The $4 million effort, largest in the Valley aside from the floodway, includes lining 136 miles of canal and laying underground pipes. District No. 2 covers Pharr San Juan and Alamo areas about 70 000 acres with 70 percent loan and 30 percent grant. Water comes from the Rio Grande and is fed to main canals and feeder lines via large pumping plants.
Edgar Measels the son of Mr and Mrs FE F Measels flew from San Antonio to Del Rio for a weekend visit and took several Del Rio friends for a flight Sunday afternoon after recently passing pilot license examinations in San Antonio.
A nine year old boy confessed to starting a blaze that leveled two city blocks and damaged two others, killing one firefighter and injuring nineteen. The act followed family instability as the boy’s mother was away and his father left recently. Francis Sullivan called the fire the most threatening in Lawrence history.

Huntsville July 28 James Earl Broussard Jr 29 died at the central prison farm hospital from wounds inflicted by fellow convict James Dovell Leonard who hacked him with a hoe on July 21 Dovel Leonard was shot and killed by a guard after the attack.
Chief Police Prosecutor Perry A. Frey announced Grev. F. W. Matland of Oklahoma approved a 30 day parole for Carston B. Chilton. Chilton, who walked from the Oklahoma penitentiary 23 years ago during a burglary sentence, was described by police as a respected citizen at his home.
Robert S. James, convicted of first degree murder in the snakebite drowning death of his seventh wife, had sentencing deferred to September 5 on a defense motion for a new trial based on alleged newly discovered evidence. Charles Hope, a former sailor who pleaded guilty to murder and testified against James, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
A July 28 incident in Olmos Park left auto salesman JW Brite dead from a temple wound after a collision with Mrs W R Hulls car. Mrs Hull and Roy Franklin aged 14 were wounded as Brite reportedly fired twice before a struggle led to his death. Hull said the men had been friends until a recent dispute.

Sale of cull fruit remains vital as much of the crop is unmarketable due to skin faults.
