Sam Fells 43 of Detroit was killed in a collision 10 miles east of Eagle Pass on the Carrizo Springs highway. His widow, with a fractured leg and scalp wounds, rode the same eastbound train to Cincinnati. The crash also injured three Immigration Patrol members and others in the other car.
Del Rio and vicinity will have generally fair conditions tonight and Thursday. Yesterday’s high reached 100 degrees with a low of 75, and this morning’s minimum was 75. The Panhandle will be slightly warmer Thursday.
John Fiorenza is condemned to die in the electric chair after a speedy trial for the bathtub murder of Mrs. Nancy Titterton in New York. Fiorenza appears in a recent portrait as officials prepare the sentence.
Last rites were held for Charles William Moore 82 at Doran Funeral Chapel with J R Hackworth officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. Moore a retired well driller known for finding wells with a peach switch lived 25 years in Del Rio after coming from Sabinas. Survivors include daughter Mrs John Dobkins and several grandchildren and a sister.
Warm spell moved into the region with thermometers climbing to 100 degrees on Wednesday afternoon and several registers reaching 104. Little relief appeared until late Tuesday night as residents began to feel the first heat of the season.
Volunteer firemen will hold their regular drill at the Fire Station Wednesday night at 7 o'clock. Chief F. J. Schmidt said the drill will be made as interesting as possible and that the men are expected to come out to uphold the department's reputation.
William Alexander Varga 68 dies after two plowing mules bolt at his Carta Valley home. Funeral set Wednesday at 4 pm from Varga residence with Rev. Wilbur Wheeler of Eagle Lake officiating. Interment by Doran Funeral Home Del Rio. Varga born March 30 1868 in Texas married Susan Austin in 1902. He ran a ranch after years in Carta Valley mercantile business. Survived by nine children, two sisters and 18 grandchildren.
At Wellington June 3 the Labour party conference heard W Nash urge cooperation to make New Zealand the first effectively Socialist controlled state. Prime Minister Savage declared there will be an economic transformation and control of credit and currency already taken over. Delegates backed disarmament through the League of Nations and education about world peace through Socialist policies.
Michigan authorities expand a probe into the Black Legion after a suspected flogging incident near Norwall. Allen Bascom, fingerprinted in Jackson, Mich., is held on a $10,000 bond after demanding an examination. Justice Ernest J. Rogers acts as a one man grand jury in the Jackson investigation.
Health department bulletin shows mumps leading communicable diseases in Texas with 289 cases for the week ending May 23 followed by measles 216 and influenza 131. The report compares totals with the prior year and notes other illnesses including whooping cough scarlet fever tuberculosis and pneumonia.
Washington June 3. The Wagner Bill to authorize long term low cost housing program with local authorities was reported favorably to the Senate today by the Labor committee. Austin June 3. The Court of Criminal Appeals ruled constables and peace officers lacked authority under a truck overloading statute to compel operators to have their machines weighed.
Shanghai dispatches June 3 report South China armies advancing northward have captured cities along the Hunan frontier. Earlier Japanese sources claimed 250,000 Canton government troops moving in three directions toward Fukien and Kiangsi.
Philadelphia reports buyers largely inactive with purchases limited to immediate needs. Prices steady in domestic and primary markets. India and China firm with limited offerings. Weavers expect cautious buying, reducing stocks, with no clear change in overall price direction.
Mexico's illiteracy rate shapes a national drive under President Lazaro Cardenas. Officials cite 1934 crime histories showing many offenders cannot read or write while the education department expands schools and literacy centers nationwide and offers trophies to active groups and individuals.
Congress moved relief deficiency legislation toward conference after a bipartisan accord restricted what Senate amendments may be accepted. Sherman June 3 four prisoners escaped the new Grayson County Jail by lowering themselves four stories on a blanket rope. Roy Lovelady of McKinney Woodrow Webster of Corinth Jack Johnson of Sherman and Joe Morgan of Dallas were the escapees. They used a steel bar, slid through a ventilator shaft and reached the ground after greasing their bodies with soap.
Mrs William Leathem heard a loud bang on a shed behind her home and found a 35 pound steel ramrod like projectile had demolished her washing machine. Police learned the object was fired in a test by government inspectors from the steamship Cefalu moored on the Mississippi River.
LAREDO June 3. John A. Valls, first nominated for district attorney of the 49th judicial district 34 years ago, will be a candidate in the Democratic primaries July 25 to succeed himself for the 18th consecutive term. Valls’ first nomination was made in the same convention that named John N. Garner for his first term in Congress. He had announced last year he would not seek re election but yielded to pressure from supporters to run again.
