V. J. Turney 69 longtime cattleman and trail driver died Friday at his Del Rio home after a long illness. Born in Coryell County on December 20, 1865 he first drove 6,400 cattle for Ohio Cattle Company to Mussel Shell River Montana in 1884. He settled near Juno in 1904 later ranching then sheep. Survived by widow Mahala Turney two daughters a son a sister and six grandchildren funeral plans set for 3 p m Saturday at the Baptist Church in Sonora.
A Houston woman, 36, is held after Spencer Fred Silver, 46, of San Antonio, was found mortally wounded in a hotel room. She told Homicide Captain George Peyton she did not remember what happened. Silver was found in a bathroom with a bullet wound and died in an ambulance.
Funeral services were held in El Paso for Mrs. Max Sibley who died at her home there on Wednesday. Del Rio friends report she had visited Del Rio many times and that her husband and three children survive. he is a former Del Rio resident.
Dalhart reports a proposal for a transient camp sparks debate. A chamber of commerce committee backs the plan citing street safety beggar reduction and crime drop after visiting a camp near Tucumcari New Mexico. The Dalhart American Legion post opposes as do railroad men fearing criminal activity.
Austin March 8 A Texas legislature session focuses on protecting lakes and rivers from pollution. The House appropriations committee approves a larger budget for the sanitary engineering division to fund projects mapping and supervising clean water efforts. W M Ehlers notes oil field salt water dumping harms streams and could justify a Gulf adjacent pipeline plan.
Palmer County treasurer B. Estsell reports the county paid two cents per jackrabbit ear and extended the bounty to March 9. The Feb payout covers more than 3 000 pairs as the commissioners seek to curb crop-eating pests.
Arch bishop Dia z of Mexico reportedly kidnapped by radicals as authorities fear for his safety. Regular airlines deny transporting the archbishop. In Austin a party line split on letting voters decide if the Legislature should vote on a pending measure.
Simple funeral services were held today for Oliver Wendell Holmes with Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and former Supreme Court colleagues in attendance. President Roosevelt planned to attend the ceremony at Arlington Cemetery.
The House labor committee today approved the Lun deen unemployment insurance old age pension bill by seven to six. The measure would authorize federal payments for unemployment and old age insurance at prevailing wage rates, not less than ten dollars weekly plus three dollars for each dependent.
Athens reports General George Kindaylis launched an offensive against rebels in the Struma Valley with a 12 plane bombing raid after Premier Tsalderis deemed prior aerial efforts vain. Two planes limped back through fog while one crashed in a gale. residents fled to outer hills seeking safety from potential bombardment.
Four persons bitten by rabid dogs since Feb 24 seek Pasteur Institute treatment. Fourteen people are under Pasteur care. Dr. Hugh White warns of potential rabies outbreak as stray dogs with rabies bite pets. El Paso residents urged to watch their animals.
The Texas House debate features Rep. Wilson Fox proposing a constitutional amendment to abolish the Senate and concentrate lawmaking in one chamber. Aimed at cutting costs, simplifying procedure, and ending dual speaker elections, the plan would create a single body of up to 150 members presided by the lieutenant governor.
President transmits for Senate confirmation the appointment of Ray Ress as postmaster at Del Rio. The notice is dated March 8 from Washington.
A Havana strike spread to transport workers as streetcar employees quit, threatening the city’s main transit. Railroad and bus workers joined the anti-government movement without setting a date. Fourteen bombs exploded overnight in Havana and suburbs, damaging the courthouse, police station, and other sites.
Preliminaries for the San Felipe Creek bridge are under way in San Antonio with Commissioner Otto Koog securing materials. Funds from $14,660 in tax warrants will be supplemented by relief labor to replace the 1887 iron bridge, spanning East Canal Street to the San Felipe side with a 24 foot width, four foot sidewalk and four foot rail. Construction awaits relief officials approval.
Delinquent tax receipts for February amounted to 6336.41 with 4000.02 allocated to the State and 2336.39 to the county. Lyle Almond's Tax Assessor-Collector office noted the moratorium on penalties and interest for delinquent taxes before August 1934 ends March 15, after which interest resumes. The moratorium did not affect delinquent 1934 taxes.
Two people died when a tractor truck was hit by a train at a grade crossing four miles northeast of Amarillo. The victims were Mrs. B. F. Ozee, a dairy operator, and Charley Jameson, 26, an Ozee dairy employee.
David Hutton was granted a final divorce in Los Angeles on March 8. Evangelist Sister Aimee Semple McPherson's personal presence at the court marked the occasion as he declared he would not seek a new marriage. Judge Dudley Valentine signed the decree after Hutton presented the document.
Weak wool prices in foreign and domestic markets reflect a large carryover from the 1934 clip. The Bureau of Agricultural Economics notes domestic stocks high at year start and cloth stocks low. 1934 carryover may be lighter than feared due to high U.S. manufacturing activity early 1935, while southern hemisphere supplies rose 11 percent above 1929 1933 average, offset by reductions in European stocks and rising activity there.
William Cyril Milburn 40 dies of heart disease early Thursday. Funeral Saturday at 10 a m in Doran Chapel with Rev H Conger Jones officiating. Milburn of Del Rio once ran a Broadway furniture store with his father W B Milburn. Survivors include his father stepmother a brother and two aunts.
March 8 report from Karnes City notes Mrs. Karl Klauser owns a cat that drinks only from a bowl containing gold fish. The cat owner reports the cat moved to eat the fish, attempting to reach the bowl.
Donald Richberg, head of the national emergency council, told the Senate finance committee that delays in NEA legislation hinder trade and industry. He pressed Congress to reduce the vast code structure as the administration recommended and to codify future rules for industries engaged in or affecting interstate commerce.
Fire destroyed the C. C. Brown ranch home on Mud Creek 18 miles from Del Rio. Mrs. Brown heard the blaze and found the roof in flames. neighbors could not save the house and contents valued about $5,000 with no insurance. The ranch is owned by Mrs. L. P. Brown.
Mark H. Shank a 43 year old former Ohio magistrate was executed in the electric chair at Tucker Prison Farm Arkansas for poisoning Mr and Mrs Alvin Colley and two Colley children in Saline County Arkansas in August 1933 His reputed confession tied the Colley case to alleged blackmail in Ohio.
Austin reports the Texas House concurred in a conference committee report sending to Governor Alf Landon relief bond bills totaling three and a half million dollars with a reallocation of one and a half million dollars from existing bonds. The action follows Senate adoption of the measure.
W. Lee Moore, 76, Wichita Falls lumberman and high ranking Mason, died at his home. A Knight Templar, a Shriner and past master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, he came to Wichita Falls in 1884.
The Del Rio area and vicinity see cloudy skies with chances of occasional rain tonight and again Saturday. Temperatures were 66 high yesterday and 51 low, with a 55 degree low this morning.
