Gas service in Del Rio returned to normal at noon Friday after the San Felipe Creek bridge wrecking midnight Thursday severed the main. R H Hurd led repairs with Texas Gas Utilities men while one employee stayed on all night to answer calls and reconnect meters for customers.
Partly cloudy to cloudy conditions expected tonight and Sunday in Del Rio and surrounding area. Yesterday’s high reached 84 degrees with a low of 71, and this morning’s minimum was 74 degrees.
Only Highway No. 3 west of Del Rio remained open for traffic at noon Saturday. others including No. 3 east to San Antonio No. 30 to Sonora and San Angelo and No. 85 to Eagle Pass were closed by high water or damaged bridges. Officials said the Nueces bridge was badly damaged and may be impassable for some time, with one steel span reported missing. A temporary repair was planned for Sycamore Creek bridges to restore passage by Monday.
Railroad repairs on McKees bridges were sped by two extra crews and a second work train from Sanderson. Flood waters battered the Sycamore river approaches while the Nueces bridge owners report a total washout. Two spans remained on the Nueces Saturday morning but a floating house knocked them down, hindering traffic restoration.
Dr. John R. Brinkley and family including Johnnie Brinkley and Katherine Hocutt, with G A MacDonald, depart Sunday by plane for New York via St. Louis to board the Brinkley II yacht for an eastern coast cruise staying until September. The Brinkley Sanitarium remains open with regular staff. Dr H D Osborn and wife travel by auto to Marathon then train to El Paso to join the party in New York.
Judge Clarence Herreford reported extensive flood damage including a washed out bridge on the South Loop near the old Hope place and washouts on a county road to Lake Waik. He noted the Cienegas Creek bridge initially thought washed out was only damaged approaches, with repairs underway. A Middle Road to Villa Acuna is washed. the Booth Loop bridge near the Hope place must be replaced. another bridge on the Lake Walk road washed out requiring a day’s work. Labor must be requested from the relief office and project approvals filed in Austin before crews can operate.
The Rio Grande fell back to its banks by Saturday morning after cresting Friday afternoon. The river reached a height 10 feet below the 1932 flood level, with little damage to two Devil's River power dams where water spilled four feet over the powerhouse top. No damage to the steam plant. Del Rio residents visited Devil's River and the lower dam to view the torrent.
June 15 in Vernon Pi Aubrey Jordan 10 suffered serious injuries when a bale of cotton fell on him as he and companions played in a warehouse.
The Friday edition of The Del Rio Evening News sold 223 extra copies shortly after street release. Flood coverage highlighted damage from the San Felipe flood along with other heavy rain damage in the region and included standard state national and international news.
The State Highway Commission announced a $46,699 maintenance appropriation to cover flood damage and rising costs in Del Rio Division No. 22. Local officials said they had no notice of the appropriation as repair work occupies their attention.
Billie Lewis announced Saturday that he will accept Home Owners' Loan Corporation applications in his Foster Building offices. He urged homeowners in genuine danger of losing their homes to apply before the June 27 extension expiry, noting loans target those in temporary distress and not lender rescue. The program limits: home value up to 20 000 dollars and maximum loan of 14 000 dollars, or 80 percent of property value.
Severe washouts cut east and west power lines, but Del Rio received current from San Angelo within an hour. Central Power and Light Co. manager Sam Walk said the system remains in good shape and the steam plant at Devil's River was undamaged, with multiple transfer options to prevent further outages.
In Kirbyville Texas police said William Mahan suspected in the George Weyerhaeuser kidnapping escaped after a gun battle with officers near a CCC camp five miles east of town. The car was found with two men. one believed to be Mahan was in the driver's seat holding a pistol as night marshal H B Powell approached. The other occupant shouted a warning and fled, firing at officers.
Commissioner Otto Koog directs city crews on Saturday to rebuild approaches and repair damaged streets in San Felipe and Del Rio. The Academy Street low water bridge was reopened, Johnson Street bridge fills are under repair, and a new Canal Street bridge project will resume Monday.
In June 1544 a series of cloudbursts across Central and Southwest Texas caused record floods. Twelve people died with many missing as rivers rose and infrastructure failed. Del Rio saw four drownings and towns like Kenedy and Victoria reported vanishings. A 10 inch burst at Italy flooded Hog Creek and killed A. J. Mitchell and family. The Colorado River overflowed near Austin while Hillsboro suffered another eight inch flood. A Rotarian special to Mexico City was stranded at Laredo with Ambassador Josephus Daniels among the marooned.
In Springfield Tl a GOP grass roots convention selects Frank Lowden as keynote to steer farm policy and direction for the next campaign. Hoover visited Lowden at his Oregon home to discuss issues for the forthcoming race.
Denver attorney Ben B. Laska was found guilty on federal charges of taking ransom money as fees for defending Albert Bates, the kidnapper of Charles F. Urschel. A sealed verdict preceded the decision, with sentencing left to Judge Edgar S. Vaught. Immediately after, star defense witness Mrs. Molly O. Edison was arrested on perjury charges.
In Tacoma Washington on June 15 authorities announced that Mr and Mrs Harmon Waley will face a federal court trial over the kidnapping of George Weyerhaeuser. The development comes as part of a sequence of late news items from across the nation.
The San Felipe flood left 18 missing and four confirmed dead as relief workers recovered the bodies of Martin Torres and Ramon Flores. An unidentified elderly woman drowned, and residents feared more fatalities among wreckage. Red Cross officials planned arrival in Del Rio to aid about 200 homeless residents housed at San Felipe School No. One.
