Washington reports Waco selected as the site for a new veterans hospital with strong local support and opposition from Texas leaders. The hospital would include capacity for a substantial patient load and a structure planned to resemble a civic center with executive amenities.
June 26 dispatch reports Huntsville prison warden Bp. F. Harrell resigns after 18 months in office. He says he quit to avoid being fired and cites not knowing enough about the business. Assistant Warden Bangha acts in his stead.
District merchants plan a banquet and roundtable discussion led by secretary Mrs J T Laustlin with John Rowland newly reelected Poceden chairing a new board of directors. The note mentions timing before Saturday and potential scheduling concerns.
A Memphis plant adds modern devices including an automatic tube tester that uses a water bath with a steel frame lowered by lever to submerge tubes. The tester, linked to a 400 psi water feed and electric motors, speeds inspection. other new gear includes a greasing machine and an electric vacuum cleaner. Bart Mischler a rural postman in Sandusky Ohio reports fear after finding a snake in a mailbox on his route. He says chills ran up his back as he reached in and felt the slick scales of the reptile.
Fire on the top floor of a four building section in Toledo swept flames through combustible braiding materials. Firefighters carried chemicals up 24 flights of stairs to battle the blaze, marking the highest fire in the city’s history.
Athens Georgia offers a $50 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible for shooting out traffic lights at a street intersection. The city council posted the money to deter the habit from forming.
The Del Rio Refining Company plant east of the city will restart Sunday after a three day shutdown to overhaul equipment. The shutdown began Thursday and is the first extended closure since operations started. The entire plant will be painted aluminum to match nearby hills, a 30 day job. Runs will be sped up to catch up for lost time, per T R Cowell vice president of the company.
In San Antonio on June 26, 66 year old Thomas Donovan was shot to death as he left his home for a store tobacco. His son-in-law Joe Escobar surrendered to police shortly after the shooting, and Donovan was shot three times with a .45 caliber pistol.
Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd led a party of explorers and relatives into Union Station Washington where several thousand cheered the polar explorer on arrival from New York. President Hoover planned to receive the group at the White House later today.
Armando Santa Cruz Jr a Del Rio based engineer in the Mexican section of the International Water Commission will visit Del Rio and San Carlos area next week for a survey of water potential from the San Carlos and nearby rivers. He will be guided by Jose Sanchez Mejorada engineer in charge of the San Carlos irrigation project and visit the Mexican consulate office in El Paso.
In Carrizo Springs on June 20 the Winter Garden Strawberry Association was formed to market a growing crop. About 40 farmers join, 300 acres signed for next year, with plans to contract 1.5 million plants and cultivate 6.5 million plants for the coming season.
The GIF Authority to operate under trackage rights over 61 miles from Greenville to Dallas was granted today by the Interstate Commerce Commission to the Louisiana Arkansas and Texas Railway. The approved plan assigns the entire freight traffic of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway between these points to the Cotton Belt for handling.
Local bargain hunters will find reduced coupon books at the Princess Theatre on Saturday only. R. and R. Theatre manager P. J. Pong announced the $2.75 in tickets books will sell for $1.75 at the box office, with proceeds limited to that day.

The Americas Legion baseball club of Austin will play two games against the Del Rio Cowboys in Del Rio at Cowboy Park. The matchup was arranged Friday after noon by Cowboy management official Ralph Sellers. Games set for 4 o clock Saturday and 2 30 Sunday with both teams described as fast and highly regarded in Central Texas baseball circles.
Construction begins at the West End Elementary School known as the Mexican school. Six rooms and an auditorium will be added to the existing two room structure funded with $22000 for erection and furnishings. About 75 men are at work, with other additions planned and the Central School razing and a new high school on that site.
July marks the start of operations by Goodrich Rubber Company salesmen in Del Rio for the Southwestern branch. Crores Stewart, San Antonio general manager, is in town auditing a new distribution station at Eagle Distributing Company Station No 1 as stock for the territory is shipped from the Del Rio warehouse.
In Tiffin Ohio Heidelberg College study shows female students outperforming male peers with scores of 181 to 147. The average college rating was 1.63, and senior girls led with a 2.12 rating.
Hoylake England June 20 Bobby Jones captured his third British Open golf title finishing with an aggregate 291. The victory adds to his early 20th century major wins and solidifies Jones as a dominant figure in golf during this period.
In Lamesa Texas the widow of W. R. Billingsley testifies in the murder trial of Ire McKee. Billingsley, a Spartanburg merchant, was shot while trying to stop a Milind station holdup. She recounts hearing four shots and seeing her husband in the road near the robbers.
The stage was set in Huntsville for Sterling's gubernatorial campaign debut. Sterling's headquarters predicted about 60 voters would gather to hear the candidate's first address.
The Del Rio Chamber of Commerce president and secretary with ten delegates attend the United States Good Roads Association eighteenth annual convention in Oklahoma City July 7 19. JA Rountree director general says goals include raising federal aid to 20 909 009 annually adopting a nationwide highway system and government assuming all federal aid projects.
James Lone and Mrs. Long depart Del Rio for Port Arthur where Dr. Lone is named company physician for Gulf Refining. Hector Long previously worked with H. B. Ross in town. The physician led the Val Verde County post of the American Legion.
June 20 Austin United Press reports late Senator Pink L Parrish of Lubbock will withdraw from the governor race and endorse Clint Small. Parrish cited reasons in a forthcoming statement, and his move follows Lynch Davidson’s earlier retirement from the contest.
A man arrested in Philadelphia is described as resembling New York murder suspect known as the maniac killer. He gave the name Joseph Clarke and claimed to have escaped a state hospital on Long Island. Police note the resemblance to two New York killings but believe he may not be the wanted man. Clarke fought officers before being subdued and was ordered sent to New York for holding as a suspect.
National Wool Marketing Corporation of Wilmington, Delaware, operates wool marketing for Tess operatives with a foreign permit from the Secretary of State at Austin. It designates San Angelo Texas as its place of business under supervision of the Federal Farm Board. Draper and Company of Boston act as selling agents, with Texas headquarters in San Angelo. Capital stock is listed at $1,000,000.
