Washington dispatch outlines a move from Civil Works to a Work Division within the Federal Emergency Relief Administrator. Decentralization would place county agents to tailor aid, aiming to lift about 120,000 farm families from relief to self-sufficiency through land-based support and rural public works.
Culberson Deal of San Angelo seeks the new 21st district seat. A lifelong Democrat born April 14, 1894 in Angelina County, he moved to the district as a child and later led the San Angelo Board of City Development. He backed West Texas farmer interests, served in World War I, and has a wife and two sons.
The Del Rio Independent School District will begin seizing automobiles to collect delinquent personal taxes. Tax committee members announced that no court action is needed beyond issuing citations to a special appointed deputy who handles the collection. The deputy's appointment will be announced by week’s end.
March 20 a fire destroyed the one story dwelling of A B Denny on West Hopkins Street in San Marcos. The fire caused $4060 in structure damage and $1000 in furniture, both insured.
Federal District Court in Del Rio completed a light docket with a permanent injunction against Mayor Jno Y Long and others for a bakery bread ordinance. The city did not contest. temporary injunction had required bakery premises to be inspected by the health officer.
Weather delays continue as rescue teams wait for clear conditions to locate Byrd expedition members Bowlin and Bailey who crash landed 100 miles from Little America. Officials say they have 30 days of provisions and feel no imminent danger.
The Amarillo Tri-State Fair beef cattle division will stage the largest regional Hereford show in the United States this September. R. J. Kinzer of Kansas City, secretary of the American Hereford Breeders Association, announced the plan.
Houston March 20 a statewide movement to resist a congressional proposal that would deprive Texas citizens of community property rights was launched at a Houston meeting called by the Houston Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Tax Relief Committee. John Henry Kirby outlined the plan while lawyers and local leaders organized support and legal representation for Washington lobbying efforts.
Livestock men across the country mourn the death of John Clay founder of the John Clay Commission Company with offices in Fort Worth. Clay died at his Chicago home on Saturday just before his 84th birthday. He had long been a key figure in the livestock industry, chaired the International Livestock Exposition, and started the company 48 years ago, building ten commission houses and banking ties.
