An Anglina County farm youth named Pete Finley climbed 25 feet to dislodge a rope swing and dislocated a shoulder while reaching for the rope. Stranded by pain he could not descend until relatives rolled a wagon under the tree with bed springs and a mattress, then he jumped to the improvised net and was taken to Lufkin for medical care.
A bolt of lightning struck the outside aerial at a Colorado home in Carbondale July 24 and drove the foot of listener Frank Gross through a one inch hardwood floor. Doctors say he cannot walk for several months. The blast also killed a dog and badly damaged the interior, per witness Charles Souther.
The 9000 pound Indian bull elephant Wilbur at Marsalis Park Zoo in Dallas died after a night of attempting to break chains and escape. Keeper Walter Carlton was injured as Wilbur fought guards and police, then collapsed and died from exhaustion. The city trucked the carcass away, with the head to a taxidermist and the heart saved for study. Wilbur, brought to Dallas in 1922, cost 3500 dollars and required a municipal minstrel show to raise funds.
Vienna reports twelve hundred Socialists arrested in a suspected plot to overthrow the Dollfuss government. The mass roundup marks the largest political prison snap since February's civil war. Police say Socialists Communists and Nazis formed a united front funded by sources in Germany.
EB R Henson associate professor of farm crops at Iowa State College said drought severity is exaggerated across farm regions. While touring 10 states with 26 students, he projected Iowa corn near average and noted oats and barley losses were overstated. He predicted Iowa feeders may rise in Fall aided by U S corn hog checks. Nebraska yields viewed slightly below average.

About 2325 cattle shipped from Val Verde County under the drought relief program earned roughly $20 000 in checks distributed over the weekend. The cattle were bought by Drisdale and delivered to E S Block for care before shipment to San Antonio and Fort Worth for processing. Slaughtered stock totals near 700 head, with 30 percent culled on ranches. Kinney County data show 6159 head purchased and 1341 slaughtered, reflecting larger cattle numbers and faster operation in Brackettville. Del Rio houses the Val Verde office, covering vast terrain that slows shipments.
Republicans in the county will vote Saturday at Hillcrest Apartments in the general primaries. County chairman Judge C K McDowell announced only one ballot box and only one county candidate will be on the ballot. C W Earnest was drafted to run for county chairman after McDowell urged he not be re elected. A Thompson was appointed election judge with George M Adair assisting judge.

Secretary Wallace announced a 75 million dollar project to plant a forest shelter belt 100 miles wide from the Canadian border to Texas. President Roosevelt ordered 15 million in emergency funds, creating windbreaks across 1,000 miles through North and South Dakota Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma into the Texas Panhandle.
In Rumford Maine on July 24 George Barrows who transports mail with a wheelbarrow was required to obtain a state trucking license. The license costs $3 more than the vehicle’s value, highlighting a compliance burden for this mail carrier.

Four armed men held up the Oxford Bank in Kansas and fled with five hostages after a gun battle. One hostage Marion Carson and one bandit were wounded by vigilante shotgun fire as they entered a car, while Harold Littrell, 18, was shot in the abdomen during the escape. Hostages were released shortly after the robbery.
In Webb County Texas about one third of an estimated 120000 to 130000 cattle are to be sold to the federal government under emergency drought relief. Applications for sale blanks began July 14 at County Agent Newt W. Jones office and by July 17 more than 14000 head had been offered. Webb County cattlemen's advisory committee and an appraisers group were named July 13 and veterinarians from the U S Bureau of Animal Industry are awaited to begin purchases. Federal shipping pens on three railroads are being prepared to handle the cattle.
