Rebels Surrender Agua Prieta Stronghold In Mexico

The Agua Prieta garrison near Sonora surrendered to Mexican federal troops on amnesty terms offered by General Almazan as he advances from Chihuahua. Some 900 rebels under General Antonio Medina gave up, leaving General Escobar as the remaining insurgent leader, possibly heading toward the boundary.

Odd Fellows Hold Meeting with Eagle Pass Lodge Visitors

Fifteen Odd Fellows from the Eagle Pass lodge visited Del Rio for a special program. Two new members received the first degree Alfred Geib and Jim Smith. The visitors and Del Rio members shared addresses and refreshments after the ceremony. An invitation was extended for Del Rio to complete the remaining degrees in Eagle Pass next Monday. Work on the new hall progresses toward a future dedication involving the Austin lodge and Barry Miller.

Party visits Austin to urge arts and industries college funding

Porter A. Whaley of the Kingsville area chamber joins a South Texas committee heading to Austin to meet with the Senate Finance Committee about funding for the College of Arts and Industries at Kingsville. The school, formerly South Texas State Teachers College, was transformed to meet future regional growth needs. Other travelers include H. B. Baldwin, Dr. R. B. Cousins, E. B. Erard, and Ray Leeman.

Fire Destroys East Del Rio Home in Early Morning Blaze

Fire destroyed a small wooden home owned by Car ado Guero in East Del Rio at dawn. The loss was valued at $500 without insurance as firefighters struggled to reach a distant water supply and could not save the building.

Federal Court Session Set for Immigration Cases in Del Rio

Judge Duval West from San Antonio will hold a called federal court session in Del Rio to hear immigration law violations where defendants plead guilty. There will be no jury, and deportation is likely in each case. Immediate action is needed as a new immigration law, effective March 4, is filling jails fast. U S Commissioner Smith has already committed many offenders and sent a bus to Eagle Pass under Judge West’s direction.

Caldwell Brothers Reunite After 27 Years in Breckenridge

Lila Sharpe Run Over By Speeder

Mrs. Turner Keller was called to San Antonio on account of the serious injury to her niece Lila Sharpe age 12 daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Sharpe The girl was run over by a speeding automobile and is confined in a hospital for several weeks The driver of the car assumes responsibility for the accident and is paying hospital expenses The Sharpe family formerly lived in Del Rio and have many friends here

Hutchinson County Wheat Crop Forecast Says Heavy Yield Ahead

Barger May 1. Hutchinson county wheat acreage is larger and in better shape than in 1928. J R Kirk county commissioner forecasts at least 50 000 bushels this year with 20 bushels or more per acre. Several more rains are needed to insure the crop.

Air student and Brooke Field officer from the Philippines, a West Point graduate, died instantly today while trying to land a plane on the auxiliary field at Brooks Field. In Lufkin Tony Wilson, 45, a city employee, died from injuries after being struck by a Southern Pacific train last night.

Cousins Reunite After 65 Years Across Texas

J W Newton of Del Rio and John Newton of Brownwood, cousins, met in Del Rio yesterday for the first time since the Civil War era. John came from San Angelo with nephew Billy Gaines. They recalled home spun suits and the barrow knife borrowed long ago as they shared memories. Newton plans to stay in Del Rio a few days.

May 1. The rejection of Lola B Roller an 11 year old divorcee provoked a tragic double killing in Waxahachie. Harry F Dowling of Temple shot then fled as Hemp kin killed Roller. Hempkin, Roller's uncle, was later killed by a county grand jury after the doctor had shot Roller three times.
