The tax equalization board led by L. S. Block with Tom Frost and Wofe Pound continued protests on property assessments at police headquarters. Some reductions were made to balance the tax burden as the hearing extended beyond Thursday with one taxpayer admitted at a time.
Fort Worth dispatch reports the State Livestock Sanitary Commission requests 550000 to extend its eradication and disease control work. The board aims to fund tick eradication and prevention of scabies, infectious diseases, and prodary pests across eastern and southern counties, with a later briefing to the Board of Control before legislative submission.
Austin Callan, former Del Rio resident, elected secretary of the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce. Plans are underway for the third annual July Fourth celebration. The chamber protests Harris bill via telegrams to Hoover Garner Sheppard Warebach and 27 other groups including the Del Rio Chamber, urging protest to congressional representatives. The bill would limit Mexican immigration to about 1500 per year.
Lamb prices steady to 15 cents higher. Sheep receipts about 5,000. Medium to good yearlings sold $8.00 to $8.75. Cattle receipts 2,500 with calves 200 and holdover 1,118. Fed steers steady early. heavy calves bearish. stockers slow. Desirable steers $11.50 to $12. Hog receipts 9,500. top for 190-215 pound goods $10.20.
Senator Sheppard urged rapid action on liquor laws noting bootleg activities in cities. He pressed the committee to report favorably a bill making a single liquor buyer as guilty as a bootlegger, arguing liquor duties fuel lawlessness.
Concrete work accelerates at the old Central School site as footings are poured. A second mixer moves to the site to speed the process while laborers continue roof work and interior finishing. The west wing was demolished weeks ago and razing of the structure proceeds.
The Graf Zeppelin cruised along the western European coast avoiding storm areas and aimed to land at Seville around 6 pm local time. The weather remained clear along the route as it passed Cape Roca at 9 30 am.

A 99 year old will naming Mrs May Loud Koffink and Mrs William Loud reefer as heirs to one quarter of Emily Loud’s estate surfaces. Emily Loud died in New Haven in 1829, leaving a small cash fund in a New Haven bank now growing with interest to about 250000. The sum would have escheated to the state if unclaimed.
Lions Club added DD H Tucker and W C McDonald of Texas Gas Utilities to its membership at Thursday noon. George C Walters of Let Rio Refinery was introduced as a new member previously elected. Vocal solos by Mrs Ben Foster with Miss Louise Turner on piano and songs by James F Black, James F Black Jr, and Jack Paul entertained. The club voted to help entertain visiting Longhorns at a Hotel Roswell luncheon Saturday. Board meeting set for 8 pm Monday at Dr D A York’s office. June 5 Bishop James Cannon Jr a Protestant bishop withdrew as a voluntary witness before the Senate lobby committee saying the Senate would have to subpoena him for further questioning He charged the committee with singling out anti Smith Democrats and opposing Catholic influences as a preventable revolt The committee adjourned until Wednesday after the action in Washington.
A special train of 167 Al Manta Shriners from El Paso and Albuquerque passed through Del Rio on its way to Toronto for the annual convention. The nine coach train included a diner and an express car loaded with fruit candy and soda water. Notable travelers included Harry R. Van Heine Frank McCullough and H Emory Davis. A roundhouse whistle greeted the procession as it entered Del Rio.
El Paso reports cattlemen rushing cattle to the border ahead of a tariff bill with higher duties on Mexican stock. Two year old Mexican steers quoted as low as six cents a pound, prices vary by class. Southwestern cattlemen split on the tariff effect with some foreseeing higher native cattle values while others fear trade disruption. Demand for imports was light.
William Dagg er Pruitt sits on death row at the Texas State Penitentiary awaiting execution after a Dallas murder conviction. He eats a final breakfast calm but tense as his mother plans to visit before the electric chair. Warden Harrell notes the prisoner slept well and has an appetite for breakfast. The case follows three weeks of alleged terror in Dallas culminating in a high court affirmation of the sentence.
Lester Archer injured in a car crash last weekend was taken home to Sonora by his parents on Wednesday. Mrs. G Musey of Sanderson underwent a major operation at a local sanitarium Thursday morning and was reported as doing as well as could be expected.
The Department of Agriculture reports ranchers and herders now kill snails on wet western ranges to curb river and liver flukes harming sheep and cattle. Methods include copper sulfate treatments, draining marshy areas, and medical care for infested livestock.
A Ford tri motor plane from Boston airport plunged into Boston harbor after takeoff. Fourteen passengers were aboard. One passenger died and the others were taken to hospitals. The cabin flooded and a wing broken in the fall.
After three years of litigation O O Owens of Tulsa has been pardoned and fined $5,000 remitted for contempt of court by the governor following a United States Supreme Court reaffirmation of Oklahoma Supreme Court decisions. Owens figure in a long Oklahoma political battle and has been tied to Del Rio developments and oil interests in Val Verde and Pecos counties.
Sr. Jose A. Ojendis, collector of customs in Villa Acuna, visited Del Rio to arrange 3300 feet of asphalt paving on the principal street in Acuna, 18 feet wide, at about 2500 dollars. Papers were sent to Houston Surfacing Co. to handle the job. ten blocks from the guard house to the international bridge to be surfaced, similar to the Loop Road project.
Del Rio golfers invited to a 54 hole medal golf tournament at Alpine Country Club Saturday and Sunday. Players from Uvalde Abilene McCamey Texan Fort Stockton Pecos Sierra Blanca and El Paso join the field. Last year B C Graves Sul Ross College coach won. first 18 holes play Saturday afternoon.

Cramp or exhaustion pulled him under as he swam from the bank to a midstream boat. divers searched 30 minutes before recovery in a water hole with his face down.
Dallas police arrested three suspects linked to last Saturday's Grand Avenue Bank robbery. Loot totaled 11,023 dollars, with 1,060 found on one man. Two of the suspects reportedly have prior police records. All three were arrested in Fort Worth and brought to Dallas.

Veradero County taxpayers expect about 16 900 savings on 1930 taxes after a one cent cut announced by the commissioners court. Records show 128 000 collected previously at 91 cents per 100 dollars, with 14 093 000 assessed valuation. Developments under way may raise values, while the 80 cent rate for 1930 will be collected early next year. Historical rates show fluctuations from 75 to 95 cents in prior years.
A Black bandit robbed Papied State Bank of 4000 dollars in Baldwin Tennessee, fled into nearby woods, engaged a posse in a firefight, was wounded in the leg, and captured. A gunny sack held the loot and was abandoned but later recovered along the railroad tracks.
Mrs Myrtle Rhyne, 22, once Miss Texas in 1927, was granted a divorce that cleared her of bigamy charges. She testified that her first husband Clinton Rhyne deserted her at a wedding reception and that a later decree, used to remarry Bertram Bacon, was fake. She planned to marry Bacon again.
The West Texas District and County Attorneys Association, formed at a Ballinger meeting May 22, will meet in San Angelo on October 3 and 4. Alex Jung of Frederickeburg serves as vice president and Roy L. Hill of Ballinger is president.
