The Senate judiciary committee heard Senator Wheeler of Montana as the first witness in opposition to Roosevelt's Supreme Court revamp proposal. Public information committee announced ex-Justice John H Clarke would speak from San Diego on NBC tonight from 9 to 9:15 pm ET. Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama and South Carolina governors were set to speak on Saturday night as part of a national radio program. Raymond Moley, former assistant secretary of state and current magazine editor, was slated to follow Wheeler, arguing the plan undermines democratic government.
Bethlehem Steel Corporation announced a policy on collective bargaining offering to bargain in individual plants with any groups for the employer they represent. The firm notes 20 years of practice and current talks in 23 plants with labor groups including the Steel Workers' Organizing Committee, affiliates of the CIO. The statement emphasizes employees’ representation plans while recognizing minority and individual rights to bargain directly or via representatives.
Samuel Bruce Stafford 720, uncle of the late Ross Stafford of Del Rio, died in a local hotel Saturday at 9 pm after being ill since Thursday. He visited Del Rio last year and had spent two weeks here en route to Chicago. A member of Stafford Brothers livestock in Chicago, he had 45 years in business. Mrs Stafford left Chicago by plane upon learning of his illness and arrived in Del Rio Saturday morning. The body was sent to Chicago Sunday for funeral services likely on Wednesday.
Five Val Verde County range committee members traveled from Del Rio to the Ranch Experiment Station between Sonora and Rocksprings for a special meeting on the 1937 Ranch program. Attendees included J. B. Kidd CT Cupples Martin Rose Jimmie Mills Herbert Dodd and Fred McReynolds.

A tornado struck Gaffney South Carolina damaging homes and injuring seven people
F. A. Adams of Del Rio displayed firm full sized heads of lettuce grown in his garden. Both heads were well shaped and as good as lettuce shipped to Del Rio.
In New York opening, cotton prices advance to 1.25 per base amid renewed foreign market strength. Jefferson reports a murder complaint filed against Charlie Brooks, who allegedly confessed to killing Sheriff Alex Brown after the shotgun used was found. The House suspended rules to allow a malodorant gas odor bill introduced, citing the New London tragedy as justification.
All connections and gas equipment in the Del Rio Independent School District were inspected Sunday by Ira Lane ford of the Texas Gas Distributing Company and R. M. Bankhead, district superintendent. Inspections covered Del Rio High, Junior, North Heights, and West End Elementary. Bankhead reported all vents open and systems in first class condition, with detailed notes on boiler rooms and stoves. The all-day Sunday check followed the New London disaster to ensure safety.
The Fifth Circuit, in a unanimous ruling, sustains the Social Security Act tax provisions. The case involving Charles C. Steward Machine Co of Birmingham and a 1936 payment of 4614 to the internal revenue collector was dismissed by the Northern District of Alabama, leaving the appeal affirmed.
Del Rio Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce begin a house to house canvass this week for the annual yard and garden contest under Mrs. Paul J Pong. April 1 is the entry deadline and blanks are available from the Chamber. The club also oversees the final City Federation of Women's Clubs program on April 24 and will sponsor the annual flower show.
In Fort Davis on March 22 outlying uptown voters defeated the measure to legalize beer sales, 76 to 9, amid a dry status in the area.
On Monday assessor-Collector Lyle S Almond warned that only eight days remain to rest oration of motor vehicle licenses. As of Saturday 692 cars 56 trucks and 83 farm trucks had licenses issued. Last year at this date 1072 licenses were issued with 829 cars 103 trucks and 140 farm trucks. Expires April 1 and last year 2271 licenses were issued with 1751 cars 295 trucks and 225 farm trucks. Based on last year’s data Almond said 1415 licenses and 1059 cars 214 trucks and 142 farm trucks remain to be issued.
Alvin F Jones 65 former secretary of the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce died Sunday in Galveston. A veteran newspaper man he worked in the Houston bureau of the Galveston News and the Fort Worth bureau of the Daily News. Survived by wife two sons and two daughters. Burial in Fort Worth Tuesday morning.
Crafton Hatley, a Black man from Brackettville, faced district court in Brackettville before Judge Montgomery on a murder charge. The case stems from a woman’s death in Brackettville allegedly caused by a car driven by Halle.
