Hugo Oklahoma July 23 Texas patrolmen turned over the bedside watch of Pete Traxler a wounded Southwestern desperado to Oklahoma officers as it becomes clear he will be tried in Oklahoma on a robbery with firearms charge carrying the death penalty Texas officials would permit Oklahoma to press charges rather than returning Traxler to Eastham prison farm where he escaped while serving a 99 year sentence for armed robbery.
ABILENE July 23. William E Hawkins associate justice of the Texas Supreme Court from 1912 to 1920 died in Abilene today. He previously served as state banking commissioner and assistant attorney general.
The La Follette Civil Liberties Committee accused Chicago police of excessive force in the Memorial Day clash near Republic Steel, where 10 demonstrators were killed and many injured. The panel found no incitement to violence and questioned police treatment of wounded captives.
Mrs. Adolphine Leville Barrios of Westwego La died yesterday. The notice lists 228 descendants connected to her family and heritage as reported from New Orleans on July 23.
Washington reports the congressional tax investigation committee will let any member inspect income returns of James Roosevelt and Secretary Morgenthau. In Austin Texas Gary of Texas is discussed as a potential successor to the late Pratt on the communications commission amid political contention surrounding a local case in Willacy County.
Franco forces pressed the siege around Madrid with heavy fighting west and east of the capital. In Villanueva de la Canada sector 15 miles west of Madrid peak 660 fell to insurgents for a third time while government troops held a weary front near Brunete, as Miaja warned of encirclement.
In Munich on July 23 the Nazi regime opened the Chamber of Horrors a propaganda art exhibit denouncing degenerate art. Mrs Leta Bonnet 95 died Friday morning at her Del Rio home after a brief illness. She had lived in Del Rio 49 years and was widow of Captain HD Bonnet who died 10 years ago at age 90. Born in Hamburg Germany on September 18 1841 she came to the United States as Lena Inselman and later married in San Antonio before moving to Del Rio. Funeral services were tentatively planned for Saturday afternoon with relatives expected from San Antonio Fort Worth and Borger. She leaves a niece Mrs J A Burger of San Antonio and several stepchildren grandchildren and great grandchildren. Two of her children died many years ago.
Local American Legion post will elect officers for the upcoming year at 7 30 pm in the Chamber of Commerce. Post commander Beadle urges full attendance as officers must be chosen at least 15 days before the department convention in San Angelo August 22 23 and 24. Delegates to the convention will also be chosen. Officers elected tonight will be installed at the first post meeting in October.
Julian Maza a longtime Del Rio High School janitor and veteran school employee died Friday morning at age about 55 in his San Felipe home after a one day illness. Flowers were gathered from grounds he tended as a tribute. Funeral services were held at his San Felipe home with burial in San Felipe cemetery.
Dorothy Frook, the Salvation Army's first woman attorney, announces her bid for New York City mayor on the Democratic ticket. Her candidacy signals a push for female leadership to address city messes and reforms.
Signals for the Texas Street crossing near the railroad are nearly complete. Southern Pacific Railroad and the State Highway Department supervised the project with material and labor supplied by the railroad. The electrically controlled units in concrete bases use bells and flashing lights to warn drivers as trains approach within 800 feet.
James Leckie admitted drinking at his stepfather’s by whiskey and asked for 20 days to sober up. Municipal Judge Harold B Alndreth granted 90 days saying the period should effect a complete cure. The case occurred in Los Angeles on July 2.

Detec tive Lieutenant Martin Cliffe and a raiding party surrounded a lodging house at dawn in St Louis and arrested Harry Campbell. He admitted identity and described walking away from Huntsville prison last February where he served 25 years for a 1932 Galveston bank robbery. Fingerprint check confirmed the name. he is not the Campbell from the Karpis gang.
