Tokyo March 3 4 The seven highest ranking generals of the Japanese army today sought permission to resign from the Supreme War Council claiming indirect responsibility for rebellion and assassinations. The government withdrew the first fleet from Tokyo Bay indicating further disorders in the capital were unlikely.
Local residents Mr and Mrs T P Cook and sons Charles Billy and Bobby observed final prep at Gonzalez post office for the issuance of 1,000,000 Centennial stamps. Mrs L P Shawen secretary to Robert F Fellers invited the family to visit before her Washington return. Fellers and Shawen led Del Rio postal staff in final preparations and first issue orders while Raul Anderson oversaw canceling for stamp collectors worldwide.
Mayor Thos M Johnson issued a proclamation urging Del Rio residents to join the yard and garden contest sponsored by the Del Rio Garden Club and the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce. The move aims to beautify the city for Centennial visitors and boost real estate values while potentially earning a West Texas Chamber of Commerce trophy. Applications will be available soon with divided contest divisions for fair judging.
Petitions of Chas N Daniel and Frank Walton for city commissioners were filed with city clerk E F Howard on Tuesday morning, the last day to file. Also filed were petitions for mayor candidate Dr Thomas M Johnson and commissioners H Mike Averill Otto Koog and Edward LeRoy.
Miss Justine Smykal 33 sister of Mrs F J Pingenot died Tuesday at her sister’s Del Rio home after influenza and complications. Rosary at Doran Chapel Tuesday 7:30 pm. Body to Yoakum for Friday 9:30 am funeral. Born Hallesville June 19 1902 daughter of Mr and Mrs L W Smykal. Survived by parents three sisters two brothers and two nieces. Catholic Daughters to attend Rosary.
Anxiety rose in Peiping as 21 American and Canadian missionaries were reported missing in Shansi during the Chinese Communist invasion sweep. Contact with the group has been lost since Saturday as the army mobilizes provisions to stem the southwest advance.
Ruth R. McNamara of Chicago filed a petition as a Democratic candidate for United States senator from Illinois. She says her background in investment finance since 1930 and restructuring several businesses qualifies her for the Senate despite no prior political office.
Postmaster Raymond Ross announced that civil service exams for junior and senior stenographers and for junior and senior typists will be held in Eagle Pass after March 16. Applications are available at the Del Rio post office with forms due by March 16 and on file in New Orleans.
Ghouls looted the grave of Mrs. Rachal Jane McGaffey in Ridge Cemetery near Sabine Pass seeking gold and gems said to be buried with her. Relatives found dismembered bone fragments. loot status unknown. McGaffey belonged to a pioneer family. cemetery predates the Sabine Pass battle on a wooded ridge near the battlefield celebrated in the centennial.
Dr. T. O. Booth, chief veterinarian of the State Livestock Sanitary Commission, announced Texas is officially free of tubercular cattle after seven years of work by the commission and the United States Bureau of Animal Industry.
In West Texas large mohair accumulations remain unsold despite offers of 55 and 65 cents a pound. Buyers including Duwain and Jack Hughes and Johnne Williams purchased hundreds of thousands of pounds from Menard Del Rio regions at that price. Producers Wool and Mohair Co reports no sales at 55 65 cents yet expect 57 67 cent gains.
Five hundred veterans in the Texas prison system were visited by George C. Betts of Austin to accept applications for adjusted compensation certificates. Betts said the payments will average about $500 per man as the bonus is disbursed within the prison system at Huntsville.
The Agriculture Department reports 1935 U S wool production at 429.145 million pounds with 63.145 million dollars from shorn wool and 66.0006 million pulled. Sheep shorn numbered about 45.451 million, down from 46.575 million in 1934 and near the five year average.
Weather in Del Rio and vicinity remains generally fair tonight and Wednesday with a slight warming trend. Yesterday's high reached 63 and the low 57 with this morning's low at 53.
A regional weather brief says temperatures will rise tonight with warmer conditions for most areas except the Panhandle. Forecasters warn of cooler pockets in the far west and northwest.
