Two Del Rioans addressed the Quemado PTA meeting Friday evening in Quemado. Jas C Netts Del Rio Chamber of Commerce manager spoke on roads and John L B Dodson Del Rio attorney spoke on parent teacher associations and the schools in support of the constitution of the United States. About 100 attended.
Del Rio Independent School District pupils observed Texas Day with programs honoring Gov. James V. Alfred. North Heights School fourth and fifth graders opened with Texas songs directed by Miss Ethel Skevington. History pupils presented talks on Texas under six flags. Students Mack Haigler Cleta Womack Felix Harrison Lorrain Haley Wallie Hodge Mamie Sadler George Adams Olivia Lee Randolph took phase roles. Johnnie Green and C W Adams sang two cowboy ballads An Empty Cat in the Bunkhouse and Wahoo with Adams on mandolin.
Kerrville March 21 The Alamo at San Antonio was a turning point for teamsters when David N Winarton of Kerr County drove an ox drawn wagon across Texas in Civil War days. He arrived in Texas in 1857 and earned a gross of 600 dollars for a major haul, giving the money to his mother to buy land. He recalls tipping his wagon at the Alamo and witnessing camel train pack animals at Camp Verde. He describes camels startling horses during a Sunday meeting, prompting the minister to suspend services. In 1886 he joined six men on a foray to recover stolen cattle after Indians took six of seven horses. He remains active in riding and local events.
