Three men work under B. B. Freeborough, resident engineer in Val Verde County. W. O. F Pritze is office engineer, C. N. Parsons assistant engineer, and W. N. Blakeney assistant resident engineer. The office and drafting room occupy the third floor of the Val Verde County Courthouse.
Two men burned to death in a truck collision between Houston and Conroe were identified as J. C. Wakefield, 30, and Robert Wilson, 30, both of Milford Ellis County. M. A. Kornblatt was killed and Mrs. Mae Elmore of Houston was critically injured.
City of Del Rio declares July 21 1934 as State Highway Day to celebrate the new State Highway Department office and warehouse. Mayor Thomas M Johnson urges residents to welcome Austin officials and show appreciation for department efforts and benefits to the city.
Prominent Texas figures plan to attend the highway dedicatory ceremony in Del Rio. State Highway Commissioners D. K. Martin and W. R. Ely are joining, with possible attendance by Chairman John Wood. From San Antonio come A. W. Grant W. H. Furlong Percy Robertson Porter Whaley and J. D. Moffatt. Local chamber leaders expect attendees from Del Rio to Uvalde.
Funeral services for Chaplain C C Bateman retired will be held Saturday at 9 am in Fort Sam Houston Post Chapel San Antonio with Chaplain Ora J Cohee Chaplain George McMurray and Rev Roy Angell officiating Interment will be in the National Cemetery Bateman 77 died at his home on Army Boulevard Wednesday He served in three wars and was a long time Army Chaplain noted for his stories to Del Rio youngsters Surviving are his widow three daughters and seven grandchildren.
President Roosevelt heads to Hawaii and is expected to use a Honolulu radio address on July 28 to express a peace and goodwill policy for the Pacific. The trip may emphasize a broader extension of the good neighbor policy and an informal stance on world issues.
In New Braunfels on July 20 the Comal County highway beautification committee picked mountain laurel as the most typical shrub. Spanish oak and live oak were close seconds, with recommendations to plant both oaks. The committee plans sites near New Braunfels for rest and recreational stops beautified by these plantings.
Leader Harry Bridges drives San Francisco maritime union support as the Gibbs Street Division 22 office and warehouse near dedication showcase a modern fireproof two story office with advanced lighting heating and plumbing and a 127 by 61 foot warehouse funded by a $4 000 Public Works Administration grant with the rest from the State.

Ike Northcutt aged 50 and his one year old granddaughter died when his car sideswiped a truck on a bridge eleven miles east of Sweetwater. Four relatives were seriously injured including Mrs Northcutt and her two daughters Ruby and Eula, all in critical condition.
In the week ending July 14 West Texas saw only a few small wool transactions despite over 1,000,000 pounds consigned. Cash advances ranged from 14 to 29 cents per pound with the balance due on sale. Johnson sold about 33,000 pounds at 24 cents, while a large Del Rio sale was postponed.
Workers uncover an old mail coach trail once used by "Big Foot" Wallace north of the Earl Sellers ranch while widening Highway No. 3 near Devil's River bridge. The route ran from San Felipe Springs to Castle Canyon, Sheffield, Fort Stockton, Presidio, and possibly El Paso, with Wallace famed for a hats-and-boulders maneuver against attacking Indians.
Eldorado notes John H. McCormick aged 89, the county’s oldest Confederate veteran. Born 1845 in Marion district South Carolina he joined at 17 and served three years in Longstreet's corps. He recalls the Lee surrender at Appomattox courthouse on April 9 1865.
