Washington June 2 Bishop James Cannon Jr of the Methodist Episcopal Church South refused to answer questions from the Senate labor committee about anti Smith activities during the 1928 presidential campaign. He warned of consequences and opened the issue of possible contempt proceedings. Senator Thomas Walsh chaired questions and pressed for replies.

Frank Bowman blamed his false teeth for miscommunications in court as he received a two year sentence for possessing counterfeit coins. He said the teeth kept dropping and hampered his ability to speak clearly to the judge.

Unseen assailant fired two bullets at Mrs Lottie Brenner Dechow wife of Henry Dechow in a Chicago home. Bullets shattered bedroom windows but did not strike the target, authorities reported.

Thirteen inmates at the State Reformatory for the Criminally Insane in Son ta Michigan escaped armed with razors and knives. The escape began after they seized superintendent Eugene Owen and unlocked cells to free 121 others. Tension rose in Ionia with homes locked and guns ready as the search continued.
One alleged member of the gang that robbed the Manelana State Bank was captured early today near Mancelona Michigan while trying to flee a swamp hideout. He surrendered without a fight after a pursuit that left two posse members shot. The gang included masked men and a negro chauffeur. about 500 dollars was taken.
