General Sartanino Cedillo, Mexico's agriculture secretary, and a corps of engineers visited Del Rio for a two day inspection of the national irrigation system at San Carlos and Palestina. They studied a proposed conservation dam near Villa Acuna with possible irrigation expansion if built. Cedillo, a cabinet member under President Cardenas, stressed nonpolitical aims and focus on local repatriate communities. He planned to travel to Brownsville on Wednesday evening by plane.
Terre Haute reports streetcars and buses moving workers to jobs as T. N. Taylor announces stamping mill union officials will ask their members to end the sympathy strike. He estimates most of the 22 000 strikers have complied with the request.
Burnet Texas July 24 Judge Lamar Thaxton denied a defense motion for a continuance in the H B Opp murder case. Opp a Menard County ranchman is charged with slaying Wiley Tomlinson last November 27. Trial moved from Menard County and a Temple hospital status of Fred Opp eyed witness prompted the request.
Onofre Lopez was found guilty of rape and seduction by a district court jury and sentenced to five years in prison. Trial opened Monday and evidence concluded Tuesday evening with the jury panel including Joe Bradford and E. Cofield among others.
The Texas Highway Commission and nine district engineers in San Antonio outlined a plan to pave all gaps in arterial highways from San Antonio to Corpus Christi and on to the Rio Grande Valley Del Rio and El Paso. The program aims to coordinate $75,000,000 in state federal WPA and municipal funds through 1936 to improve arterial routes nationwide.
President Roosevelt expressed opposition to allowing deductions on tax payments for contributions by corporations to charitable institutions. The remark came from Washington on July 24.

A gas drum explosion on a mechanical refrigerator destroyed the ranch home of Mr and Mrs John Carruthers Jr in Double Tanks country late Tuesday. Mr Carruthers suffered a severe hand burn and was taken to Del Rio for treatment. The fire damaged the garage area and most contents. loss estimated at about 5000 dollars with partial insurance.
A British source reports Premier Mussolini intends to deploy at least 500000 troops in the invasion of Ethiopia. The article notes preparations and the scale of Italy's military campaign as of July in London.
Heavy rains across Uvalde, Sabinal, and Frio river basins caused major floods with up to 7.67 inches in La Pryor, 15-foot Main Frio rise at Knippa, Seco Creek inundating D'Hanis, and 200 marooned at Garner State Park. Roads blocked, depots flooded, and widespread showers reported from San Antonio to Brackettville.
Farmers and ranchmen from 38 Texas counties, totaling about 22 280 farms, will convene at the Court House in San Angelo at 2 p m next Saturday to form conciliation committees. About 20 families left Val Verde County relief rolls in 10 days to pick cotton east toward Corpus Christi. Many others not on relief also went, with estimates of 30 to 45 more from Del Rio. Cotton pickers travel seasonally, starting southern Texas and moving north, often returning in fall. Vehicles, pets, and even a dog and gout tied to a car are seen on the highway as families head out.
The Red Cross said it recovered 30,000 bodies of people drowned in the floods along the Han and Yangtse rivers near Hankow. Reports from other areas indicate a far greater death toll.
From Brownsville, July 24, rebels encamped near Matamoros across the border as peasants press to oust Mayor Rafael Munguia G. and officials. Federal General Gabriel Cervera reports a peaceful situation while negotiators seek a compromise. Peasants warn they may seize city hall if demands are not met by 4 p.m.
Mexican Consul Machado Macias of Del Rio said the Matamoros uprising is a political move to force a state governor's resignation and should not spread to the Agrarian colonies at San Carlos and Palestina. He noted Palestina lies 18 miles and San Carlos 23 miles southeast of Villa Acuna inside a large irrigation system.
Postmaster Ray Ross plans to leave Wednesday afternoon for San Angelo to attend a Texas postal executives convention spanning Thursday through Saturday. H. C. Ressler of Kansas City and W. Bruce Luna of Dallas will participate, with efforts to host future events in Dallas and Chicago during the National Postmasters meeting. Ross will be accompanied by his wife and two children, and Mrs. Hart, her mother, will join them returning to San Angelo.
