Dr. Walter Williams, long time journalist, educator and founder of Missouri University's school of journalism, died after a long illness in Columbia. He served as president of Missouri University until July 1 and helped pioneer the first college program dedicated to newspaper work. His career began in a Boonville printing room and included roles as editor, author, dean, and teacher.

Washington reports July 31 that price fixing was removed from the AAA amendment by House and Senate conferees agreement. Tomorrow will debate import quotas and other items. Roosevelt notes 58 of the richest Americans paid no federal tax in 1932 on 37 percent of their income. Noel Sargent calls the proposed graduated corporate income tax a violation of ability to pay.
The first carload of pipe for the San Felipe water system arrived in Del Rio on Tuesday evening. The shipment included 360 eighteen foot lengths of two inch cast iron pipe from Alabama, marking the start of trench digging for the system serving the Mexican suburb. City Commissioner H Mike Averill said six and eight inch pipes are due next, paving the way for construction work to begin.
Dr. Walter J. Bauer of Cleveland, 38, bridegroom of three weeks, was abducted by automobile to a wooded Chicago south side spot and mutilated until he died. He told police he was taken from Ann Arbor, Michigan. A suspect named by Bauer was a jealous man once linked to Mrs. Bauer.
About 140000 Texan employables on relief rolls are eligible for WPA work. Of them 115000 are men and 25000 women. Twenty district supervisors assist county admins to certify employables and transfer them to WPA rolls within a week, enabling deployment on projects funded by the $4.8 billion Works Progress Administration.
Frederick H. Gillett aged 83 former United States senator from Massachusetts and for six years Speaker of the House of Representatives died today in Springfield of leukemia.
True bills charge Mrs. Blanche Dunkel and Mrs. Evelyn Smith with the slaying of Lang in Chicago. Indictments filed today name both women as defendants in the fatal incident connected to the swamp kel's son-in-law case.
Austin officials announce abolition of county relief offices and creation of 38 district offices to oversee relief distribution. County boards remain advisory while funds move to district centers. Case workers stay local. clients keep access without traveling to districts. Transition will begin after tentative appointees meet this week.
State official Neal E. Guy announced that about 16 000 Texas youths aged 18 to 28 on relief rolls will be enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps by August 31. County administrators will review relief rolls and quotas while individuals should notify their local administrator if they wish to enroll. About 10 000 travelers will be sent to out of state camps as Texas camps reach capacity. Texas aims to have roughly 30 000 CCC participants by Aug 31 with 43 new camps bringing the total to 96.
George M. Snow testified in Wartburg Tennessee as a jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the killing of 16 year old Johnny Holt with a knife after Holt struck him with rocks. Snow, son of a farmer, was sentenced to five years in the state reformatory.
Ranchmen to Hold two day meeting August 6 and 7 at Experiment Station 14 between Sonora and Rocksprings. W H Cameron releases tentative program with talks by Dr F C Bishopp and others on blow fly control sheep diseases and mineral needs. Free barbecue, dancing, swimming, educational films, camping, and multiple ranchers and officials participation noted.
In Geneva Baron Aloisi said Italy would not discuss items beyond the arbitration issue with Ethiopia. England and France pressed for resumption of arbitration while Addis Ababa announced Emperor Haile Selassie would reject any form of League mandate and convene chiefs for a conference.
Washington July 31 UPI AAA announced a 15 percent cut in wheat acreage required of farmers who sign 1936 adjustment contracts. Chester C Davis said if the Supreme Court voids the AAA, the government would pay for compliance until a decision. Contracts likely within two to three weeks limit planting to 85 percent of 1930-32 base and not less than 54 percent of base for 1936.
Dr. William E. Hubbert, 50, was killed in his Dallas office by a woman who shot herself after declaring I killed him I shot him then decided to kill myself. Theta Burch, 35, was wounded seriously and both suffered heart shots. Patrolman J. F. Brawner responded to the scene.
Thirty new motor vehicles were registered in Val Verde County in July per Tax Assessor-Collector Lyle S. Almond. Of these, 21 were passenger cars, six pickups, and three trucks. Eleven passenger cars were sedans, six coaches, and four coupes. Twenty-five registrations belonged to Del Rio residents, with one each from Sanderson Langtry Carta Valley Comstock and Waco.
