Mr and Mrs C E Barker and their four year old son were seriously hurt when their Ford coupe struck a telephone pole on Lovers Lane. They were treated at William Sanatorium with stitches to lip nose scalp and facial injuries described as painful but not life threatening.
Three men believed to be burglars who ransacked numerous San Angelo homes are in police custody. One claimed to be an army deserter from Marfa, the other two said they deserted Fort Clark, with telegrams from the posts confirming their admissions.
Governor Moody hints in a Houston address to the Texas Cattle Raisers Convention that he may not seek another term. If he does not run in 1930 he is expected to return to private law practice, a path few governors have successfully pursued after leaving Austin.
Information arrives of the death of T. R. Saunders, a Fort Worth resident and member of the Old Trail Drivers' association. He died at his home Tuesday afternoon. funeral services will be held in Fort Worth Thursday. Saunders was closely connected to George W. Saunders, president of the Old Trail Drivers, and spent his life in Texas, with years in insurance and ranching in Texas and Oklahoma. Born Coniad September 23, 1872.
Irene Curtis 19 of Brady was released on 500 bond after a daylight robbery at Farmers and Merchants State Bank last week. Lucille Awalt of Brady and Billie Ballard of Austin failed to post 2500 bond each. Coy Nigh, 17, had case moved to juvenile court with a Thursday hearing likely. R C Turner alleged to have walked into the bank at pistol point took 2300 and fled in a waiting car with the three women, held on 8000 bond.
The Del Rio Evening News reports it is expanding its offices with a 20 by 25 foot addition to house a new press and stereotyping equipment arriving around early April. An open house will be held for the public to view daily printing operations once setup is complete.
The San Angelo Times reports talk of the Santa Fe extending its line from Sonora to Del Rio, possibly five to fifteen years off. Judge C O Harris, Santa Fe attorney, says no firm plans exist and the $5,000,000 cost would deter immediate action. A Del Rio committee may be sent to San Angelo for a directors meeting to present or seek a proposal.
In Bismarck North Dakota March 27 the Missouri River rose two feet above flood stage due to an ice jam. Farmers flee to bluffs as flood damage looms. Fort Riley planes are to blast the jam to release waters. Officials call this the worst flood in 40 years.
Late reports on L. N. Arthur who was seriously hurt in the Sanderson railroad yard say his condition has improved. He has one broken bone below the right knee and severe bruising to his back and other parts. He resides in San Angelo with his father, a conductor on the Orient railroad.
Dispatches credit the Bastrop Advertiser as Texas’ oldest weekly paper, and Bastrop Hospital as first in a small city to obtain radium. In fact the Victoria Advocate, established 1846, is Texas’ oldest weekly newspaper and Victoria Hospital was the first in a small city to be equipped with radium for treatment. Dr. J H Lander purchased a $10,000 radium tube for the hospital four years ago.
The attorney general's department on Tuesday approved $38,000 in fire station bonds for San Angelo. The bonds are serials bearing 5 percent interest.
Joe Nagy 49 of the Nagy Witherspoon interests was found dead at the foot of a 36 foot windmill tower near his ranch south of Dilley. Mexican workers alerted Mrs. Nagy and helped move the body. Physicians said neck was broken and injuries were extensive. Possible fan strike or heart attack while on the platform.
Kerrville March 27 Two prize milk goats that scored high in the livestock exposition at San Antonio are now the property of W. C. Bel of Kerrville. He bought a buck and a doe of Nubian stock from Mrs. L. O. Johnson at Lytle. Goat milk use in this region is growing and a goat milk dairy about five miles west of Kerrville is operating.
Governor Moody works late reading 102 bills left on his desk from the 41st Legislature. He plans to sign or veto by April 3, but may group acts for clarity. The process, slow and thorough, involves cross checking against existing statutes and possible local measures.
More than 4000 Texas & Pacific trainmen voted to strike after the company refused to compensate workers who lost homes in Longview when the division point moved to Mineola. The action follows the official ballot count among employees.
Clifford Harris, 16, was arrested in Dallas and confessed to being part of a trio that tried to capture Night Watchman Echols at Van Alstyne last Thursday. He said Dick fired the fatal shot, the group fled toward McKinney, then traveled on to Dallas and West Texas.
Coleman reports Denny Dixon among two suspects arrested near the town. He was taken to Ballinger for safekeeping after officers said he admitted taking part in an attempted bank robbery Thursday night at Van Alstyne where night watchman W. L. Nichols was killed. He is also tied to a Saturday holdup of a filling station in which Elgie Leslie was seriously wounded.
About thirty five Rotary Club members and guests attended a Roswell lunch. H McElroy spoke for Del Rio Vocational Department urging support for high school boys entering events at A and M college and the Del Rio sheep and goat show. A $300 fund drive was approved to assist the vocational department. Austin Callan then spoke on Irish Inconsistencies.
U S troops deploy in Naco Arizona streets for police duties as rebel forces under General Fausto Topete advance toward the border. Battalion headquarters establish on Main Street near the international line with Maj. Charles B Hazeltine commanding E and F companies of the 10th cavalry and I company of the 25th infantry. Topete's vanguard reportedly ten miles distant with cautious movements through rugged terrain.
NOGALES, Mar 26 G K Morrison Nevada aviator was captured by Mexican rebels it was reported today. The uncertain status leaves Morrison’s fate unclear as authorities seek confirmation from border officials.
Washington reports Mexican rebels in full retreat northward from Mazatlan. Consul William Blocker says they are about 50 miles north at Quila. Rail and telegraph lines should be restored by week’s end. Ambassador Morrow says Sinola strength near 2000 with no change in Chihuahua.
The University of Missouri sex questionnaire that disrupted its campus will be published in the Texas Barb. The Daily Texan reports an official decision. the University Student Council begins an investigation into student activities, but not about this matter.
The Nanking government announced a campaign to suppress military oppositionists in Hunan as warlords concentrate troops near Kwangsi and Hunan. Dispatches from Chefoo report severe fighting as General Chang seeks to seize control from the Nationalist government.
The mayor and city commissioners designate Monday April 15 as the first day of Del Rio's annual Clean-up Campaign. Civic organizations lead the effort with the city dividing into zones and providing trucks for trash removal. Further campaign details will follow.
