June 15 at Loyola University in Los Angeles awarded to Frank Murphy then high commissioner in the Philippines a doctor of laws. The degree was conferred during graduation ceremonies led by Rt. Rev. John J. Cantrel, bishop of Los Angeles and San Diego.
Franklin June 15 reports Joe Jones a 4 suspected Negro ex convict was held in safe keeping on a charge of criminally attacking a 13 year old Hearne girl. He narrowly escaped death during transport to the county jail as an attempt to free him failed. A sister of the girl tried to shoot him. Jones was secretly moved to an unnamed jail. He had previously served time for murder.
Dallas June 15 Dr J Shirley Sweeney former Dallas Public Health Society president says spring fever is at least 80 percent mental. He notes drowsiness and lethargy in hot weather but claims salt water boosts energy and that the lure of fishing and golf explains the sluggishness. Industry and steel mills use salt substitutes to curb thirst while outdoor temptations tempt workers away from exertion.
After a year of construction traffic resumed on the Losoya Street bridge on Highway 85 Monday morning. The bridge, once the main route to San Felipe and San Antonio, had been washed out by a flood and diverted traffic to alternative crossings. Unlike Canal Street’s earlier opening, the reopening was practically ceremony free.
Austin reports a sharp rise in private capital construction with a fall in public spending in May permits. Total May private permits reached $283,492 from $243,908 the year before, with 85 new building permits including $228,386 for residences. Public funds accounted for $95,700 of May activity. overall May permits totaled $379,272 versus $658,030 last year. Public dormitories at the University of Texas counted for about $400,000 of last year’s public construction.
John O. Douglas of Houston filed suit in Austin seeking a mandamus to compel certification of his name for attorney general. The Democratic executive committee refused to certify, ruling he did not meet filing requirements.

J. Edgar Hoover announced that Jesse J. Miller of Thurmont Maryland admitted drafting an extortion note to the wife of a Justice Department lawyer Mrs Stephen McKevett Parrand. He claimed Miller demanded five thousand dollars under threat to kill Parrand's son.
James Roosevelt, eldest son of the President, says he will not seek a Congressional seat from a Massachusetts district. He refused to comment on the report and stated his Boston activities are purely business.
Texas State Firemen and Fire Marshals Association delegates returned from Fort Worth after a productive convention. Chief F J Schmidt praised the attendance and noted a committee was formed to push local control over insurance rates. A memorial service honored 48 fallen firemen. Port Arthur will host the 1937 gathering.
In Abilene on June 15 Dr. G H Allen of the Federal Bureau of Animal Industry reported Bangs disease in 194 dairy cows tested in Taylor County. Of 1 532 cattle examined 63 of 594 first tests and 86 of 938 later tests showed infection.
In Runnels County the latest freeze caused fruit damage beyond early estimates. The Wilson orchard near Ballinger, previously yielding over 7000 bushels of peaches last year, may produce just over 100 bushels this season, according to owner Clarence Wilson.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton, famed English author and critic, died at Beaconsfield after a weeklong illness. He fell ill following a holiday in France and passed away aged 62 in Eng land.
