Senator William E. Borah, long critical of legislation, now pushes a bill to bar members of Congress from practicing law for interstate commerce interests. The measure would impose a $10,000 fine, five years imprisonment, and loss of federal office rights for violators. A committee poll signals possible vote soon.
The City Council tabled the petition for a city manager form of government in a session prior to elections. An estimated 2,000 qualified voters were discussed, with 140 signatures found on the petition. Bond and tax matters were handled, and names for mayor and commissioners were listed for the ballots. Voting will occur at city hall and San Felipe with appointed election officials.
Axel G. Anderson, 53, a machinist, stabbed his 19 year old daughter and 15 year old son through the hearts, then killed himself with a shotgun. Deputy coroner Dr. J R Sharp called it a double slaying and suicide. No note found. Neighbors said he had been unemployed and despondent, but recently found work at Oil Well Supply Co.
Milton Wiley, a Llano sheep raiser, suffered heavy losses when dogs killed 19 head of his sheep and 35 were badly injured in the attack on March 7.
Dr. Geo W Cox was named president and Roy M Andrews secretary of the Rotary Club for his fifth term at the annual election during the lunch meeting in Roswell Wednesday. John Loomis was elected director. Retiring officers are Dr J A McDonald and O R Weinert.
After years of service as commissioner and six years as mayor, Jnc Y Long announced Wednesday his decision to run again. He cites completed water system upgrades San Felipe integration and street improvements while noting reduced city indebtedness despite slow tax payments.
Federal authorities join the search for John Dillinger who has eluded capture for five days after escaping custody. He is accused of transporting a stolen car across state lines under the Dyer Act and was rumored to be involved with recent Sioux Falls bank robbers.
TARLAND Scotland March 17 John Campbell Hamilton Gordon 87 first Marquis of Aberdeen and former governor general of Canada and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland died today. He served nearly six decades in public life holding high offices including Lord Lieutenant of Ireland twice and high commissioner of the Church of Scotland twice. Born August 3 1847 he was not in direct line for the earldom which began in 1682. He married Hon Isabel Majoribanks in 1877 and had two sons and a daughter.
The Del Rio Independent School District board ordered collection of delinquent personal taxes with authority for the school attorney to seize and sell automobiles if needed. Tom Miller was named election manager for the April 7 vote while census trustee Mrs. Clarence Herreford will compile the district tally.
A Croydon man, George H. Payton, reportedly shot his wife on her birthday, prompting investigation into the alleged domestic violence incident and sparking questions about motive and safety.
Directors of Montgomery Ward & Co. voted a 1.75 per share dividend on Class A stock payable April 2 to holders of record March 17. The payout covers the first quarter of 1933 and follows a prior suspension of accumulations for 1932.
In Chicago on March 7 1930 Dr Alice Wynekoop is convicted of slaying her daughter in law Rheta. The jury imposed 25 years. Arguments for a new trial are set for March 24 with a possible appeal to higher courts if denied.
Administration proposes a ten percent reduction in code working hours with exemptions for noncompliant cases. Hugh Johnson announces the measure while George Sloan notes some industries could reduce more but warns against a flat rule that would mislead workers nationwide.
Fort Worth March 7 Leo Dutch Meyer was named head football and basketball coach at Texas Christian University while Raymond Bear Wolf was named athletic director and baseball coach.
One man Garner was killed and another, A. J. Pratt of Refugio, badly hurt when their car struck a concrete culvert on the Corpus Christi highway about two miles east of Sinton. Pratt was taken to Taft Hospital and Garner's body was taken to Taft.
A blizzard blinded the airliner’s wings with ice and caused the St. Louis Chicago flight to crash in Petersburg TL. Four people died, including Hugh Sexton aviation editor of the Chicago Tribune. All victims likely died instantly. The pilot cut the switch to prevent a fire as the plane nosed into a snowbank.
Mrs Minnie Hallford Burton 58 died Tuesday at 6 30 p m at her East Martin Street home after a four year illness. Born in 1876 in Travis County she grew up in Comanche County and married L D Burton in 1896. She leaves a husband five children, one sister and four brothers. Funeral services were held in Del Rio with several relatives present.
Three women pleaded guilty to illegal voting in the November 1932 general election and received suspended two year sentences in 63rd District Court at Brackettville. Named respondents are Anita Zuniga Pressley Catalina Mariscal and Thelma Bowlegs.
Del Rio Volunteer Fire Department will stage the annual Frontier Day celebration on April 5 6 7 with a parade opening the event. Chief Harry Arfman said nearly every Main Street business will enter a float or entry.
A masked young white man in coveralls robbed the Citizens' State Bank of Hitchcock cashier, fled in a speeding coupe, and escaped with 300 dollars today.
Three of five escapees were wounded by guards in a bold dawn breakout bid at the State Penitentiary. Charley Frazier Pete Finch and Edward McArthur were seriously wounded. Roy Thornton and Robert Hill remained in solitary confinement after the failed attempt.
Dillard Douquet, 15, is in city jail charged with petty theft after allegedly stealing a shaving kit and other items from R. H. Rogers. Rogers, a local teacher, gave the hitchhiker a ride from Sonora to Del Rio with his animal husbandry class aboard. Patrolman J. R. Bradley arrested Douquet when he tried to sell the kit to Rogers. The incident occurred while Rogers and his class were en route from San Angelo, and Chief Cole Blackwell provided the account.
Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald told the House of Commons that Britain would not transfer the British West Indies or any other territory to the United States in payment of war debts. The pledge was met with loud cheers in the chamber.
Ector County leads a regional coyote poisoning drive from Midland to the New Mexico line. Commissioners in Ector County have recruited Ward Reeves Crane and Winkler counties while Ector Andrews Midland and Martin have ordered poisoned baits already.
