The News subscription drive ends with Mrs McNutt taking first prize in the campaign song contest. Mrs Burk places second, Miss Stewart third, and Miss Thompson fourth as winners are announced by judges at the Del Rio Bank and Trust Company.
Arch Jenkins reports fair range in Kinney County with rain hoped for. Val Verde ranchers plan to attend the Ranch Experiment Station round-up and rodeo on August 6 with discussions on sheep and goats. The Sheep and Goat Raisers' Convention agenda lists US participants and possible future hosts including Brady and San Antonio. Dr. J E Butler of Dalles, visiting with G W Stephenson, notes Angora goats from registered breeders as best near Eastland and in the Hampton ranch area.
Three fires in Del Rio kept volunteers busy. A Brauer barn on Nicholson and Crimes Streets was destroyed by a 2:15 a m blaze blamed on spontaneous combustion, destroying 300 bales of new hay and threatening nearby homes. A Sparks truck near Parks residence was damaged by fire from a shorted battery. A mulch shed fire on East Martin Street caused by a tossed cigarette was reported.
Returns from the Federation committee show Miss Violet Miers leading with 5 567 votes and Miss Emma Fawcett rising to 2 064 for second place in the race for queen of the four teenth annual Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association convention. Other candidates include Julia Texie Boggess and Dorothy Smith, with 12 contenders listed as votes tallies shift and anticipation builds for tonight’s public appearance at the Princess Theater.
Midland police chief King Reid killed night watchman J. C. Holcombe in a gun battle said to be over a dog. Reid lay seriously wounded with little hope of recovery. In a spillover fight a Mexican killed three men and wounded others as several suspects were jailed.
Dizzy Dean pitched a strong Sunday afternoon at Cowboy Park holding the Cowboys to six hits and backing the Public Service Utilities to a 4 3 win. Barbee's eighth inning single scored Ward after a walk and Melugin's single setup the run. The series opener had Dean credited with the loss Saturday after relieving Marshall in the seventh.
Congressman Oscar De Priest called for a negro political party in a Chicago address in the so called black belt. He argued negroes must fight their own battles to gain recognition. The piece notes recent agitation and a White House tea involving De Priest’s wife sparking southern condemnations of social equality efforts.

In Bridgeport on July 22 John S. Fogarty of Fort Worth filed a $506000 suit for alienation and seduction against former heavyweight champion Gene Tunney. The plaintiff says the woman later filed a suit against Tunney. Tunney was reported to be in Italy with his bride. The Toledo Blade notes the remark Two can live as cheaply as one if both work.
About 1200 convicts seized the state prison in Danmenborn New York setting fire to a shop the power plant and walls were assaulted guards opened fire several killed and around twenty four score wounded according to afternoon reports
The Del Rio Evening News closes its subscription drive at 8 o clock Saturday night declaring a complete success. Mrs. S. E. Burk wins second prize and praises the fair conduct of the effort led by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nobitt. The News commends all contestants and notes broad community support.
T. L. Drisdale of Val Verde County predicts the Sheep and Goat Raisers Association convention in the area July 31 to August 2 will yield the largest stock exhibit in Texas livestock history. Hudspeth predicted House passage after budget committee review and noted Hawley tariff bill concerns on wool, mohair, rags, hides, and footwear while planning a fuller tariff push at the Sheep and Goat Raisers convention. He will remain in the area then return to Washington for a House-Senate tariff conference May/Oct timeline.
Cornell and Hobart Mannton, ages ten and nine, were brought to trial on murder charges for allegedly slaving Raymond Collay a six year old playmate. The body was found July thirteen in Dry Fork River. The boys had been jailed about a month while other prisoners complained of their noisy boyish pranks.
