation ditches and ending up stranded on fields. They may be gathered by farmers at the ditch heads to save the fish from dying.
In Paris on May 2 police announced a large German spy organization was uncovered with the arrest of an agent described as an officer of foreign power. A warrant was issued for other members as investigators linked the case to Captain Froge, a French army officer implicated in the disappearance of defense plans for a city.
In Paris on May Day the police fought a pitched battle with Communists in a tough quarter. Four officers were wounded as Communists fired from barricades and apartment windows. After four hours the police stormed the Communist citadel.
The Court of Criminal Appeals reversed and remanded the life sentence for Charles S. Richardson of Olney in the slaying of his son Elga on January 1. The ruling cited prejudice in the county where the homicide occurred and ordered further action by a Young County jury.
Washington May 2 divergent Democratic and Republican views were submitted to the House as it wound up the investigation of Dr. William A. Wirt's claims that administration brain trusters aimed to overthrow the social order. The majority report urged no action and no recommendation while two Republicans argued the investigation was incomplete.
Ray mond Hamilton agreed to name the man who shot J. N. Bucher during the April 30 1932 Hillsboro filling station robbery. Authorities would not press death penalty and would inform Hamilton in a few days. Roosevelt works on bimetallic plan but White House silent on next move.
Two masked men robbed A. L. Ewings service station in Cleburne of about 15 dollars. They fled after their car overturned, leaving Ewings injured in the wrecked vehicle as they escaped on foot.
The Rio Independent School District board plans a post session meeting to consider renditions and financial status. A separate conference announced a called session to discuss the audit of school accounts for a three year term awarded to F G Rodgers & Company, with audits at fiscal year end August 31.
Dr. Geo W Cox president elect and Roy M Andrews secretary lead Del Rio Rotary Club members to Laredo for the 47th Annual District Conference to be presided over by Walter R Jenkins of Houston. Mrs Cox and Mrs Andrews accompany the delegates as hundreds are expected to attend and each club must be represented. Mr Poag and his wife plan to travel to the convention city as Poag retires from the presidency.
A Del Rio bound truck loaded with strawberries was forced into a ditch east of Del Rio when a deserted car stalled on the highway blocked the lane near a culvert. The truck rolled over while attempting to pass. No injuries were reported and the stalled car owner left after calling a wrecker.
Del Rio reported 1.41 inches of rain from 8:00 p m Tuesday to 1:30 a m Wednesday, the heaviest since September 1932 floods. The downpour flooded streets and roofs, with motorists seeking garage aid as showers covered the region. Officials noted this rain wiped a long rainfall deficiency and put the year 90 inches above normal, marking the first rain over an inch this year.
Rains near cloudburst levels drenched the north Panhandle last night. Bridges washed out and rail and road traffic delayed. Dirt roads south of Amarillo became impassable as streams and lakes rose. Pleas Pool a driller died near Shamrock in the storm from lightning.
Brackettville schools reelect all teachers. A. R. Davis named superintendent for two years and Cecil Allen as principal. In the colored schools E. H. Harris was re-elected principal.
E. F. Brandenburg of Manitou Colorado says he has been picking lemons from a tree ordered from a seed catalog for 27 years. He notes the plant bears fruit at an altitude between 7 000 and 8 000 feet, proving surprising adaptability to high elevations.

Tomorrow Thursday will be partly cloudy with more thundershowers and cooler temperatures, with the north east and extreme west zones seeing cooler air. Maximum yesterday reached 82, minimum 67, and early morning low 61.
