London reports the British government will spend 10 million dollars over three years to improve the nation's physical fitness. The program aims to promote exercise and healthier living nationwide.
Cleveland detectives report the water find as the 10th torso case in the city. In Los Angeles, District Attorney Baron Fitts says Albert Dyer may be hanged for enslaving three Inglewood children, with two witnesses placing the kids with Dyer toward Baldwin Hills where remains were found.

Imperial Airways Caledonia flew 1,990 miles westward from Foynes to Botwood in 15 hours 9 minutes. Authorities foresee regular Trans North Atlantic service possibly next year as four nations study passenger and mail routes. France and Germany announce additional survey flights across the Atlantic. Nordmeer and Norwind involved.
Tax Assessor-Collector Lyle S Almond reports about 93 percent of the 1936 tax roll has been collected. State tax total is 6 648 505 with monthly receipts through June totaling 61 669 76. County taxes amount to 43 47322 with June receipts of 6 81907 pushing total county collections to 40 03881.

Del Rio celebrated the Fourth of July with no fires, no ambulance calls, and no serious accidents. Fire Chief Frank J. Schmidt credited a safe and sane holiday and noted no one was jailed for excessive celebration.
Virginia officials praised the salt road experiment as very successful except for sheep that licked salt binder holes in the road surface. A flock found a section where salt was applied and gnawed large holes before being driven away.

Dean Bolton named vice president and remaining dean, while Dr Marsteller remains dean of veterinary medicine. Bolton’s shift ends his engineering deanship, and Gilchrist would take the university highway role.
Virgil Ryan of Fort Stockton paid a fine in Justice Court after being charged with operating a truck without a license and driving with no rear lights. His truck, stopped near the Pecos River highway bridge, was hit by a car driven by tourist WM Beard, causing substantial damage to Beard’s trailer but no injuries.
Rescue operations for Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan faced a brief surge then a setback when Tasca mistook a meteor for a signal from the missing plane. The search center shifted toward the Phoenix Islands while radio hints from Honolulu stations offered cautious optimism as teams monitored fuel, weather, and wireless replies.
