Southern Pacific officials announced drastic payroll cuts reducing eight men from the railroad's extra board after removing the night switch engine earlier in the week. The moves affect veterans and other workers, with business conditions and through trains from California cited as factors for the payroll reductions.
Immigration Border Patrol announces on August 1 twelve new men joining the force. Six will serve in the El Paso Rio sub district and Eagle Pass regions. Del Rio sub district strength rises to 11 with supervision by John F Ney. New hires came from a large list of eligibles, described as exceptionally capable and intelligent. Patrol reports provision of new automobiles and extra transport.
In Monterrey Nuevo Leon the National Revolutionary party and the Social Democratic party dispute the governor election results for Nuevo Leon and Monterrey. Each side cites different vote tallies for Francisco A Cardenas and Gen Anacleto Guerrero with reports of fatalities in election unrest. The Nuevo Leon legislature will canvass returns at its next session.
Richard Fitzmaurice aged 18 married a 18 year old girl in a dare after 48 hours of knowing each other. They wed without a ring and Fitzmaurice soon filed suit for annulment claiming a ring was required to make the marriage legal.
Del Rio golfer Bud McKinney set a 36 hole Brook Hollow course record with 72 and 68 140 strokes to lead a field of 25 in the National Amateur qualifiers at Dallas He bested rivals including Jack Dodd Byron Nelson and Gus Moreland by clear margins as seven Southwest players qualified for the national event.
In Austin on July 20 expert testimony challenged proration claims. Ben C. Bell chief geologist for Gulf Production Co. argued wells in East Texas are not all interrelated unless a single sand body underlies them.
Graf Zeppelin cruises swiftly over Arctic ice toward the North Pole with radio contacts confirming progress. A prior communication was established yesterday with Soviet ice-breaker Maylgin as the airship follows planned routes.
Mrs Anne Morrow Lindbergh tested their plane transmitter in New York today before resuming the trip with Colonel Lindbergh. He did not say if they would fly to North Haven Maine or Ottawa as their route after the storm forced a stop yesterday.
David Lee, described as negro, faced multiple penalties in City Court after pleading to speeding, contempt of court, failure to appear on time, and running a stop sign. Chief Henry Bridge had warned violators to heed summons before charging Lee with contempt of court.
Ambush during a raid on a moonshine still left Sheriff Walter Harris dead and three deputies wounded. A 19 year old witness, Joe Watson, said a white man with a criminal record fired the fatal shots from concealment in dense brush near a 100 gallon still. Authorities reported two cases of liquor seized as the raid halted further activity.
Two planes believed past Dublin at 10 a m Central Standard Time were in flight as part of world speed attempts. Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon Jr seek to beat a nine day record, while Russell Boardman and John Polando pursue a non stop to Turkey. Weather over the Atlantic and eastern Europe was reported good.
Dr and Mrs Brinkley escape injury in a plane crash as the Kansas political scene considers John R Brinkley running for the United States Senate and Mrs Brinkley for Congresswoman from the Fourth District. The report notes uncertainty about candidacies and references Brinkley’s independent bid last year and potential Senate seat pursuit.
In New York on July 29 gunmen fired from a car in an Italian tenement district killing five year old Michael Vengelli and wounding four other children. Michael Bevilacqua, four, is gravely wounded as the beer war follows Federal raids that shut two Manhattan breweries and cut supply to speakeasies. Police rounded up three gang members for questioning.
San Angelo notes at the 16th annual Sheep and Goat Raisers Association of Texas convention recall the 1876 arrival of John Arden’s first sheep in West Texas driven from California. Arden’s widow formed a partnership with Charles B. Metcalfe, fencing 20 000 acres known as the Arden ranch. The property later passed to Bird and Mertz, then Abe Mayer. Metcalfe introduced a second flock in 1878 on the XQZ ranch and remains active with son Penrose at the Dove Creek ranch. The era also includes W. L. Black at Fort McKavett in the 1880s and contemporaries like Joseph.
Chicago dispatch notes Al Capone faced a Federal Judge James H. Wilkerson who would announce his sentence within 24 hours. Capone pleaded guilty to an illicit liquor conspiracy and tax evasion, but a stay was granted to allow him to adjust his business affairs.

Mrs Ethel May Vaughn 37 died Tuesday in a local hospital. Funeral at First Presbyterian Church this afternoon with Rev B D Kennedy presiding. Burial in Masonic Cemetery by Eastern Star. Pallbearers M Nelson L S Dunning Lyle S Almond D E McDougale and J R Johnson. Survived by husband F H Vaughn two sons Holland and Phillip father G W Radcliffe and brother Verne L Radcliffe. Verne unable to attend due to his wife’s illness after an operation.
Colonel George T. Langhorne a senior U S cavalry officer will retire for age on July 31. Known for frontier service along the border and with Pershing’s punitive expedition into Mexico he commanded the Eighth Cavalry at Marfa and Port Bliss.
In Angelo July 29 the organization voted to move the annual meeting from summer to December or January and to alternate the sale between Del Rio and San Angelo. The second Tuesday in July remains for the sale, with 235 animals sold for five dollars each as packing interests participate.
Bond of 2000 set in Justice Miller's court for C L Morris and 1000 for his wife Mrs Morris in connection with the hold up of R L Newton on Tuesday night July 10. Preliminary hearing held Tuesday. Newton testified and the couple waived further action.
