Mrs J E Ely aged 77 mother of Mrs V D Curry of Del Rio died Thursday in Nelson Nebraska. Mr and Mrs Curry and their children V D Jr and Celia Jane left Thursday afternoon to drive to Nebraska to attend funeral services there.
Ed Meys condition worsened after a car crash that also injured his daughter and grandchildren. He was moved Thursday from his daughter's Fort Sam Houston home to the base hospital due to pleurisy and risk of pneumonia. His son and daughter in law went to San Antonio to be at his bedside while Meys daughter and grandchildren recover from their injuries.
Lonie Two Gun Alterie, a heavyweight Chicago gangster known for bootlegging wars, was shot as he left a hotel and died an hour later. Captain Daniel Gilbert attributed the slaying to labor trouble.
At Texas A and M College during the sixth annual Texas Firemen's Training School session, a specialized first aid course leading to an American Red Cross card is offered for firemen. Instructors from Fort Worth will teach, with Dr R N Muirhead from the American Red Cross guiding the course. Those with standard or bureau of mines cards are eligible for the instructors course while general firemen's students cannot enroll in the specialized program. The regular short course runs three sessions daily with three hour drills twice daily and ends with a written exam.
Late News from San Marcos reports a boarding house fire that destroyed the building. ten people were involved with four seriously injured, some leaping from windows or fleeing down a blazing staircase. The report is dated July 18.
Senator Borah of Idaho denounces the administration's plan to close courts to processing tax recovery suits. He argues the move helps big corporations that pass taxes to consumers while harming small firms unable to shift the burden.
Texas railroads petitioned the Railroad Commission for a general freight rate rise to parity with interstate charges. The Interstate Commerce Commission granted a 7 percent increase last April, exempting most agricultural and livestock products. Railroads argue they are in worse financial condition this year than last.
Carlos Martiarena of Del Rio, Mexico, indicted by a grand jury for false swearing and wife abandonment, is being returned to immigration. Del Rio officials, with New Mexico support, say he falsely claimed his son was born in the United States to obtain a birth certificate.

Rain began about 12 30 p m Thursday fulfilling H L Molyneux forecast from the U S weather service. Heavy showers reported from south of Sonora to near Del Rio with a 24 hour total of three inches in Double Tanks area. Traffic halted as rain filled draws Tuesday and Wednesday. Nearby towns Uvalde Brackettville Spofford and Eagle Pass had lighter showers with Devil's River area receiving two inches at Will Baker ranch. Sanderson reported no rainfall.
Van Lear Kentucky July 18 seven of nine miners entombed by a coal mine blast were recovered today. Some bodies crushed by slate and coal. John F Daniel Lexington head of the state mines department believes all nine were killed instantly by gas.
Brownsville July 18 Dr 5S K Hallam long active in the Lower Rio Grande Valley announces plans to establish Laguna Vista near Port Isabel. A water contract with Cameron County Water Improvement District No 5 provides supply for a 10 000 acre tract. A 63000 foot canal will connect El Jardin to Laguna Vista creating reservoirs and lakes for irrigation and town development.

Amador Cantu and Philips Vilevas, two young Mexican boys of Langtry, were paroled to their parents Thursday morning in District Court where they faced burglary charges. The boys were accused of breaking into the store of W. H. Dodd in Langtry. The hearing was held before Grady Lowrey, the special judge.
Dalhart residents plan a display of arrowheads spearheads and Indian relics soon. Porter Montgomery won first place in a similar show at Elkhart Kansas on July 4. Bill Baker of Boise City Oklahoma praisesMontgomery’s display of Folsom type points as among the best seen. Edward Roder of Perico nearby has 300 perfect arrowheads.
