Former Del Rio Cowboys shortstop Bay Ater died after a blow to the head in a Pampa Road Runners vs Shawnee game. A Sudan household views 13 as lucky with H. J McCarty living there 13 years. The family includes 13 children and 13 grandchildren totaling 26 youngsters. Thirteen children have been born in the same house. Mrs McCarty had surgery last December 13.
OSSINING N Y July 23 Sixteen bodies lie in the morgue after a Sunday outing ended in tragedy when a motor bus with allegedly defective brakes plunged over a 30 foot embankment. Twelve died in flames as doors and windows jammed. twenty three passengers were hospitalized with two in critical condition.
Chief Harry Arfman’s completion of a fire fighting course at College Station enables Del Rio to keep the 31 cent key rate saved about $400 annually for residents. Delegates from 293 Texas cities attended the four day training school with 455 representatives. Arfman and Brackettville’s Donald Stallknecht joined the trip, covering ladder work tools drills pumper engineer instructor training salvage first aid knots fire marshal duties and fire prevention.
In Little America on July 23 grave concern arose for Rear Admiral Richard Byrd after a tractor party failed to locate the return trail to his weather observation post. The group, which began Friday to bring him back to base, reported they could not find the path.
Speakers at a Roswell hotel banquet praised the Texas State Highway Department for building an excellent statewide system. D. K. City delinquent personal taxes start this week with the separation from real estate rolls. City Clerk E F Howard indicated the work began Monday and will likely be completed soon, allowing rolls to be turned over to W T Dawson, the delinquent personal tax collector appointed at the latest City Commission session.

Chicago July 23 AP report states the Dillinger gang was leaderless as John Dillinger exited a neighborhood theatre and faced a burst of government gunfire. A stray bullet struck his neck in a brutal scene, leaving the crowd in a crushed heap as officers pursued the gang.
Eighteen of Val Verde County’s twenty CCC recruits departed Monday for Fort Clark at Brackettville to enlist. The group included Raul Hernandez and 17 others. they receive $30 monthly with $22 sent home. The Texas quota increased to remove more families from relief roles through enlistment in the civil corps.
Over age and underage exemptions plus total disability relief from poll tax rules are outlined. Eligible voters must be 21 by election day and meet residency needs. Exemption certificates require in person or agent signed orders. certificates mailed to applicants, not agents.

The July drought devastates Kansas City region with official estimates of crop losses reaching hundreds of millions across Missouri Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma and Arkansas. Nebraska reports 156 million dollars in damage. Missouri corn losses soar as oat yields plunge to ten percent of normal. Water shortages strain pastures and feed supplies as 30 percent of farmers haul water and livestock travel miles for water. A five state drought conference is set for Kansas City to coordinate relief efforts.
