Five children froze to death in a Colorado school bus trapped by a mile of snow for 30 hours as storm debris blocked aid. The driver Carl Miller is missing presumed dead, with 18 other students found alive after efforts by Ernie Johnson and Abe Stone who braved the snow to reach the bus.
Across the country high winds and snowdrifts toppled power lines and shut mountain passes. Temperatures plummeted to near zero as two Nebraska boys Boyd Evans seven Max Neb and Roy Fountaine thirteen wandered into a blizzard causing a nationwide search and fears for their safety. Crops suffered damage in several frosty regions and warnings extended into Texas and Canada.
Weather observer H L Molyneux reports rising temperatures and clear skies for Del Rio and surrounding areas on Sunday. A cold snap Friday night fell to around 3 degrees, but damage to fruit crops or livestock is not expected. Strong winds cooled temperatures on Thursday into Friday, dropping nearly 40 degrees from Thursday afternoon’s peak of 81.
The Texas Gas Utilities Company arrives in Del Rio to deliver natural gas service. The modern headquarters building signals a new era for the city as residents gain access to reliable energy.
With no candidates registered by noon Saturday for four Behal School Board seats to be filled at the April 4 special election, secretary F W Ner announces a March deadline for filings. In Austin Texas the Senate moves to finish debate on the $206 million highway bond issue with a Monday special order. Amendments are rejected and a plan to cut bonds to $112 million is defeated. Senator Martin led a brief filibuster delaying final action as House members push bills on pink bollworm and Anderson County tick quarantines.

Texas Gas Utilities, a major new industry in Del Rio, reports an annual payroll near 50 000 and now occupies offices on Main Street. The firm serves 38 private residences and most leading industrial businesses, plans expansion to Fort Clark Sabinal and Bracketville, and operates daily gas flows of 19.9 million cf from Maverick County and 48 million cf from Zavala County. The company offers appliance stock and equipment for industrial customers, led by D H Tucker as VP and GM and a team of seven executives plus about 30 clerical staff in its 400 block Main Street offices.

Five people died in an early morning explosion and fire that destroyed three buildings in Loyal Wisconsin. The victims, all residents of second floor apartments above the shops, were identified as Mrs Matthew Beaver 23 Mrs Joseph Shobar 30 Mrs Frank Christensen Robert Christensen 10 and Maric Christensen 4.
James Cox, Democratic presidential nominee in 2020, underwent an operation for appendicitis in Miami Florida today. The news notes Cox is recovering and will remain hospital bound for observation.
Mohair buyers claim the bottom has been reached as National Wool Marketing Corporation holds 14 million pounds and aims to stabilize prices around 30 cents per grown pound and 40 cents for kid hair in Boston. Texas clips are strong this year, and Sol Mayer is favored to become corporation president at the April stockholders meeting in Chicago.
In Houston a man known as Don Kadjar works as a roughneck at Raccoon Bend oil fields. He is revealed to be Prince Darab Mirza Kadjar of Persia, heir to the Persian throne, who says he would rather work in oil than seek the throne and plans to return to Persia to serve his people.
A 23 year old airplane pilot William Johnson is dead after a motor boat capsized on the Neches River. The boat drifted a hour after the motor died and struck a snag. Pete Stuart 21 tried to pull him ashore but Johnson resisted with his last effort. In McAllen Texas George Switzer a salesman was killed when his auto was struck by a Missouri Pacific passenger train near here.
Hope rose in Del Rio as orders to dismantle the dispatcher's office were rescinded. KE Charles Cole, chief dispatcher for 24 years, and five staffers were moved earlier, but L. B. McDonald of the Sunset route ordered equipment left in place and the office spared. The reversal suggested returning salaries totaling about $15,000 annually to Del Rio if staff could be reassigned locally.
About 665000 pounds of wool have been sold in West Texas since the first sale of early shorn lamb wool. Prices range 17 to 22 cents with a 20 cent sale to White Brothers of Mason. Wool comes from about 6000 sheep on J W White ranch. National Wool Marketing Corp has shipped five carloads. Tentative advances 10 to 20 cents. Chicago meeting April 10 may set further raises. Foreign market up 20 to 25 percent in the last month.
After a Del Rio visit by L B McDonald, Alpine rumors shift from a roundhouse move to a new $10 000 pumping plant to improve water supply. Engineer H G Olmsted to supervise, with Alpine water profits reported at 4500 net last year. S P sees Alpine as a potential division point amid regional railroad expansion.
A Del Rio ranchman says both domestic and world wool markets are strong and poised for a gradual rise over the next two to three years. He cites rock bottom already reached, recovery in London sales, and price increases from 3.4 to 44.8 pence per pound as evidence of an ascending market.
