J D Kelly boot shop on South Main Street was burglarized Tuesday night. The back door was jimmied and intruders left their tools. A pair of new boots was stolen. Kelly said thieves have revisited previously and carried off items in rapid succession.
Washington July 10 Critics in the Senate pressed for details on the administration AAA amendments. Chairman Smith of South Carolina argued the plan would not create a dictator over producers.
On July 10, the House and Senate moved to finance a probe into lobby influence on legislation. The House approved $50,000 and the Senate audit committee likewise endorsed a matching amount. A clash occurred between Rules Committee Chairman O'Connor and Mississippi Representative Rankin during the House debate.
Hidalgo County officials sought to determine if parents of Samuel Fortunas, held in Reynosa, Mexico, are American citizens as extradition was paused. Fortunas, born in the United States, could not be deported under Mexican law without proof of American parentage in the Dennett murder matter.
The Court of Civil Appeals ruled the Lone Star Gas Company rate of 32 cents per thousand feet charged to cities is reasonable and valid. The decision reversed Travis County District Court and favored the state after a jury had deemed the rate of 32 cents, eight cents above the current charge, unjust. The Railroad Commission had set a lower rate after a seven month hearing, a move challenged by the company. Federal Court then gave state courts jurisdiction to try the merits.
Washington July 10 Representative Kleberg opposes a Senate treaty to permit meat imports from Argentina. He argues it would undermine government efforts to aid American cattle raisers and could force producers to bear the burden of lost markets while raising concerns about animal diseases.
Attorney General Cummings told the House banking committee that unless a resolution barred suits against the government to recover losses from dollar devaluation, an international agreement to establish the gold standard would be almost impossible. He did not indicate any plan to restore the gold standard. The hearings opened on a resolution to bar gold clause suits.
John L Dodson Jr a 14 year old son of Attorney and Mrs John L Dodson suffered a broken nose Tuesday afternoon while at the Moore Park pool An accidental kick from another swimmer was blamed for the injury by John and the incident occurred during swimming activities.
Emil Zeller of Richmond reports a large fish hawk with a five foot wing span grabbed his bass lure in Chesapeake Bay off Cape Charles. He hauled the bird aboard after the hawk’s foot was snagged. The hawk will be mounted and Zeller claims prize may be due.
Thirteen year old Earl Crosby, who lost his right leg after a gun shot wound, is reported cheerful at Williams Sanitarium. Described as the gamest youngster, he reads about law and detectives, asks about an artificial leg, and hopes to return to school soon. He kept his spirits up, telling family he will be all right and dreaming of being a lawyer.
Glascow Montana July 10 two persons are known dead and an undetermined number injured in a tornado and cloudburst that swept the Fort Peck area. The Knob Hill community of Wheeler suffered the fatalities and Herpahs reported about 20 injuries. After hours of searching the ruins of mushroom towns, investigators said most dead and seriously injured were accounted for.
More than 40 Northwest high schools will offer vocational agriculture work this year. C Luker district director said the total depends on teacher availability. The list shrank when several teachers moved to soil erosion projects.
The Works Progress Administration District No 15 headquarters in Texas was relocated from San Antonio to Uvalde. San Antonio will keep District No 10 headquarters, covering Bexar County and 19 surrounding counties.
Addis Ababa reports the foreign ministry stating Ethiopia remains committed to a peaceful settlement with Italy and calls for the League of Nations council convening. The Italo Ethiopian conciliation commission failed at Scheveningen as Italian arbitrators refused to consider the question of Aualual.
Albany July 10 relief effort by state and federal governments progressed in flood wrecked upstate New York. Forty people died, property damage totaled 25 million dollars, four missing and about 3000 homeless. Governor Lenmann reported receding flood waters.
Dust storms that damaged crops and soil this spring may have a surprising benefit. Frank M. Pilson, fertilizer specialist, says the dust carried chemicals helped create abundant green pastures this summer.
Seven persons including four convicts died from heat prostration as temperatures reached a yearly record. Three Negroes and one white man died while working in fields at Ramsey and Eastham Prison farms. W A Paddock said three Negroes were stricken at Ramsey Farm and Bennie Daniels, a white man, died after heat exposure at Eastham Farm. The body of J R McLaughlin, a farmer near Sherman, was found in a field.
A verbal battle and a scuffle sent two San Felipe women before Judge Locha bay. The defendant claimed the mother of two threatened her while she bathed her children at a community water point. The judge, after pondering, dismissed the case and ordered the defendant to call the police if confronted with insolence.
Max Baer announced a separation from his wife on religious differences, according to the New York Daily News, after their June 29 Washington marriage. Mary Ellen Sullivan Baer in Long Beach New Jersey laughed off the rumors, calling them unfounded and noting she did not accompany him to New York.
Krakatoa, famed for its 1683 explosion that killed 36000, started a new series of eruptions today in Batavia Java. Eruptions occur every two minutes with lava reaching about 2500 feet in height.
In Hico on July 10 a young owner named J Ss Hampton from Clairette is noted for a nasal whistle act. Hampton, described as a nasal songbird, has practiced since age seven and has impressed or bewildered several school teachers with his unusual skill.
