Nina McCutchen Wheat of San Antonio a direct descendant of Daniel Boone died February 22 in Fentress. She traced her lineage to Jemima Boone and John Calaway and was born at Prairie Lea later basing her life in San Antonio for 17 years. Her great grandparents John Wesley Bryan and his wife settled in Paris Texas and built the town’s first flour mill amid early frontier moves.
Mrs Wilma Gould sues Edward Gould and family for 500000 claiming former pants presser and con artist known as Prince Mike Romanoff plotted to drug her and frame her in a misconduct episode to enable a divorce by her wealthy husband.
Dallas March 4 The Federal government will take strict steps to curb witness intimidation and jury tampering as W F Cato of Garza County and three co defendants are set for trial May 20 in Lubbock for the machine gun slaying of a government narcotic agent at Post on Feb 7 United States district attorney Clyde O Eastus announced that a federal grand jury will sit in Lubbock during the murder trial to deter any improper conduct.
Washington March 4 new trouble for the administration over the 4.88 billion dollar work relief bill surfaced as Senator Byrd Virginia pressed a resolution demanding the treasury provide the Senate with a list of public works projects funded but impounded for other uses. The move calls for a full accounting of the PWA balance.
Final registration figures for the Spring semester at Texas Technological College show 2,200 students enrolled, the highest Spring total on record. The total number of individuals registered for one or both semesters is 2,663, 137 more than last Spring. Fall enrollment this year reached 2,431.
Dalhart March 4 More than 67000 dollars in corn hog checks were received by Dallam County contract signers covering virtually all of the second 1934 installment. The payment equals the entire 1934 corn payment and all but two dollars per head on hogs, with the final head payment expected soon. The county 1934 corn hog allotment stands at 187000 dollars.
London March 4 authoritative British quarters stated Italy reached an agreement with Ethiopia on the neutral zone between Ethiopia and the Italian colonies of Somaliland and Eritrea.
Funeral services for Fayette Schwalbe 67 were held in Ozona. He helped found the Crockett County area and lived in Ozona after returning from Oklahoma in 1925. Born December 26, 1867 in Iola, he married Jennie Teague in 1893 and is survived by his widow and 13 children along with two brothers.
Oliver Wendell Holmes was reported somewhat weaker with the physicians noting the condition is not quite so favorable. The March 4 bulletin updates his health status while he remains in the care of medical staff in Washington.
Bulawayo Rhodesia reports Lady Young, missing since last Thursday on a flight over jungles, has been found alive. In Oklahoma City, Mrs. George A Waters, former warden of Granite State Reformatory, is cleared of cruelty charges by Senate investigators. In Fall River, Alyce Jane McHenry's inverted stomach and other misplaced organs were corrected in a two hour operation at Truesdale Hospital with a good outcome.
A new registration board, created by C. V. Bullen of Texas Technological College, lists 200 courses by required and elective groups and shows each course time. Students push a key to display hour and days while lights indicate overlapping offerings. assisted by Federal Emergency Relief Administration workers.
Arch Barnett, a highway department worker and nephew of J. R. Latham, sustained a compound fracture from shoulder to wrist and a broken left wrist in a Saturday night crash east of Brackettville. He was treated at Williams Sanitarium after being brought to Del Rio. He traveled with Dean Forth toward Cline when his left arm, hanging from the car window, was struck by a westbound truck. amputation was later deemed unnecessary.
District Court opened Monday morning in Brackettville for the regular March term. District Judge Brian Montague and District Attorney Julian La Crosse led proceedings along with court reporter Mrs Belle Sutherland who traveled to Brackettville for the session.
Borger, born from the 1926 Hutchinson County oil boom, marks its ninth birthday March 8 with a parade. A motorized artillery battery from Amarillo joins, along with the American Legion Auxiliary drum corps and the 40 and 8 train reenactment, while about 50 Sons of the American Legion boys participate.
In Athens on March 4 government forces moved infantry artillery and warships into Macedonia to oppose rebels who have swept ahead. Twenty two bombing planes launched to attack rebel ships as government air units claimed to have damaged the home of former Premier Venizelos, a revolution leader.
The State Livestock Sanitary Commission named 38 appointees including Hussie Galloway of Del Rio and L. J. Watts of Marfa as county supervisors and district cattle and sheep scabies inspectors. Galloway will serve Sanderson and Watts Marfa. several other appointments remain pending.
Judge W S Grubb in United States District Court nullified a sale contract between Alabama Power Company and the Tennessee Valley Authority and also annulled a contract with the Electric Farm and Home Authority, restraining Alabama Power from acting as EHPA agent in selling electric appliances.
Rufus Benjamin Hyde aged 46 died Sunday at 12 20 a m in a local sanitarium after several days illness. Death was due to septicemia. He lived in Mountain View Oklahoma and managed a cotton gin there. A hearse took the body to Oklahoma City for burial with his wife and son Basil Hyde present.
Albert Moos suffered minor bruises when his Del Rio Fast Freight truck skidded on muddy pavement and overturned in a ditch six miles west of Hondo at about 2 a.m. Monday. He was en route from San Antonio to Del Rio.
Dr Otto Strasser chief of the Black Front wages a relentless war against Adolf Hitler from his Prague refuge. Once a Hitler ally, Strasser branded him a betrayer of Germany and uses radio and other means to oppose the dictator.
In Washington on March 2 senators Connally of Texas and Thomas of Oklahoma traded compliments on the Senate floor while revisiting views on the gold dollar. Thomas recalled Connally's 1933 proposal to reduce gold content and warned Congress holds the power to revalue money, suggesting a possible reduction to about two thirds of the current gold content.
A tornado struck Forney Kaufman County early today causing at least one fatality and several injuries. Damage in Forney exceeds $100,000 as seven large buildings were wrecked and about 100 homes damaged or demolished. communications lines were disrupted.
A March 4.7 incident report notes two colored children killed and Mrs. B. G. Edwards injured, with the only other casualty. Two cotton warehouses were destroyed, the depot unroofed, and several store buildings and hay barns badly damaged. Northward at Rockwall the storm damaged two drug stores and many unroofed barns and outbuildings. no injuries reported.
A St. Paul report notes two governmental agencies estimate about 20,900 Minnesota farmers starving a quarter million head of cattle in a hungry strike against federal relief rules. Farmers from drought–stricken communities told a legislative committee last week tens of thousands of cattle face death without immediate legislative aid.
Iiicencio Cervantes of 103 Garza Street in San Felipe reported a fire in his ceiling and called the Del Rio Fire Department at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, but no blaze appeared and firefighters found no fire.
Stanton reports the county seat town with about 1200 people has no attorney after Bob Hamilton, former district attorney, left for Midland. The farming area and rich lands surround the town, seen as an opportunity for a new lawyer to step in.
