Texas shows brighter indicators with higher hog and cattle prices, more employed workers, and new corporate charters though average wages fell slightly. June saw 174 corporations chartered with capital stock totaling 6.46 million dollars, while 59 firms failed. Cotton yields and forecasts suggest steady markets under fluctuating prices.
Denver report says A. J Chester Jr. son of the Fort Worth Texas and Pacific Railroad division superintendent was sinking 24 hours after shooting himself through the heart despite blood transfusions.
Captain H W MacDonald, cousin of British Premier Ramsay MacDonald, spoke in Del Rio after lectures in San Angelo and Sonora. He recounts a life of travel, near fatal childhood shipwrecks, and a philosophy of universal brotherhood, sharing stories of cultures, economies, and world affairs with vivid anecdotes. He has lectured at local churches and will address the Lions Club and a joint Presbyterian Christian service, inviting groups to book future talks.
In Washington on July 12 the Universal Service poll shows all but one senator and representative oppose canceling $11 billion in war debts owed to the U S by European nations. The lone exception is Senator Elmer Thomas who says he approves cancellation.
In Nacogdoches Texas on July 13 police wounded J C Smith of Beaumont while pursuing a car carrying two Kirbyville men Hugh Seale and Tom Porter. The vehicle contained 99 cartons of cigarets and was speeding through the business district as officers tried to identify ownership and the men’s parole status.
Liverio Nata was placed in Val Verde County jail after a U S Commissioner C D Smith hearing on Tuesday. He faces illegal entry charges awaiting trial at a special Federal Court session in July. Nata was arrested July 9 in Maverick County by Border Patrol agents.
Jacksonville resident T. J. Hand describes a voyage from New York to Jacksonville by sea river and lake using a 16 foot outboard boat and an 18 foot canoe. He plans to travel from Brownsville up the Rio Grande then through other rivers to the Pacific coast.
Senator Carter Glass of Virginia proposes a resolution to modify the Eighteenth Amendment. The measure would authorize government control to prevent saloons returning and regulate interstate traffic of intoxicants, or repeal the amendment and restore powers to the states. He notes he may not be bound by the party platform on this issue.
Charles H Evans Sr 38 prominent Sutton County resident and secretary of the Sonora Wool and Mohair Warehouse Company died in a San Angelo hospital after a brief throat infectiondeveloped blood poisoning. Funeral services were held in Sonora. He had lived there 25 years and was survived by his widow two daughters Jessie Louise and Mary Jane and son Charles H Jr.
Del Rio was chosen as the next quar terly meeting site for the Highway 90 Association. C P Spangler of Uvalde was named president, with J F Province Van Horn and A F Robinson Alpine as vice presidents, and Joe W Watson of Uvalde as secretary. Budgets for counties to be collected next year ranged from 25 to 200 dollars, with Val Verde 150 and several counties 100 or 50 dollars. Attendees from Del Rio were E F Measels J C Netts F L Childs and Geo E Love Sr.
Robbers gained entrance to the Bank of Faunsdale vault by chiseling a section from the 30 inch brick wall. Bank officials estimate the cash stolen at between 60 000 and 75 000 dollars.
Wichita Falls candidate for governor Tom Hunter will address Texas voters by radio from Fort Worth tonight about 8 30 p m. Message received by Mrs Geo W Cox urges voters to tune in and hear the speech.
Witnesses questioned by the coroner's jury into the fatal shooting of Smith Reynolds, 20 year old tobacco heir. Blanche Yurka, noted New York stage actress and friend of Mrs Libby Holman Reynolds, was among Mrs Reynolds' guests at the Reynolds home near Winston Salem, N C.
Grapeland Texas July 13. County Attorney Ben Greenwood said officers know the man who drove the car used by two Farmers and Merchants Bank robbers who escaped a posse Monday. An arrest is expected soon and could reveal Boyd Watson and Otis Yeager, the believed convicts. Three women and two men are being held in connection with the robbery.
ALBANY Texas July 13 R H Colonel Dick McCarty longtime owner of the Albany News has leased the plant to Charles A Pryor and traveled to El Paso for an eye operation at a government hospital. He has been in ill health for some time. McCarty bought the paper in 1902 sold it eight years later and repurchased it in 1916.
The NEA Service analysis suggests a broad upturn in wholesale prices may be underway led by hogs and cattle. A $2 per hundredweight rise adds about 200 million dollars in value to farmers holdings as livestock and crops show improvement, though experts warn the change could still falter.
Amelia Earhart Putnam, who began a non stop transcontinental flight in Los Angeles yesterday, landed in Newark at 11 26 a m Eastern Standard Times today. She set a new women's record by about 10 hours with a 19 hour 14 minute elapsed time, beating Ruth Nichols who previously held the record. She flew the same red monoplane used in her recent Atlantic crossing.
Congress man R E Thomason campaigned across Kerrville Junction Senora and other towns in his bid for a second term. Supporters predicted large margins in ranch counties the primary. He praised veterans at the Legion hospital and planned stops in Fredericksburg Mason and Menard before returning to San Angelo.
Houston July 13 John R. Padgett a student at John Reagan High School and a member of the football team fell to instant death today from the 26th floor of the Neils-Esperson building. His body crashed through a concrete roof of an adjoining garage demolishing the top of a car.
Congress ended a long stalemate on the 390 million Army appropriation as Senate accepted minor House changes and sent the measure to President Hoover for signature. The House backed retirement cuts of 2,000 regular officers and a relief loan framework remained, while unemployment relief debates continued.
Washington July 13 The Speaker of the House John W. Garner chooses the cheapest method to receive formal notice of his nomination for vice president by the Democratic party. It will cost three cents and the ceremony occurs within days. Senator Barkley will notify Garner by letter and Garner will reply publicly.
Representative Snell of New York as permanent chairman of the Republican national convention expects to formally notify President Hoover of his renomination between August 5 and 10. He said ceremonies would be on the White House grounds if in the daytime and indoors if at night.
Generally fair conditions prevail tonight and Thursday in Del Rio area. Yesterday’s high reached 93 degrees while the low settled around 75 with this morning’s low also 75.

North fair and sparingly cloudy conditions prevail tonight with patchy south cloudiness. North to south sections show fair to partly cloudy skies and a chance of thundershowers along the west coast by Thursday evening.
