Miss Maude Stevenson read For the Defense, and J Autrey Walker presented a Rotary pin to Past President Oscar Weinert. Walker was chosen as Del Rio’s representative to the 47th District Rotary International Assembly July 20 and 21 at Seguin.
Austin July 15 the Supreme Court agreed to review litigation on the legality of a pari mutuel certificate for dog racing. Two civil appeals courts had disagreed on the issue.
Elliott Roosevelt announces the birth of his son Elliott Jr in Fort Worth on July 15 1947. Telegrams between the parents and President and Mrs Roosevelt confirm the arrival. The newborn becomes the President’s seventh grandchild.
The Union Party backs Representative William Lemke of North Dakota as he presses his presidential bid. His supporters include at least four devoted backers led by his wife Isabelle, shown seated with the campaign entourage.
Polly Moran's screams summon officers to Beverly Hills home. Her husband Martin Malone attempted to shoot her but a jammed cartridge prevented tragedy. Malone was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon as deputies described his intoxication.
AUSTIN July 15 The State Board of Education held a secret session to fix per capita aid for public schools next year. Indications pointed to an $18.50 or $19 allotment, up from this year's 1,560,000 scholastics at $18.50, which would be the highest in state history. John Gregory McAllen president of the State Teacher's Association urged the board to show liberality.
City Tax Collector E F Howard says notices to all city taxpayers are in the mails announcing 1935 taxes due with a 5 percent discount if paid by September 1. Delinquency and penalties begin August 31. Many residents pay early to avoid last minute rush and gain the discount.
A crew of 60 Oklahoma City firemen and oil field workers fought to stop a ruptured Marion No. 1 well near the governor’s mansion from releasing sand oil and gas. By 9 am firefighters held the line, banned smoking, and created a safety zone within the block as the risk to the executive mansion and surrounding homes stayed high.
Five persons were killed today amid new flare ups in political and labor disorders in Spain. The government arrested 155 people after confiscating a quantity of arms.
Colonel Henry Breckinridge, a former assistant secretary of War, declares support for Governor Alf Landon and Colonel Frank Knox. He asserts Landon’s election would bring economic recovery, greater security for workers, tax relief, and less political hostility, while criticizing the current administration. Breckinridge notes numerous states visited and cites Landon’s promise to end threats to press, radio, and judiciary independence.
In Austin the Supreme Court upholds the railroad commission’s power to regulate trucks on public highways. The ruling in New Way Lumber Co. of Houston v. commission states officers do not need search warrants to stop trucks and check compliance with the law.
Sever.teen Boy Scouts from Tuxedo near Stamford camped Tuesday night at San Felipe springs en route to Alpine. They tour Texas and plan visits to El Paso and Carlsbad Caverns. The troop arrived in Del Rio from San Antonio and left Wednesday morning.

London reports Col. Charles A. Lindbergh has invented a new airplane dubbed the flying caravan. The Sun Graphic notes a British firm is building the craft with convertible seats that become bunks and unusually large fuel tanks. Delivery to Lindbergh is expected within two weeks, with F G Miles assisting on the design.
Smith, temporary chairman at the Townsend clubs national convention in Cleveland, described a constitutional amendment to legalize the Old Age Pension plan as essential this summer and to be sent to all state legislatures.
