Dr John R Brinkley aboard the yacht Brinkley II near Nantucket Lightship hooked a large whale late Tuesday afternoon. The whale fought for 21 hours as the crew exhausted by the battle finally cut loose the line. Previously, Brinkley had hooked the season's largest tuna while yachting in Canadian waters.
Valeriano Valdez Sr former mayor of Villa Acuna died Sunday at his home after a period of illness and a recent operation in a San Antonio hospital. He is survived by his widow and four sons, plus brothers and sisters including Pablo Valdez a former senator from Piedras Negras.

Edward Phillips a 13 year old boy was released from Val Verde County jail after Border Patrol held him for investigation since Sunday He was apprehended in San Angelo by immigration authorities brought to Del Rio for inquiry His stepfather Theodore Phillips said the boy was born in Milltown New Jersey on October 4 1922 and the mother is unknown The boy was placed in a New York orphanage at age 10 but later left Since he was born in the United States the Border Patrol released him without grounds for detention
