Port Arthur lawyer H Jernigan was jailed for contempt for refusing to defend Ramey Willers in a white woman assault case. The defendant, a black man accused of the crime, faced renewed threats of mob violence as authorities fear further unrest following the arrest.
Storms added today to the difficulties of the City of Chicago endurance aircraft as it rode out weather while the Hunter family aims for a sustained record. The craft logged a 454th hour in the air at 2 40 p m surpassing the previous 420 hour record. John and Kenneth Husiter, co pilots, vow to stay aloft until the plane threatens to fail.
In Nuevo Laredo across the Grande River a gun battle with Mexican liquor smugglers left three dead on the Mexican side and two more dying after being wounded. US Border Patrol officers exchanged fire as they chased suspects seen wading the river with sacks of liquor.
George W. McMullen, longtime Del Rio resident and Southern Pacific conductor, the city's first mayor after incorporation, visited on Sunday and Monday. Born near 60 last June 28, he will retire upon reaching pension age after 42 years with the railroad. He plans to continue on eight day runs until notified otherwise.
The Texas Federation of Federal Employes postpones its first annual convention, set for last week, now slated to meet in San Antonio in July 1924. William Haensier of San Antonio, secretary, reports Perry F. Young of Houston is president and R. C. McFarland of Laredo is vice president. Del Rio is expected to be represented.
Major B. E. Thomason of El Paso, candidate for Congress from the 6th district, will address voters in Del Rio at o oclock in the district courthouse court room. Attorney Brian Monagne to introduce him as he continues a regional speaking tour before heading to Sonora for railroad news. Voters are invited to attend the event.
Levi W Ward of Colorado Springs leads a title suit over 1430 4 acres in two tracts 997.50 and 493 acres with Ward heirs receiving land from H B Ward and property in possession of J E White under Moore. A separate suit against A W and Charles Dyer for 3875 86 in sales shows 2259 71 unpaid. A divorce filing records Francisco R Garcia and Helenes de Garcia.
Humberto Enquival of Uvalde remained in county jail Monday unable to furnish $300 bond after a liquor complaint hearing. Rangers and the Uvalde constable said the arrest followed a raid Saturday night at Enquival's house where 31 pints of beer and a 10 gallon keg with 6 gallons of mash were seized. Edmundo Gomez of Uvalde was released on $300 bond after a preliminary hearing for alleged violation of the national prohibition act.
The Cowboys crushed the Eagles 16 to 2 in a Saturday game as Harrington yielded 6 hits and 1 run in 27 innings before giving way. Saxon led with four hits while Olle, Melugin and Moos homered and Galloway, Crosby also contributed multiple hits. Sparks struck out 15 Eagles as Cowboys piled up 17 hits and eight runs over the two games.
Ulric Ross, Del Rio Rotary Club delegate, reports the international convention in Chicago attracted about 17 000 attendees. The Texas delegation of 259 Rotarians traveled by special train from Dallas. Representatives from 63 counties worldwide attended. The next convention will be in Vienna.
Robert Posey age 23 was killed when his car overturned on the Eagle Pass Carrizo Springs highway early Sunday. He worked for the Trinity Palm Conmvation Company building an irrigation project in Maverick County. Funeral services were held in Carrizo Springs and the body sent to San Antonio for interment. He is survived by his parents and four sisters.
A La Prensa dispatch from Matamoros reports 20 communists and two policemen were killed, nine communists injured, in clashes when the parade attempted without an official permit. The confrontation occurred in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico City.
Federal agents report gunmen overwhelmed guards at a Chicago government warehouse and seized a liquor stock valued in the thousands, with initial estimates suggesting most of an $86,000 supply may have been taken.
A San Felipe couple remained in county jail after pleading guilty Monday morning to vagrancy. They could not post fines and costs of 12.70 dollars each. Arrests were made Sunday night.
The body of 29 year old Juan Pacheco drowned in the Rio Grande while swimming a quarter mile below the international bridge was recovered early Sunday. He worked as a saxophone player at Mrs Crosbys cafe. Burial was in Villa Acuna with the body transported from the river bank to the cemetery.
