Congress pushes for larger appropriations as election pressure grows. Roosevelt hints at vetoes on major bonus or greenback bills, while administration works to keep CWA plans flexible. A code dispute and shipyard hours saga underscore tensions in Washington’s spending climate.
On Thursday afternoon at City Hall the deadline of March 1 was fixed for filing candidates. The mayoral slate includes Jno Y Long and Dr T M Johnson while the commissioners race lists Paul J Pong Otto Koog and H Mike Averill. Pong gathered 89 signatures to meet the entry threshold of 76 and files as the city closes.
Val Verde County will apportion its 160 CWA workers among city county and school projects. City get 50 percent 80 workers for parks and streets. County roads and court house square beautification and Loop Road work are planned. Schools yards in Del Rio and San Felipe districts graded leveled sodded with 40 workers. Night school adults in San Felipe run Mon to Fri 6 30 to 9 30 p m with six teachers and a principal.
The article recalls the banking crisis a year earlier when Texas banks were ordered closed for five days by Governor Miriam A. Ferguson. A carload of 30000 pounds of pork arrives in Del Rio for redistribution to Terrell Kinney Edwards Maverick and Val Verde Counties. Val Verde gets 17000 pounds. Officials say the relief park from the Federal Emergency Relief Administration distributes according to family quotas.
John Taylor of Liverpool England a 51 year old fireman aboard the British steamship Wanderer was fatally injured when struck by an automobile while walking near the ship channel. The car was driven by another sailor who said the accident was unavoidable.
Paul J. Poag, Del Rio theatre owner and 15 year resident, announced his run for commissioner. He runs as an independent, citing demand from the people. Poag has led civic groups including the Rotary Club and participates in the Chamber of Commerce.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to revive the Hawes Cutting bill with an amendment for base relinquishment on independence and for final settlement of naval bases. The measure set independence within about a dozen years but lapsed after the Philippine government rejected it. The President urged timely, just transition and avoided undue haste.
In Mexico City March 2 the Petroleum Company of Mexico, a government supported venture to end foreign competition, opens for sale. Twenty million pesos in shares will be offered with 45 percent to the government and the rest to Mexican citizens. The firm will control government oil reserves and seek lower prices on petroleum products.
Madrid March 2 President Zamora announced former Premier Lerroux will form a new government to replace the resigning cabinet.
About 40 sheep died from pneumonia in a flock of several hundred belonging to Will Hill and C. D. Wallace at Kyle. County agent Jack Williams was summoned and confirmed pneumonia as the cause of death.
Dr. Alice Wynekoop testified in her second murder trial for Rheta Wynekoop. She described Rheta as reticent but morbid last Fall, and she was carried to the stand by bailiffs as she began testimony. The court recessed when she fainted.
Ten men and two women escaped from the Denton County jail early today. Five were recaptured in a barn west of Denton hours later. The girls Evelyn Bartee, 17, and Audell, 16, used a locksmithing break in their cell to seize keys and free others.
The federal trade commission disclosed to the Senate that about 900 companies paid yearly salaries and bonuses ranging from $10,000 to over $1.5 million during 1928 to 1933. Notable figures include Eugene R. Grace at Bethlehem Steel, G W Hill of American Tobacco, Thomas J. Watson of IBM, Myron C. Taylor of US Steel, and F B Rentschler of United Aircraft. Salaries often stayed under $100,000 in 1929, with bonuses fluctuating and many cut by 1932.
March 2 lightning struck the Bunjes home causing considerable damage while the Ashley residence also endured damage. Charlie Bunjes and A G Ashley were named in the incident with the Bunjes property suffering the main impact.
President Roosevelt proposed legislation to authorize the executive to negotiate commercial agreements with foreign nations to modify duties and import restrictions. He cited a 70 percent drop in world trade since 1929 and noted other governments are expanding trade through reciprocal pacts. Democratic leaders voiced support amid expected partisan debate.
Officials of National Irrigation System No 6 announce the corner stone laying for the first building in the new agricultural city of Ariga I in New Mexican town. A Sunday barbecue will host Villa Acuna San Carlos and Jiminez officials as streets are laid out for future offices power plant and headquarters. Plans include a hydraulic power plant at Mira Valles and a water reservoir at Agrimqa 1 with uniform adobe or concrete plastered houses and hail resistant roofs.
Casmiro Hernandez announced he would not accept the office of tax assessor and collector for the San Felipe Independent School District. He cited nepotism law concerns due to his relation to board member Lupe Diaz and said acceptance would violate state restrictions.
