Low turnout totaling 2056 votes left most county races decided by clear majorities. W A Hopkins led clerk race. Clarence Herreford reelected county judge. Grady Lowrey won Democratic chair. Geo E Love faces John Qualia in Precinct One run-off.
In Saturday's Democratic primary two commissioners ran unopposed and will move to the August runoff. Dee Harrison defeated I. E. Bode by 69 to 33 in Double Tanks and Vinegarone boxes, while John Qualia and Geo. E. Love head to runoff in Precinct One. George Richard Baker and Tom Brite won seats without opposition in Precinct Four and Precinct Three respectively.
In Hamilton Ohio a family of nine people including five children died when a train struck their auto at an unguarded crossing. A tenth family member escaped serious injury in one of Ohio’s worst such accidents in years.
Julian LaCrosse and Lyle Almond were among winning local candidates Saturday. LaCrosse was re elected district attorney without opposition and Almond captured the county tax collector and assessor post without opposition.
Chas L South of Coleman appears set for another term after winning the Democratic primary in Texas 21st district. He led Dr H F Miller of San Angelo districts with 1 316 to 374 in Val Verde and 31 946 to 11 779 district totals though counts were incomplete. South carried Coleman and Sterling counties, while Miller led nowhere for major wins in other areas.
Sheriff Lee Cook of Sanderson held his Terrell County post by about 74 votes over Eugene McSparren in unofficial returns from Saturday elections. County Judge G J Henshaw also won re election about two to one over R L Henry.
Annie L Hough county and district clerk widow of Sam Hough was defeated for re election. Miller 178 Taylor 124 Hough 114. Miller and Taylor advance to the runoff.
In Dossonville, population about 450, water pipes and fire plugs were installed months ago as a joke since no fire department existed. A group of young men formed a volunteer company, bringing a practical solution to protect the town.
Cheyenne Wyoming July 27 Jack Sellers of Del Rio tied his calf roping time in 15 seconds flat just five tenths of a second from the world record. He was among Frontier Days finalists as the best time stood at 145 seconds set in 1934 by Jake McLure of Lovington New Mexico.
Manila July 27 The steamship Isidoro Pons with a crew of 43 ran on rocks off Palauig Point Luzon. The ship’s wireless failed during an SOS and mariners say it was likely caught in a typhoon.
In Edwards County incomplete returns show J L Johnson ahead of Henderson for the Democratic nomina tion for county judge. With 122 votes uncounted Johnson has 516 to Henderson 383, Taylor leads for county and district clerk in Pad wards County with 347, Miller 242, Mrs Hough 205. Balentine trails Young 319 to 548 in sheriff race. Forwards county nomination goes to George B Terrell 356 with J B McDonald 151. Rep Chas L South leads in District H L Winfield 335 to Berkeley 276. Sixty three uncounted votes are in the Carta Valley box.
Herman Lehmann won the Maverick County sheriff nomination with 834 votes to Harry Robinsons 619. Ray Zuehl topped Weller Fitch for county judge with 916 to 495. George B. Terrell led Maverick County for agriculture nomination with 403 votes. J E McDonald 266, Day 108, Legust 104.
As results trickle in from 246 counties, Clyde L. Garrett leads Thomas L. Blanton for the 17th district congressional seat with 22,000 to 17,000 votes. Incumbent Blanton, longtime Abilene representative, faces a surprising deficit amid incomplete returns.
Judge John F. Sutton defeats Glenn R. Lewis for the 51st Judicial District Court bench by 1 235 votes Saturday with margins in all five counties led by Tom Green County where Sutton had 6 010 to 4 775 for Lewis. Sutton has served several years.
County Superintendent W F P Jourdan warns that Friday is the final day to transfer children between school districts. He notes many transfers already occurred but urges remaining students to complete the process before Friday to avoid being late.
