Postmaster Ray Ross reported postal receipts for January through March 1936 totalled 11 856 34 dollars, up from 8 604 36 dollars in 1935. He attributed the boost to Dr. John R. Brinkley and his radio station, and predicted Del Rio could regain class A status next year if the trend continues.
With about 600 car and truck licenses still to be issued the office of Lyle S. Almond county tax assessor and collector will stay open 8 to 10 tonight and again on April 1 until crowds lessen closing only from 5 30 to 6 30. Last year’s figures show many licenses remain to be issued and Wednesday April 1 is the last day to operate without a new license. Almond reported 161 drivers licenses 176 car licenses 51 truck licenses and 36 farm truck licenses issued Monday.
Rev. L B Gilbert of First Baptist Church urged donations of household furniture furnishings curtains and essentials for the C V Cap Fellows family after a Friday blaze destroyed their home and its 211 items including a two month old infant. He requested contact for donors through the church to supply needed items.
Orville Carpenter, Texas pension director, said unofficial information indicates the Federal Social Security Board will locate an office in Austin. Plans for a $500,000 Federal Building under construction were revised to provide space for the board.
A three judge Federal Court in Austin ruled the Texas Gas Conservation Act ratable taking provisions invalid while upholding the ban on sweet gas for carbon black. The decision favors Texhoma Natural Gas and Consolidated Gas and grants a permanent injunction against the commission order. The ruling questions state power to force ratable purchases and may be appealed to the U S Supreme Court.
Del Ricans donated 173.20 dollars to Val Verde County Red Cross flood relief. Local quota was 110 dollars. Frank Schmidt led fundraising with many small gifts. State Highway Department employee contributed 10 dollars. M. P. Garrett chaired employer donations, relieving Schmidt. Sons of Herman gave 5 dollars. Aylmer Gilmer at Del Rio National Bank is Red Cross treasurer for further gifts.
Son of Mrs Ida Stewart of Del Rio T S Stewart has been appointed trainmaster at El Paso for the Texas and New Orleans Railroad Co. He was formerly stationed in Del Rio and is now trainmaster at Austin. The El Paso office of assistant superintendent was abolished when W R Mann was appointed assistant superintendent with headquarters at San Antonio. Mann succeeds H F Kelley, who resigned.
In Washington on March 31 4 the Supreme Court denied Mrs Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt custody of her 12 year old daughter Gloria in a high profile family case centered on rights and welfare.
Berlin reports Nazi officials discuss amending the criminal code to legalize killing in a duel. Privy to the bid is the belief that honor demands defending manly virtue, with the army as the duel’s stronghold and past rulers failing to curb its toll.
A proposal by Transportation Co-ordinator Eastman outlines a national unemployment insurance fund for transit workers. Rail, motor, water and air carriers would pay payroll taxes into the federal fund, replacing state systems, with benefits tied to prior earnings for a designated maximum period.
A belated cold wave swept into Texas lowering temperatures below freezing then moved northward. Amarillo and Pampas reported lows of 36 degrees with some damage to early fruit while South Texas remained unaffected.
The House appropriations committee recommended 3.3 million dollars for International Boundary Commission works along the Rio Grande. Funds earmarked include 1.2 million for channel rectification, 1.6 million for flood control in the Lower Rio Grande, and 1.006 million for a diversion dam construction.

Gondar Ethiopia March 31. The strategic city at the head of Lake Tana fell into Italian hands today. The capture is seen as the most important victory in the war to date, with Lake Tana supplying water to Anglo Egyptian Sudan and Egypt, vital to British interests.
The FCC designated W. R. Cammack as first class radio telephone operator after exams with an 85 percent average. A license was enclosed with the notification. Cammack is assistant to the chief engineer at Radio Station XERA and took the exams in San Antonio two weeks ago.
The Senate lobby committee completed its field investigation while a new outburst echoed on the Senate floor. Senator Minton of Indiana condemned Hearst claiming freedom of the press equates to license to traduce and vilify public officers as swine and traitors to their country.
