New York police long pursued Polly Adler as their top target in a major vice crackdown. Arrested multiple times on vice charges with no prior conviction, she claimed during the Seabury inquiry of 1931 that politicians judges and financiers were her friends and patrons.
The Senate voted 5 to 18 to reject the state monopoly plan for liquor regulation if prohibition is repealed. House had rejected a similar proposal. Senator Hill defended a compromise allowing a monopoly on hard liquors while permitting beer and wine trade for profit. The motion to reconsider was tabled and another dual-question plan was killed.
Merlin Oates a 40 year old State Insurance Department employee was found dead at home with his wife fatally wounded. Justice of the Peace T E Johnson ruled murder and death by self inflicted gunshot. Mrs Oates shot her husband multiple times then killed herself. the couple had previously lived in Dublin Texas.
Citizens approved a bond issue to rebuild the meal auditorium at Fair Park ruined by the September 1933 storm. The Public Works Administration will buy the bonds and provide a grant of 17 000 to 25 000 dollars. Some reconstruction materials will be reused.
Since February 1 only 147 motor vehicles have been registered with Tax Assessor Collector Lyle S. Almond. Last year 2,415 registrations occurred by March 31. If similar totals recur, the three week period left will be busy for the five-employee office, with an estimated 350 registrations daily.
Washington March 11 the annual cost of operating the NRA code structure was estimated at 41 million dollars by Donald R Richberg who spoke to the Senate Finance Committee for the third time Senator Clark asked if the code authorities in raising this money exercised the right to levy taxes Richberg said most costs were met by voluntary contributions
San Angelo reports several land purchases in West Texas. The Wilde family bought 320 acres southeast of San Angelo at 32.50 an acre. Heslop acquired 120 acres near Sherwood at 50 an acre, incl 90 irrigated with Spring Creek frontage. Holekampf sold 1920 acres east of Junction at 10.50 an acre to Mitchell. Twelve sections of the Nine Ranch in Crockett County leased to Van Court and Beachum.
Highway officials announced that Highway No. 5 entry into Amarillo from the east will become a boulevard with two 20 foot lanes separated by a landscaped parkway. The city must maintain the stretch, with about 5800 dollars slated for labor and materials to beautify the new cut off replacing sharp turns with sweeping curves.
A 38 to 40 mile per hour wind swept the Del Rio area Monday with northerly flow in the forenoon and a shift to the west by 2 p.m. H. L. Molyneux, head of the local weather station, said the gale will lower temperatures Monday night. A light rain Sunday morning measured one one-hundredth inch.
Harold Ramgren began selling radishes 26 days after planting. He cultivated five acres with drill and sold at a rate of 520 dollars per acre.

Testimony began in Brackettville in the Jap Lowe case over 1247 pounds of mohair allegedly received and concealed by Lowe from two Mexicans. Judge Brian Montague overruled motions to quash indictment and jury panel, then denied venue change as jurors were selected. Defense attorneys include Dodson, Lare, and Schlessenger. prosecutors are Mueller and LaCrosse.
Amarillo resident Lawrence W. Hurdle aged 28 and his sister-in-law Arlene Bal lemy aged 17 of Ashtola Texas were found dead in a tourist camp near Amarillo. Coroner Charles W. Carder ruled murder and death by own action but did not specify who fired the fatal shot.
Wheeler County school trustees and teachers urge a centrally located county library to replace scattered existing branches. They call on the county commissioners court to provide a room and make a reasonable appropriation for the library’s care and management.
The Chamber of Commerce announces Tuesday through Thursday round-up crews with listed assignments from railroad to Canal and from Greenwood to Garfield. Doctors, railroad workers, and tourist camps are covered by designated committees. Crews must report to the Chamber by 9 a.m. Tuesday for instructions and supplies. Progress updates will be posted on the board beside the Texas Gas Utilities lot on Main Street.
Funeral services for Col. Wallace B. Scales, commanding officer of the Fifth Cavalry and Fort Clark, were held in the post chapel on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Chaplain MacWilliams led the service as HQ troops escorted the body to Spofford for transfer to an eastbound train. The Fifth Cavalry plus mounted troops paid military honors at Spofford and at train departure Taps rang. Burial is set for Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Scales died of a heart attack Friday afternoon.
In Oklahoma City on March 11 Morris Monson admitted drunkenness in police court. Judge Mike Foster fined him ten dollars plus costs after Monson quipped that honesty had not paid dividends.
Havana reports President Mendieta declares a state of war to quell plots against the government. Acts against public order face military trials. Night streets require passes. Transportation halts. Five bodies found in Mariano suburb. total dead for weekend rises to ten amid sporadic blasts.
Athens reports rebels battered by government artillery withdrew from a fortified Seres position. General Gialystres says government troops captured Alexandropolis in Western Thrace, forcing rebels to retreat from Macedonia. The rebel cruiser Helle reportedly abandoned Kevalla port.
County Commissioners Court in regular session received bids from the county depository and the depository for trust funds of county and district clerks on Monday morning. Officials also reviewed monthly reports and transacted routine business.
In Tucson on March 11 General Charles G. Dawes predicted the nation would shake the low mood by May to July with a real economic recovery evident by July. He and General John J. Pershing spoke of natural forces and human nature driving recovery.
AUSTIN March 11 The House voted 83 to 40 today to print on minority report the bill to increase the sulphur production tax from 1.73 cents to 2 a ton.
