Secretary Ickes cleared the way for the Lower Colorado River project in Texas by signing contracts with the Lower Colorado River Authority. He agreed to purchase $10,500,000 of revenue bonds and provide a $4,500,000 grant as Public Works Administrator for a total $20,000,000 project budget.
Harry L. Hopkins, works progress administrator, outlined plans to move relief men into private jobs and cut off dole for those refusing work. Officials said transferring as many as possible would be essential to end direct relief by November and support the $4 billion work fund targeting 3.5 million employed.
R H Bob Martin of the State Livestock Sanitary Commission says fever ticks on cattle in Brewster County are under control. Dipping vats are being built and should be ready within a week. The county remains quarantined but is expected to be cleared early as ticks are cleaned up.
Mrs. Thomas M. Johnson was summoned to Dallas Monday night due to the serious illness of her sister Mrs. Jack Webster Jr. who is not expected to recover.
Rafael Dominguez was sentenced to 10 years in the Saltillo penitentiary by District Judge Pedro Caballero Fuentes in Piedras Negras on Monday for the murder of L. C. Henry a U S customs officer shot in Del Rio last summer.
Albuquerque police re opened the disappearance of four Illinois tourists after a mystery woman with a New Mexico license, who obtained a permanent wave on May 27, matched partially with one missing person. The woman fled in a car and promised to return in two weeks but did not.
Ernest O. Thompson chairman of the Railroad Commission told a legislative investigating committee that unrest in the oil industry arose directly from rumors of a price cut from New York. He said Texas is nearly winning its fight to control oil resources.
Kalgan Inner Mongolia reports Dr. Herbert Mueller, a German newspaper man, kidnapped by bandits three weeks ago, reached Poachang northeast of here today, having been stripped naked during the ordeal.
Rafael Dominguez was sentenced to ten years in Salto for killing United States Customs Inspector L C Henry. Judge Pedro Caballero Fuentes handed down the verdict in Piedras Negras, with Dominguez to be transported to Saltillo this week. Accused of luring Henry into his car on Avenue C, Dominguez fired three times and fled. Co‑defendant statements tied Marcial Martinez, Villa Acuna former mayor, to the case as an alleged accessory, though he was released on bond.
Three indictments were returned Monday by the Sanderson grand jury. W J Ferguson served as foreman. M N Bobo was indicted for possession and transportation of 38 cases of whiskey. Harvey Anderson faced burglary charges and Ervin Anderson was indicted for misdemeanor theft. The grand jury recessed to August 12 for a further report.
W. J. McClanahan and his son have been arrested at Leesville Louisiana. They are held on charges from Texas ranger investigations begun earlier this year when Gov. Allred sent rangers to clean up San Augustine.
In Dunsmuir California Chief of Police F R Daw was shot dead and Traffic Officer George Malone wounded when two bandits opened fire in a daytime gun battle. Police chase underway.
A typhoon struck Foochow causing many injuries in the night. In Louisburg North Carolina a Black man named Sweat Ward was lynched after being seized from officers by a mob near Franklin County. Representative Nat Patton of Crockett vowed to purge insinuations of lobbying links to the administration utility bill amid Texas correspondence.
Park Board meets in Chamber of Commerce to authorize a new roof on the bathing house at Moore Park pool and to arrange continuous water flow. City pumper W. C. Churchwell to keep the hydraulic ram in operation to ensure a steady supply after debris clogged the San Felipe Creek intake. Park Board members include E. K. Pawcett, Geo. B E Love, E. F. Measels and Frank Schmidt.

Turin July 30 American author Richard Halliburton failed to descend on Italy as a modern Hannibal. His elephant was driven back to Paris by train after being nipped in the leg by a small dog. The dog lay dazed 40 feet away, toppled by the elephant's trunk toss.
About $13 335 will be paid to Del Rio and San Felipe Independent School Districts in the coming days as the last portion of the 16 50 scholastic apportionment for the two districts. Del Rio will receive about $6 615 for 1 890 scholars and San Felipe $6 720 for 1 920 scholars. State superintendent L C Woods announced the 1935 36 apportionment sets the maximum at $17 50 per scholar due to a surplus in the school fund.
Fort Worth authorities announced no 10 percent pay raise for firemen as the city cannot afford the $38,000 cost. City Manager George D. Fairtrace said the best outcome is a full two week paid vacation, after drastic cuts to reduce the overdraft in the general fund.
Five facsimile volumes of Mark Twain's Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc were sent to the Twain Museum in Hannibal Missouri by New York attorney Tres Sier Lark. The donation honors Twain and expands the museum's manuscript collection.
Two men attacked grocer Steve Snider with an ice pick in Waco on Monday then escaped with the safe. Snider was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
Washington July 30 Senator Tom Connally objects to cabinet and administration officials lecturing Congress. He denounces them as glorified hired men while the Senate rejects his 30 percent tariff revenue plan to aid surplus farm crops. He explains his amendments and four stated purposes for using the funds.
Representatives of national distillers told Texas repeal leaders no funds will be provided to fight the dry law. Local vets debated the move, with theories that Texas might vote wet or that distillers already benefit from legalized traffic and need no campaign spending. Dry forces press on while wets lag in Texas.

Evelyn Smith admitted to strangling Ervin Lang and dismembering his body after hours of questioning. Prosecutor Dougherty said she and her husband Harry Jung moved the body in a trunk to a swamp near Hammond Indiana. The torso was found in July and the confession followed her arrest in New York. She cited a promised $500 from Lang’s mother in law Blanche Dunkel as motive.
Student leaders in Mexico City charged that Tomas Garrido Canabal, former dictator of Tabasco, still held partial state control. Telegrams from Villa Hermosa claimed General Anero Calles failed to act to break Garrido's power after being named governor.
